SAFETY FIRST:

Kids compete with kids of similar age and size. Pop Warner is the ONLY youth football program (local, regional and national) that sets and enforces a strict AGE & WEIGHT MATRIX that reduces the risk and reality of injuries. (See Main Menu Link for Age & Weight Chart)

Did you know that Pop Warner Football is safer than soccer?  Pop Warner football has 12% fewer injuries per capita among 5-15 year olds than organized soccer in the same age range!  (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission).

Concerns

Pop Warner is a safety first program with strict control of ages, weights and equipment that allows the youth of our area to practice sportsmanship and physical fitness under adult supervision. All Football and Cheerleading coaches are certified by the National Youth Sports Coaching Association (NYSCA). In addition, at least one member of each coaching staff is First Aid or CPR certified. Every player must have a Doctor's approval to play. Before any player participates in physical contact drills against another player, he will have had two weeks of intensive physical conditioning. At each practice and before each game, he will go through a thorough routine of stretching and warming up exercises. Before he ever takes the field in a game or practice, he will have had at least 20 hours of vigorous training and conditioning. When he plays, his games will be officiated by registered collegiate or high school football officials.

PREGAME WEIGH-IN PROCEDURE

Age/Weight Chart

When: Players should be at the field at least 45 minutes before the first game and at half-time of the later games.  Check with your coaches to make sure of time to be at the field of play.

Where: On a flat paved or concrete surface away from spectators.

Who handles the weigh-ins: One coach from each team will handle the weigh-ins.

Who is present at the scale: Only the two coaches. No one else.

How to conduct the weigh-ins: (1) The scale is set to the maximum weight for regular weight players according to the in pads weight allowance chart; (2) The players are weighed fully dressed in equipment except for their helmets; (3) The coach should line his players up in the order of the I.D. cards presented, with older but lighter players in the back of the line; (4) Players should step on the scale lightly and say their name clearly; (5) The coach of the opposing team will check the I.D. cards of the players as they step on the scale and will confirm whether the player makes weight; (6) After the regular weight players are weighed, the scale should be set for the older but lighter players and the same process followed; (7) A player who is overweight can re-weigh once without pads at the stripped weight according to the weight chart (however, it is unlikely that a player will make weight in the stripped mode if he does not make weight with the allowances provided for pads); and (8) The same process should then be followed for the other team.

Latecomers: The coaches should be available to weigh latecomers; however, no player should be weighed after the start of the game, and anyone not weighed cannot play.

If a player doesn't make weight: Players who do not make weight are ineligible for that game only and must take their shoulder pads off.  They may sit with their team.

Behavior at scales: Coaches are to be friendly to opposing players. They must not ask the players their ages or ask for proof of eligibility other than the I.D. card. The weigh-in is a safety procedure and is not to be turned into an interrogation.

If the I.D. cards are unavailable for players: If an I.D. card is unavailable for one, some or all of the players, the coach should record the names of the players, their numbers, whether they made weight and the explanation given for the missing I.D. card(s). This information should be turned into the Executive Director when the Must Play form is turned in.

Penalty for playing an ineligible player: Teams playing with ineligible players forfeit all games in which the player was a member of the team.

Controversies: There should be no controversies. A player either makes weight or he doesn't.

No deals: There shall be no deals at the scales permitting overweight players to participate. The penalty is suspension for the adult and the teams will be treated as having played with ineligible players.
