CoMPleTE FAQ

(Note: The following is an official Comic Images FAQ for use in tournaments and other sanctioned games. While the formatting has been altered, the content has not.)

GENERAL FAQ v5 5/20/02

The WWF Raw Deal FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) has been broken up into multiple FAQs. This general FAQ answers questions on general rulings, provides information on general rules like timing issues, chain of effects and the golden rule. It also gives you errata, banned notices, promo card information, general multiplayer questions, etc.

This FAQ will not tell you what a card does - read the appropriate card/spoiler list. Exception: promo card information will be found here.

The remaining FAQs are broken up by set. If you have a question on a card from a specific set, look in that FAQ for answers. NOTE: if you are looking for answers to the interaction of more than one card or to a specific Superstar, always look in the FAQ of the set in which the most recent card came in. EXAMPLE: Want to know how Clean Break interacts with Half Hour Suplex? Look in the Backlash FAQ cause that's where Half Hour Suplex premiered.

Any changes to a FAQ will be noted in a different color. Also, check the dates to compare FAQs - new FAQs supercede older FAQs. I have reddened some changes from the last FAQ since this new FAQ came quickly on the toes of the other.

Always refer to the rulebook first to learn how to play and to get answers to very common questions. You can also download the rules from our website. Then read this FAQ. If you still have questions, then send them to the Commissioner at commissioner@comicimages.com. We got a lot of email asking questions that are found in the rulebook and FAQ. Please take the time to read these sources of information - their purpose is to give you the answers you need in most cases.

Also, we are not going to list every case scenario in an answer. You can assume that if two or more cards have the same wording, they work the same way.

Thanks for your support!

The Raw Deal Commissioner

CARD PROBLEMS:

Q: When opening up my packs, I found a blank card. What do I do with it?
A: This is a misprint. Send it back to us for a replacement card. Usually you will get a rare card. If the blank card has foils around the edges then you will get an Ultra Rare card (unless of course the card came from a starter deck). Send the card with a note where you got it from (booster/starter and what set) to:

Comic Images
280 Midland Ave.
Building L
Saddle Brook, NJ 07663

This applies to cards with other defects such as miscuts, scratches, etc.

RULING REVERSALS:

These are reversals to rulings given out on the net to individual questions or from previous FAQs. You might see this answers in their respective FAQs, but they are collected here for convenience.

  1. Superstar abilities do not break chains. For example, Undertaker can hit with a Samoan Drop then use his ability to search for a High Risk maneuver that needs to be played after a 4D or greater maneuver.

  2. From The Top Rope will allow you to play any High Risk maneuver that has a requirement followed by a "Can only be played after...". This means you can Springboard Dropkick after a From The Top Rope. FYI, the new card from Backlash, No, Jeff, Don't Do It, acts in the same way as a From The Top Rope. However, cards like Superplex and Big Splash In The Corner cannot be played after Top Rope, because they say they MUST be played after a certain card rather than saying they CAN be played after a certain card.

  3. You may now use Shoulder Block and other such cards that say they can reverse any maneuver played after an Irish Whip to reverse ANY maneuver played after an Irish Whip. Ok, confused? In previous FAQs, we listed that only Strikes were legal to reverse with Shoulder Block, et al., but now a Shoulder Block, for example, can reverse a 3D played after an Irish Whip. Note, this does not mean you can reverse an irreversible move.

  4. Clean Break will now force a discard when reversing such cards a Clutch Onto Opponent and Half Hour Suplex. Just replace the words Jockeying For Position on the Clean Break card and use it like that: Clean Break will only work when played from the hand and it will require your opponent to discard 4 cards if he or she can. Plus you get to draw one card.

  5. Not really a ruling reversal, but a clarification. Some Superstars have been updated to change the use of the word "play" in their Superstar abilities. Some Superstars were restricted in what they could play: the wording now constitutes what they can have in the Arsenals and Backlash decks. See the FAQs for further indication and look under RTC, APA and Big Show for examples.

BANNED CARDS:

There are no banned cards at this time.

PLATINUM RULE:

If card text specifically breaks a rule, that card text takes precedence.

GOLDEN RULES:

  1. Cards that say they cannot (or may not) be reversed or have an effect making them irreversible (like a Diversion) cannot be reversed at all unless the card trying to reverse it specifically says it can reverse irreversible cards, like When You Thought You Had All The Answers. Other examples: Tree Of Woe cannot be reversed by a Where Are Your Medals. A Diversion + Kick cannot be reversed by Manager Interferes.
Other cards list cards that can specifically reverse it; only those cards can reverse it. Example: Clutch Onto Opponent can only be reversed by a Clean Break. No other card can reverse it.
Superstar abilities override all reversal restrictions EXCEPT for cards that say they cannot be reversed (or have an effect like Diversion or Turn The Tide making a card irreversible). Chyna cannot reverse a Leaping Knee To The Face using her ability, but she can reverse a Superplex by discarding a High Risk maneuver.

