THOMAS HICKEY


The following information from the Kansas State Archives was submitted by a interested researcher:


Thomas Hickey mustered in as a Private in Company B, 2nd Reg't. Kansas Infantry at age 40+ on the Muster-in Roll dated June 23, 1861 at Kansas City. He joined as a "3 Mos. Man" for duty on June 20, 1861, at Kansas City for a period of three years. He then appears as age 43 on the Muster-out Roll dated October 31, 1861, mustering out after the three months at Ft. Leavenworth. He was advanced $10.14 for clothing and received $10.00 from Major Conantz of Wyandotte and $10.00 from Capt Parr.

Thomas Hickey appears in Co. I, 2nd Reg't. Kansas Cavalry with the following physical description. Age 43 years; height 5 feet 9 1/2 inches, complexion Fair, Eyes Blue, Hair Brown, Born at Tipperary, Ireland, Occupation Farmer. He enlisted November 25, 1861, at Ft. Leavenworth before Lt. Robinsset for a three years.

We find him marked "Present in Co. A: from November 25, 1861, through February, 1862. In March, 1862 when he was transferred to Company I, 2nd Kansas Volunteers. He is marked present, March, April. His troop changes again to Co. C in May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December 1862, and January, February, March, April, May, June, July, and August, 1863.

He remains with Co. C on the pay sheets for September, October, November and December, 1863, and January and February, 1864. Remarks: Furnished his own horse and h. equipment from October 12. to October 31, 1863. The April and May paysheet is missing -- says name not on roll. On May and June, 1864, it says Absent with remarks: Detached service escort duty. Furnished horse and equipment.

Listed with Company -- of 2nd Cav. Kansas Thomas Hickey is listed as a Private, aged 35, on Muster-out Roll dated Leavenworth, Kansas, Jan. 10, 1865. Marked "Last paid to Feb. 28, 1862. Remarks: Transferred to Co. C, 2nd Kansas Cavalry by order of L. U. Bassett, Lt. Col, March 10, 1862. [This seems out of order or may be due to his capture].

Finally on a sheet of Thomas Hickey, Private Co. C. saying Company Muster-out roll dated Leavenworth, Kansas, Jan. 10, 1865 says he was last paid to Dec. 31, 1863. There is the notation: Due $100 Bounty and the Remarks: Prisoner of War Captured by the enemy near Fort Gibson, C. N. September 16, 1862.

The next sheet says Thomas Hickey, Private, Co. C, 2nd Reg't Kansas Cav. aged 40 years appears on a Detachment Muster-out Roll dated at Leavenworth, Kansas, August 21, 1865; Muster-out to date August 11, 1865, Last Paid to December 31, 1863 when he was paid $13.88. Again the notation of Due $100 for Bounty. Remarks are: Has pay due for furnishing horse and horse equipment to June 20, 1864. Prisoner of War captured by the enemy near Ft. Gibson C. N. [Cherokee Nation] Sept. 16, 1864. Mustered out of service of the U. S. under telegram from the War Department A. G. dated June 30, 1865. Entitled to three (3) months extra pay under provisions of telegram from War Department dated May 30, 1865.

The final sheet says Thomas Hickey, Private Co. c, 2 Reg't. Kansas Cavalry (Detached Original Companys I and C) Appears on Returns as follows:

July, 1862: Absent on detached service escorting paymaster to Ft. Lyon since July 14, 1862.

September, 1863: Absent detached service escort since September 9, 1863.

June, 1864: Absent on Detached service escort duty at Ft. Scott, Kansas since June 1, 1864.

Sept to December, 1864: Absent--prisoner of war captured by the enemy Sept. 16, 1864.

January, 1865: (Detached original Cos. C & I) Absent Prisoner of War captured near Ft. Gibson, September 1 of 64.

February, 1865: Exchanged or escaped Prisoner of War (over) but other side not printed. [Parole/exchange lists in Archives say Thomas was exchanged in the final parole of prisoners from Camp Ford on May 22, 1865.]

July, 1864: Absent on detached service escort duty to Kansas since June 1, 1864.
