Installing the Dakota Digital SGI-5B Speedometer Calibration Unit

Disclaimer: Your application may vary. This installation is based solely on my experience with my car. The install is based on a 1992 Camaro RS, 305 TBI motor, and 700R4/4L60 Automatic Transmission.

This can be done with the car on jack stands, however if you have access to a lift, USE IT. I paid a local shop (Finks Wheel Shop)$75 to lift the car and do the install. A few performance shops that wanted to do the install priced me from $200 to $300. Some even claimed it would take up to 6 hours to install. After my shop was complete, I realized that we were done in less than 2 hours.

Here is my setup for the install:

Gear Ratio: 3.73

Transmission: 4L60 / 700R4

Rear Tire Size: 275/40 ZR17

Output Signal (SGI-5B):

Step 1:

Locate the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) near the rear of the transmission and unplug it. It is simply 2 wires going into a plug. Remove this plug.

Step 2:

Of these two wires one will be the signal that is needed for the the SGI-5B

Step ***

The SGI-5B is installed in the center console. There was a hole drilled in the inside of the console to run the wires through. The wires are wrapped with electrical tape to prevent any contact with components around them. There is also some additional wire so the unit can be pulled from the console to adjust.