  2. Cards that are removed from the Ring no longer have an effect on the game unless specifically stating otherwise. So an Inferno Match that is removed from the Ring will no longer cause players to overturn a card whenever they place one in the Ring. Shane O'Mac, Enter The Stratus-Phere, Busted Wide Open, JR Style Slobberknocker, are but a few more examples.
Some cards can be voluntarily removed from the Ring to trigger an effect. Lita To The Xtreme is an example of such a card. However, if Lita is removed because of a Drop Toe Hold, the Lita card text does NOT get triggered.
    Don't over think this rule.

  3. Superstars whose personas have been updated/changed are treated as their original Superstar with regards to effects stated in the text of cards. This does not mean they can use the original Superstar’s foil specific cards: if the new persona’s logo is not on such a card he or she cannot use that card. For example: Undertaker’s new persona in Survivor Series is Deadman, Inc. Deadman Inc. can draw a card for playing American Bad Ass, can play No Sell Maneuver, cannot play Over Sell maneuver, etc. However, Deadman cannot play Undertaker Sits Up, Undertaker’s Flying Clothesline, Rest In Peace, etc.
The only other updated Superstar to appear in Survivor Series is Cactus Jack, who is affected by Mankind cards (but he still cannot use Mankind foils unless his logo is on the card too).
Cactus Jack may use an older version of the card Get Hardcore.
In a tag team situation, no team may have two versions of a Superstar.
Finally, in a tournament situation, if at all possible, two versions of a Superstar should not face each others in the finals. Determine the highest ranked player of either version in order to determine advancement. (To find out more about tournament rules, see the Tournament Rules document elsewhere on this website).

  4. What constitutes playing a card? This has become a very important question as more expansions are released. The definition of playing a card is a card that is played either from the hand or Backlash deck. Overturning a card or "using" from one from the Ring does not constitute playing a card and thus does not trigger effects that affect the playing of a card. If a player plays Censorship Match and calls for Step Aside not to be played, you can still overturn a Step Aside, but you could not play it from the hand. You can use a Pre-match card as a Mid-match card and still trigger the Pump Kick's effect, since that use does not constitute playing a card. All Talk, No Action will not reverse a Pre-match used as a Mid-match since that is not playing a card. Using a card from the Ring can still break chains where appropriate and those rulings can be found in the FAQs.

TIMING SEQUENCE:

In the beginning, a timing sequence was not needed, but as more cards are added to the pool, and therefore more "rules" broken, a timing sequence will help answer some questions.

Here is the timing sequence for playing a card from your hand:

  1. Apply any Fortitude modifiers being generated (Stone Cold Stunner after a Kick, Tazz's ability, an opponent's Open Up A Can Of Whoop A$%)

  2. Meet the requirements for the playing the card (having the right fortitude, having played an appropriate maneuver of a certain damage to play a High Risk, etc.)

  3. Apply any damage modifier you are generating (Benoit's SSA, Irish Whip bonus)

  4. Apply any damage modifier an opponent is generating (if playing with multiple opponents in the Ring, apply modifiers starting from the player to your left) (Brahma Bull, Defensive Cover)

  5. Opponent may try to reverse the card from the hand or the Ring.

  6. If not reversed, card is successful and goes into the Ring.

  7. Apply any effects for playing a successful card (Time Keeper's Bell)

  8. Apply any effects listed on the card

  9. Apply any damage; opponent overturns cards and may reverse while overturning

If a player has two or more effects that can be generated simultaneously, that player may decide what order those effects will take place: For example: Player A has Brahma Bull and Defensive Cover in play. Player B plays Samoan Drop. Player A may choose to have Brahma Bull kick in first causing the Drop to do 1D, then use Defensive Cover to further reduce it to 0D.

CHAIN OF EFFECTS

Any card that requires something to be played beforehand, must have been played immediately beforehand. You cannot play other cards in between then play the card. For example: An Irish Whip needs to be played before a 3D. You cannot play the Whip, then a Kick, Roll Out Of The Ring, then play the 3D.

Most High Risk moves need a certain amount of damage to be inflicted in order to play the HR card. For example, Matt's Moonsault needs a 4D maneuver to have been played immediately beforehand. You can't have played other things in between the 4D or greater maneuver and expect to get the Moonsault off.

The exception to this rule is those cards that state they cancel the "Can only be play…" requirement. (From The Top Rope, etc.)

Superstar abilities are another exception to this rule: you may use Superstar abilities in between a 4D maneuver and a High Risk card, for example.

Another exception is cards that carry over to the next turn: Irish Whip for example. If you reverse an opponent's Whip with your own Whip, you can play a card that requires the playing of an Irish Whip right beforehand (as long as that is the first card you play on your turn). This also applies to Jockeying For Position and Throw Opponent Into The Corner Turnbuckle.

ERRATA - CARD CORRECTIONS/CHANGES

Ego Boost: should read "
Your next card played this turn is -5F."

Not Yet: should read "
You must take a card in your hand, shuffle it into your Arsenal, then draw 2 cards."

Undertaker's Tombstone Piledriver: should read "
As an action, you may discard this card to draw 1 card. Doing this will not cause any damage to opponent and the Fortitude Value for this action is considered 0F."

Superkick: delete the words "
When successfully played".

Diversion: should read "
If your next card played this turn is a maneuver it cannot be reversed."

Drop Toe Hold: It's a Grapple.

Let's Make Some Noise: delete the word "must" so now it reads: "
When this card is in your Ring area, whenever you discard a card from your hand; you must discard, but you may then draw 1 card for each card discarded."

Over Sell Maneuver: should read "
Cannot be played by Stone Cold Steve Austin, Undertaker, Kane, or Tazz. If played from your hand, play after an opponent's successful maneuver; opponent's maneuver stays in his Ring area; but ignore any of the maneuver's other effects, overturn the appropriate amount of damage ignoring any reversals. You may then draw up to 2 cards, and end opponent's turn."

Beer, Cards, And More Beer: "The maneuver has to be successful in order to trigger the looking at opponent’s hand or drawing up to 2 cards."

GENERAL QUESTIONS:

Q: Do I have to show what cards I bring to and from my Arsenal and hand?
A: No. Your hand and Arsenal, in contrast to the Ringside pile, is not "open" to your opponent. So any effect that takes cards to and from your Arsenal and your hand is hidden from your opponent.
NOTE: Unless it says differently on the card and unless you are asked to retrieve a certain card. (And this is in contrast to the Ringside pile which is open and anyone can see what you retrieve or put in.)

Q: Ok, what is the difference between "must" and nothing else on a card when it tells you to do something?
A: When a card says you "must" do something, then you have to do it otherwise the card cannot be played or the effect does not go off. Anything other than "must" means that you do what you can to meet the cost. For example, Spit At Opponent simply says, "You discard 1 card. Your opponent discards 4 cards. Since it does not use "must" then you only discard a card if you have one. Your opponent will discard how many he or she can up to 4 cards. To make things even clearer, if Spit is the only card in your hand, you can still play the card. However, if you want to play a Kick, which says you "must" overturn a card, and you have no cards in your Arsenal, then you cannot play the card. Another card that does not use "must" and works if it is the only card in your hand is Comeback.

Q: What does it mean when a card says it adds +8F to a reversal?
A: It means that whatever the Fortitude Value of the reversal you want to play, add 8F to it. So if I want to play an Escape Move, which costs 0F, it now costs 8F and if I have a Fortitude Rating of 7F or less, I won't be able to play the Escape Move. By the way, we call this adding of Fortitude "Fortitude plunging".

Q: If I play a card with a Stun Value that does, say, 5D, do I get to draw a card if my opponent's 5th card overturned is a reversal?
A: No, because Stun Value only allows you to draw if your opponent did not take the full damage required. In this case the opponent did take the 5D required so the Stun Value effect does not kick in. Also, for your rule lawyer-types, you don't get stun value for a maneuver reversed from the hand. Yes your opponent did not take the full damage value, but then again, you didn't hit him, so how can you stun your opponent?

Q: Let's cut to the chase. How do you win this game?
A: Any time your opponent must overturn a card from the Arsenal and cannot, a Pin occurs immediately. Note the word "immediately". Count Outs happen at the end of turn in which you have no cards in the Arsenal, but as soon as you have to overturn a card and cannot, you lose by Pin.

Q: Can a game end in a draw?
A: Yes. It is possible for both players to end a turn with no cards in either of their Arsenals and a Pin did not occur. In this case, it is a draw and neither player is considered a winner.

MUTLIPLAYER RULES:

Q: If I hit a guy with a 4D or greater maneuver, can I play a High Risk maneuver on another player?
A: No.

Q: If I Maintain Hold on Player A, can Player C hit us? Can we reverse it? Does the Hold break?
A: Player C will have a free shot on any of you, though you can overturn a reversal to the hit. Chyna could use her ability. The Hold is maintained. It has to be broken by the player being held in the normal way.

PROMO CARD WORDINGS AND INFORMATION:

Many promo cards are not listed on the spoiler lists. They are usually gotten through Inquest or Scrye Magazines, but you can also get some in store demos and conventions where sanctioned Raw Deal events take place.

Non-foil versions of ultra-rares are considered foils for game purposes.

Promos with different backs may be used in tournaments as long as they and the other cards in the Arsenal are in the same opaque sleeves.

RAW DEAL FAQ v2 5/20/02

This is the Raw Deal FAQ. If you do not have a question relating only to a Raw Deal card or Superstar then you are in the wrong FAQ. You should also read the General FAQ first for basic and general information.

SUPERSTARS:

  Rock

Rock's ability happens before the Draw Segment.

Rock can choose any card from his Ringside to return to the bottom of the deck.

Rock can be Counted Out like any other Superstar. His ability works at the start of the turn, therefore he does not have time to use his ability to save himself from a Count Out.

  Mankind

Mankind's ability are mandatory and cannot be "switched" off.

Mankind draws 2 cards during his Draw Segment.

Non-damage effects like Kane's Superstar ability and Inferno Match, etc., are NOT reduced (however the initial damage Inferno Match does when played will be reduced to 0).

If Mankind is hit with a Punch and he reverses it with a Knee To The Gut, the opponent will take 2D.

Mankind can use Elbow To The Face to reverse moves like Bulldog or anything else that will do 8D, since he will only take 7D.

 Chris Jericho

When Jericho uses his ability, he chooses which card to discard; the opponent also chooses which card to discard.

MULTIPLAYER: Jericho's ability only affects one opponent.

  Kane
Kane's effect happens before his Draw Segment.

MULTIPLAYER: Kane affects all opponents.

  Undertaker

Undertaker must discard two cards in order to activate his ability.

Undertaker chooses any card from the Ringside to return.

Undertaker may play a maneuver, return a card, and use a High Risk maneuver, after meeting the High Risk requirement (i.e. Superstar abilities do not break the chain of effects).

 "Stone Cold" Steve Austin

His ability can be used anytime during his turn, but not before the Draw Segment.

ACTIONS:

Q: The wording on Spit At Opponent on the Survivor Series version is different than the original version. Which takes precedence?
A: The Survivor Series one. Accordingly, you MUST be able to discard a card after playing Spit in order to legally play the card. In other words, if Spit is the only card in your hand, you cannot play it.

Q: How does Ego Boost interact with Bulldog?
A: You cannot discard Ego Boost to get 2 cards when a Bulldog is played. The player who played the Bulldog can choose which card you must discard. If he chooses an Ego Boost, it triggers and then you get your 2 cards. If the player does not choose the Ego Boost, you can do nothing about it.

Q: If I have to discard more than one card, can I use Ego Boost as one of those cards to draw 2? And if so, do any of those have to be discarded?
A: You can use Ego Boost as one of the cards to discard if more than one has to be discarded and the 2 new cards won't be affected by the discarding effect. For example: if you have 5 cards in your hand, with an Ego Boost among them, and Mankind hits you with Have A Nice Day which forces you to discard your hand, then you discard all 5 cards. Ego Boost would then trigger, allowing you to draw 2 cards. You keep these cards because you already discarded your whole hand, meeting the effect of Have A Nice Day.

Q: If Shane O'Mac is in my Ring area and somehow my Fortitude drops below 15 (Drop Toe Hold, Shake It Off, etc.), can I still use the card?
A: Sure. Once it is in the Ring, it stays there and is active until someone gets rid of it.

Q: Can I end my opponent's turn with an Irish Whip then, as the first card on my turn, play 3D or some other card needing an Irish Whip played beforehand?
A: Yes, because the Whip's effect carries over in to the next turn (as it states on the card). Same for Jockeying For Position and others of this ilk. This does not mean you can end your opponent's turn with a reversal that does enough damage and think to play a High Risk maneuver as the first card on your turn.

Q: I played Diversion + a submission maneuver + Maintain Hold. Do I automatically win?
A: Diversion says that your next maneuver cannot be reversed, so if your next maneuver, a submission in this case, can't be reversed, you'll be able to slap down a Maintain Hold. After that, it is the Maintain Hold doing the damage, so the Diversion does not apply any more: it only affect the card played right after it.

Q: If I got a Maintain Hold out on someone, can we still use our Superstar abilities?
A: Yes. For example, Chyna could still reverse the maintained hold with a submission maneuver from her hand. Undertaker could discard two cards and search for an appropriate reversal, etc.

Q: If a Maintain Hold can be played after Mankind's Mandible Claw and Jericho's Walls Of Jericho as if they were Submission maneuvers, can I reverse either of these moves with a Break The Hold or anything else that reverses Submissions?
A: No. These cards are still Trademark Finishers, not Submissions. You would need a reversal that can stop Trademark Finishers.

Q: Do I have to tell my opponent what I get back using a Recovery? How about when I use the Rock's ability? Or the Undertaker's ability?
A: Your Ringside pile is open for inspection by your opponent. It doesn't mean that your opponent can just grab the pile to look through it, but you must show your opponent the cards in your Ringside piles if the opponent wishes (but we caution players who try to stall a match by looking through the Ringside pile very often). So, because your Ringside pile is "open", your opponent may see what you put into the pile and what you take out of it.

Q: I know successful actions stay in the Ring, but why do cards like Chop, Arm Bar Takedown, and Collar & Elbow Lockup, when played as actions, get discarded?
A: That is their effect and if you want to keep recycling those Chops and such, be our guest. Seriously, some cards break the rules, as mentioned before, but more importantly in this case, these cards can do very little harm if you plan on recycling them often - there should be better cards to recycle as you get deeper in the game.

Q: Do the above cards add to your Fortitude Rating when discarded?
A: No. Only cards in your Ring add to your Fortitude Rating.

Q: If I play Chop as an action, can it be stopped by a Step Aside since Chop is also a Strike?
A: No, because you chose to play Chop as an action. It can only be reversed by a reversal keyed to stopping actions, like No Chance In Hell.

REVERSALS AND REVERSING:

Q: What does it mean when a card says it all reversals to it +2D? Like Discus Punch.
A: This means if someone reverses your Discus Punch, you will take +2D. So a Step Aside will do 2D to you, but Chyna Interferes will do 5D.

Q: Will I take damage if someone overturns a reversal while taking damage from a Discus Punch?
A: Overturned reversals never do damage.

Q: Can Manager Interferes reverse irreversible maneuvers?
A: No, but it can reverse any type of maneuver, like Strikes, Grapples, Finishers, etc. But remember the Golden Rule of irreversible cards: you can't reverse irreversible maneuvers unless a card specifically says so. Also, note, that Manager Interferes cannot reverse cards that can only be reversed by specific cards like Superplex only being able to be reversed by another Superplex or Shove Off The Top Rope.

Q: Can I reverse a grapple maneuver played after an Irish Whip using Shoulder Block or Lou Thesz Press and any other card that say it can reverse a maneuver played after an Irish Whip?
A: Yes, you can reverse a grapple or any other maneuver played after an Irish Whip, even a 3D (as long as the card does not say it cannot be reversed). This ruling has been changed from previous FAQs.

Q: When an opponent plays a successful maneuver against me and I happen to overturn an applicable reversal card from my Arsenal does that reversal come into play or does it's card text effects happen?
A: Make sure you read the text of the reversal card. All reversals will be written in one of three ways: 1) no restriction on when to play; 2) with the "If played from your hand" restriction and; 3) both, with no restriction as the first part of the card and the "If played from your hand" restriction in the second part. For example: let's look at the text of Double Digits:
Reverses any Strike, Grapple or Submission maneuver. End opponent's turn. If played from your hand, opponent must discard 2 cards, then take the top 2 cards from his Arsenal and put them into his Ringside pile.
So, if an opponent gets you in a Bear Hug (submission) and you cannot reverse it from your hand, but while taking damage overturn Double Digits, all you do is stop taking any further damage and end your opponent's turn. Opponent does not discard 2 cards nor does he do anything else. Why? Because Double Digits was not played from your hand.

Q: Does this mean that Lou Thesz Press and Facebuster do nothing when overturned?
A: Correct. Both reversals have the "If played from your hand" restriction, which means they do nothing when overturned.

MANEUVERS:

Q: Can I play Kick, Stagger, Superkick to make the Superkick do 10D of non-reversible damage?
A: Yes and No. Superkick will become non-reversible but will only do 5D.

Q: But the Superkick was played after a 5D Maneuver. Why doesn't it do 10D?
A: Not really: it was played after the Stagger. The intent of any card that says it must be played after a certain card or a card can only be played if another was played before, means that the card in question must have been played immediately after or immediately before. Using the above example, Superkick does an extra 5D if played after a maneuver that did 5D or greater. You cannot play other cards in between and then get the bonus (you can play other cards or use abilities in between if you don't mind losing any bonuses). Cards like Cross Body Block and Back Body Drop require that Irish Whip be played before. This does not mean you can play Irish Whip at the beginning of your turn, play some actions or other maneuvers next, then expect to play the Cross Body Block or Back Body Drop and get the Irish Whip bonus. This is different if an effect states that it gives a bonus to the next maneuver played this turn: you may play other types of cards or use abilities prior to playing the maneuver and still get the bonus. For example, you may play 3 Get Crowd Supports in a row if you wish to give your next maneuver +12D (and your opponent +36F)!

Q: So if I play a successful Kick and have to overturn the top card, which happens to be my last card, in the Arsenal, I still have till the end of my turn before being counted out?
A: Yes.

FULLY LOADED FAQ v2 4/3/02

This is the Fully Loaded FAQ. If you do not have a question relating only to a Fully Loaded card or Superstar then you are in the wrong FAQ. You should also read the General FAQ first for basic and general information.

SUPERSTARS:

  Chyna

Chyna can reverse any maneuver by discarding a maneuver of the same type (noting exceptions below).
Chyna ignores Fortitude requirements when using her ability.
Chyna cannot reverse a maneuver that is irreversible.
Chyna's ability is considered reversing from the hand, so any effects restricted or triggered by reversing from the hand will come into effect when she uses her ability. For example, she cannot reverse Claw or Dirty Low Blow, but she will trigger Running Lariat's effect and she will be able to use Set Him Up.
If she reverses a DISCUS PUNCH, the person playing the DP will take +2D.

TAG TEAM: Chyna can tag out when she reverses using her Superstar Ability, as she is reversing a maneuver from her hand.

 Kurt Angle

Angle is not affected in any way by a Critical Injury.

MULTIPLAYER: Angle's Intelligence Action special allows him to look at any opponent's hand at any time. The cards are not played face up on the table.

  Eddie Guerrero

It does not matter when Eddie plays the High Risk in his turn - as long as it is the first High Risk maneuver, it cannot be reversed.

  B.A. Billy Gunn

His ability is optional and can only be done on his turn.

Gunn can use his ability before the Draw Segment.

  Chris Benoit

Every maneuver you play in a turn will immediately do extra damage. The first maneuver played will do +1D, the second will do +2D, etc. It resets at the end of a turn.

Benoit's ability does not work for Reversals that do damage or maneuver/reversal hybrid cards used as Reversals. For example, playing a Crippler Crossface as a reversal will not do extra damage.

  Tazz

Tazz can only retrieve cards with the word "suplex" in the title. This does NOT include cards like Tazzplex or Superplex.

Tazz's -4F ability when playing suplexes happens automatically.

  Rikishi

Rikishi's ability does not break the chain of effects.

  X-Pac

X-Pac always draws 3 cards during his Draw Segment, but must discard one of them. If he cannot draw 3 cards, he draws what he can (i.e. he cannot be pinned this way, though he could be Counted Out at the end of the turn).

If he cannot draw 3 cards, he still must discard one.

  Road Dogg

Road Dogg may use his ability on his first turn, if he and his opponent are at 0F.

Road Dogg cannot use his ability before the Draw Segment.

ACTIONS:

Q: How does Kick Out work?
A: You have to take all the damage from a card and not overturn a reversal in order to use the Kick Out. You can then discard the Kick Out in order to end your opponent's turn. This is not considered a reversal. Note, this will stop an opponent from playing another card, like a High Risk or something.

Q: Can Comission-er Rules get rid of hybrid reversals?
A: Yes. Same for cards like Just Bring It!, which can get rid of Action hybrids.

Q: Can Table! Table! Table!  be cumulative?
A: Yes. As well as cards like Ladder In The Ring and Get Crowd Support.

Q: Does J.R. Style Slobberknocker stop me from using Mid-match Actions and/or cards that say "as a Mid-match action…"?
A: J.R. will stop Mid-match actions but cannot stop the use of Pre-match cards used as Mid-match actions because J.R. specifically says it affects Action CARDS, not cards that simulate Actions.

Q: If Benoit discards a card to Rabid Wolverine to keep his turn going then plays his third maneuver for that turn, will it get a +3D bonus?
A: Yes.

Q: How does Rabid Wolverine interact with Series Of Suplexes?
A: Using a Rabid Wolverine will continue your turn but you cannot discard a card to keep the Series Of Suplexes going. The chain of effect is broken.

Q: Can I use a Rabid Wolverine after a 4D or greater maneuver is reversed to keep my turn going then immediately play a High Risk move?
A: No, because you broke the chain of effects by discarding a card to Rabid Wolverine. This can also be applied to Edge's Million Dollar Smile.

Q: One more Rabid Wolverine question. If I had played Deluding Yourself, then played a maneuver that was reversed, when I discard a card to Rabid Wolverine, do I lose my entire hand?
A: No, since your turn is not over yet.

Q: Can I combine Bait Opponent with Ego Boost?
A: Yes, but make sure the Bait Opponent is played first. Ego Boost affects the next card played. Bait Opponent affects the next maneuver. So if you played Ego Boost first, you are only making the Bait Opponent -5F. This won't help you much. But if you played a Bait Opponent first then Ego Boost, if the next card played is a maneuver, then you can play it for -11F!

Q: If my opponent has a Title belt and I play Backed By Stephanie McMahon does he lose cards equal to the belt's bonus?
A: Yes.

