What is Polyamory

To Quote from the alt.polyamory FAQ:
<<Polyamory means "loving more than one". This love may be sexual, emotional, spiritual, or any combination thereof, according to the desires and agreements of the individuals involved, but you needn't wear yourself out trying to figure out ways to fit fondness for apple pie, or filial piety, or a passion for the Saint Paul Saints baseball club into it. "Polyamorous" is also used as a descriptive term by people who are open to more than one relationship even if they are not currently involved in more than one. (Heck, some are involved in less than one.) Some people think the definition is a bit loose, but it's got to be fairly roomy to fit the wide range of poly arrangements out there.>>

Polyamory, to me, is a recognition that people can love more than one person as well as a lifestyle where one chooses to do so responsibly. You see, that last word is an important one to me- Responsibly. The next important word is honestly. When you ignore those two words, IMO, you are no longer being polyamorous, you are either (in the first case) simply being promiscuous or (in the second case) you are cheating.

In addition, from my perspective the heart of polyamory is the building of extended family. The term polyamory was coined by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart (who was Tim Zell back then). Perhaps the best known depictions of the type of polyamory that I aspire to is found in the science fiction novels of Robert A. Heinlein.

Finally, polyamory is primarily about building *relationships*, which is what makes it different from "swinging" which is primarily about recreational sex. Stef Jones has written a good article called "How Is Polyamory Different From Swinging?" which goes into more depth on that point.

You might also want to read my article Polylove and Women which addresses many of the misconceptions that I've run into about polyamory and women. As I write more articles of my own I'll provide links to them. In the meantime, please enjoy the links and resources below. Or check out "The Bookstore" which includes a polyamory resource list which will allow you to purchase many of the resources directly from this website through Amazon.com.

San Diego Groups

San Diego has a local polyamory group that began as a meet-up group, yahooogroup and LJ community.  The person who organized all three of those communication channels moved out of state & meetups.com started charging for groups, so those venues broke up and are now organized separately.

You can join the yahoogroup here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sandiegocaliforniapolyamory/

You can join the Live Journal Community here: http://community.livejournal.com/sandiegopoly/profile

San Diego now has two separate polyamory meet up groups:
