Ken enlisted into the Navy in April, 1943 and, after completing
Boot Camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, was sent to the navy's
Radio School at API, Auburn, AL.
Motor Torpedo Boats
In December, 1943 he was assigned to the Motor Torpedo Boat
Squadron Training Command at Melville, RI where he was trained for PT Boat
duty. He joined Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 35 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard
in February, 1944 and was assigned to the crew of PT518. The Squadron saw
action in the English Channel and was there during the invasion of France.
The Squadron was decommissioned in Scotland in the Spring
of 1945 and Ken returned to the States for leave and then was shipped out
to the Philippine Islands for further assignment.
LST454
In December, 1945, Ken was in a U.S. Navy Receiving Station
in the Philippine Islands. It was there that he was assigned to LST454.
He was one of a number of sailors that joined the crew of LST454 just prior
to the start of its last voyage to San Diego, CA and then on to Charleston,
SC, via the Panama Canal. Ken participated in its decommissioning. At that
time, he was a Radioman 2nd Class.
An Officer and a Gentleman
Ken was discharged from the Navy in April, 1946. After receiving
a BS Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, he was commissioned a Lieutenant (jg) and served in the Active Reserve as an Intelligence Officer (1635).
He retired from the USNR as a Lieutenant (LT) in 1968.
