History of
the Churchland Youth Football
The
Churchland Football Association has been offering the youth of
Portsmouth a program Football Athletics for many decades. Back
then, we had a program consisting of five Divisions of teams that
competed amongst each other throughout the season. The coaches
and staff worked to instill in our children not only a sense of
competition, but a sense of fair play. As the program became more
popular, the Associates began looking for a more structured
program of athletics to enhance what they had already built.
In 1983,
CFA approached the Pop Warner Youth Football & Spirit Organization
in an hopes of achieving this goal.
The new
program laid out a more structured approach to aligning the teams
by age and weight classification. This alleviated the problems
that came about with just age classification.
With the
new Pop Warner rules in effect, scholastic aptitude became a
driving force for the league teaching our success on the field
could only be achieved through success in the classroom. Each
child would need to achieve the grades in school to be eligible to
participate.
The
effect has been wonderful. Our kids have taken the lessons they
have learned with us and used them to succeed in life.
Many of
our alumni have returned to our ranks as coaches and staff to help
support our kids and the community by offering their time and
experience to help teach our leaders of tomorrow.
