Joseph was born about 1792, in Hewoth, County Durham, the son of George Tinn and Barbara Pearson. He became a mining engineer and married Isabella Atkinson on 18 June 1831, at Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland.

Isabella was born about 1805, in Willington, Northumberland, the daughter of William Atkinson and Eleanor Scott. She died in Clifton, Bristol,a widow, age 72.