Q: Does Let's Make Some Noise affect Road Dogg when he uses his ability?
A: Yes. In fact, Let's Make Some Noise has been errated (see below) to allow it to trigger anytime Road Dogg discards a card, for whatever reason. So, when Road Dogg uses his ability, Let's Make Some Noise will trigger. If he discards to a Half Hour Suplex, his ability will trigger, etc. This is opposite of Edge & Christian's Superstar ability which only triggers when they must discard a card.

Q: Can Inferno Match pin my opponent?
A: Anytime a player has to overturn cards for any reason and cannot, he is immediately pinned.

Q: Can I pin myself with an Inferno Match?
A: Yes. If you have no cards left in your Arsenal and you successfully play a card in the Ring, you are forced to overturn one card; if you can't you are pinned.

Q: Do I lose the top card of my Arsenal when playing a reversal from my hand and there is an Inferno Match in play?
A: Yes.

Q: When Inferno Match is on the table does Kane draw a card every time someone takes damage?
A: No. Kane only draws the one card when first playing the Inferno Match.

Q: If I'm playing Jericho and I have an Enter The Stratus-Phere in the Ring, can I discard ONE card to activate BOTH Jericho's ability and the Stratus-Phere?
A: No, for two reasons. You can't use a card to fulfill two costs. You also can't use Jericho's ability before you draw, which is when you have to discard to the Stratus-Phere.

Q: If my opponent has 0F and I have 6F - with a Kick and an Inferno Match in the Ring - and my opponent then plays Comeback, what happens?
A: You will lose the Kick, but since Comeback does not affect actions, you will stay with 1F.

Q: Can you explain when Time Keeper's Bell takes effect?
A: Using the new timing sequence, it happens at Step 8. As soon as the card is successful and before you apply any card effects, you can use the Time Keeper's Bell.

Q: Can I use a reversal or a High Risk maneuver with a Stare Down Opponent?
A: No. Yes, you can ignore the Fortitude, but you still need to meet the requirements of a card in order to play it. So you can't use Stare Down Opponent to play a High Risk move. Nor a reversal. It has to be a card that can be legally played, except you just ignore the Fortitude.

Q: Will a 9th Wonder Of The World be able to return a Mid-match maneuver to a player's hand?
A: No. Mid-match and Pre-match cards never go to the hand. If removed from the Ring, they go Ringside unless it specifically says otherwise.

Q: Can I play other Actions after playing a Turn The Tide and still get the irreversible bonus from it?
A: Yes. Turn The Tide affects the next maneuver you play.

Q: Do I use my Fortitude plus my opponent's Fortitude with a Turn The Tide?
A: No, you only used your opponent's Fortitude.

Q: Can Tazz use his ability after Turn The Tide?
A: Yes. If your opponent has 6F, you may Turn The Tide, then use Tazz's ability to play a Fisherman's Suplex: you'll only need 6F which is what you got.

Q: Can I choose 1 card when I play Do You Like Pie?
A: Yes, you may choose one, however, in some advanced situations, you may wish to choose more than one.

Q: If my opponent has Defensive Posture in his Ring and I play Get Crowd Support to raise the Fortitude Value of his reversals, can he still use the card?
A: Yes. As long as he had the Fortitude to play Defensive Posture to get it in to the Ring, he can discard it no matter how much you pump up the Fortitude requirement.

Q: If I play American Bad A%$ and Power Of Darkness, what would be the total fortitude need for my opponent to play an Escape Move?
A: Since American Bad A%$ has to be in effect first (if you played American Bad A%$ first then American Bad A%$, your turn would end and the POD would finish working). You would double the Fortitude first, then add +20. So an Escape Move would cost 20F to play (0x0+20=20).

REVERSALS AND REVERSING:

Q: What happens to my maneuver after playing a Ref KO'd in response to a Step Aside?
A: The maneuver is sent Ringside. The timing goes like this: You play a maneuver. I play a Step Aside. The maneuver is reversed and Step Aside stays in the Ring - like normal. But then you play Ref KO'd which allows you to continue your turn.

Q: If I overturn an Eye Rake to reverse a maneuver, will my next strike or grapple become irreversible?
A: No. Even though Eye Rake does not specify its effects as working only when playing it from the hand, neither does it explicitly break the rule that overturned reversals do no damage and have no special effects when overturned. So simply, Eye Rake's special irreversible effect does not trigger if it is overturned.

Q: Who can use That's Gonna Cost You!?
A: Only the active player. A card will indicate when the inactive player can use it.

MANEUVERS:

Q: Ok, then can I play a Kick, have it reversed, use the Rabid Wolverine and then play a high risk maneuver played after the 5D or greater maneuver?
A: No. This one falls mostly under the intent of playing cards immediately after another one. Also, since the card is reversed, we can say that the slate is wiped clean for previous maneuvers even if you can continue your turn.

Q: When a successfully play a Leg Drop, does my turn end before damage is dealt?
A: Normally, card effects take place before damage is dealt. In this case, the effect comes AFTER the damage. So you would do your damage and if not reversed, your turn still ends.

Q: What happens when a Trash Can is used from the Ring and is reversed while overturning for damage?
A: It goes to your Ringside pile.

Q: When hit with a Jaw Jammer when do I place my card on top of the Arsenal?
A: Remember, card effects take place before damage so you place the card first, then take damage: yes, you will lose that top card to overturning.

Q: If I slap a Maintain Hold on a Claw, can I search my opponent's Arsenal for 1 card while the Hold is in effect?
A: Yes. And, your opponent still won't be able to reverse the Hold from his hand.

Q: Let's say my opponent has a Fortitude of 10, with two Kicks in the Ring. I play a Jockeying For Position and choose to make my grapple maneuver add +8F to his Fortitude. Ok, I play the Drop Toe Hold, which if successful allows me to remove one card from his Ring. If he cannot reverse it from his hand, what happens?
A: If your opponent cannot reverse it from his hand you can remove one of his Kicks from the Ring, reducing his Fortitude to 5! Therefore, he will not be able to reverse a card while overturning, since he will need a minimum of 8F to reverse your grapple!

BACKLASH FAQ v3 5/7/02

This is the Backlash FAQ. If you do not have a question relating only to a Backlash card or Superstar then you are in the wrong FAQ. You should also read the General FAQ first for basic and general information.

SUPERSTARS:

On all the Tag Teams represented on one card, you CANNOT use tag cards (tag cards have the tag icon). You can only use Tag cards in a Tag Team match. Tag Teams on one card count as a SINGLE Superstar.
Example: Hardy Boyz versus Guerrero is a regular (ok, handicap) match. Your Arsenal cannot have a Trip or Tag In Partner in it. Read the rulebook for more information on what constitutes a Tag Team match.

  Dudley Boyz

All HEEL Foreign Objects in their Arsenal, hand, Ring Area, and Ringside Pile are considered not to have the HEEL trait. A Critical Injury will not affect this, but it will affect their other ability.

You can put FACE cards in a Dudley Arsenal with HEEL Foreign Objects. If you have other HEEL cards (non-Foreign Object Heel cards) then you cannot play FACE.

  Edge & Christian

Their ability does not trigger on cards that give you an option to discard for another effect like Tiger Bomb, Airplane Spin, Half Hour Suplex, etc. It does, however, trigger for Head Butt, Arm Bar, Arm Drag, Scoop Slam, Bulldog, Splash, and Giant Swing.

If an effect requires a discard and they cannot meet this requirement, they cannot draw to gain the benefit of the effect.

  Edge

In an Edge v Edge match, flip a coin to determine who goes first.

TAG TEAM: Edge must be the active player if he wants his team to start first. Otherwise, you determine who goes first as normal. Edge's hand size is equal to the Superstar who is his "opponent". This means that if Edge decides to be the active player first, he will a hand size equal to twice the opposing team's active player. If he is in the inactive player, he uses the Superstar Value of the inactive opponent. In a 4 v 4 Tag Match or larger, and Edge is inactive, he can use the Superstar Value of any of the inactive opponents.

MULTIPLAYER: Edge can choose any opponent's Superstar Value to determine his hand size.

  Christian

Only the card drawing effect is canceled, not the whole card. So a View of Villainy would not allow an opponent to draw a card, but will allow him to look at your hand to discard FACE cards.

The ability is a continuous effect.

He cannot cancel Superstar abilities that have card-drawing effects, like the abilities of D-Von Dudley and Jeff Hardy. He only affects cards that have such effects.

Christian cannot cancel the card drawing effect of an Ego Boost being discarded.

Christian cannot use Giving Away The Business while his ability is active since his ability will kick in first to reverse a card drawing effect.

  RTC

RTC's Superstar ability regarding playing FACE and HEEL cards should read: RTC's Arsenal and Backlash decks cannot contain FACE or HEEL cards.

RTC is considered male for purposes of card effects.

CARDS and RULES:

Q: What is a Backlash deck?
A: A Backlash deck consists of up to 12 cards that contain no more than 6 Pre-match and no more than 6 Mid-match cards. They are not part of your hand and do not count as part of your Arsenal. The deck is separate.

Q: I don't understand how to play Pre-match cards. Can you explain the process?
A: Ok, the player with the highest SV gets to play one Pre-match card of his choice first then you alternate among the next highest SV, etc. Once all have played 3 Pre-match cards or all the players consecutively passed playing a Pre-match card, you draw your starting hand and may look at it. Then you resolve the Pre-match cards played with the highest SV player resolving his first in any order. After all the Pre-match cards are resolved you look for effects that trigger at the end of the Pre-match phase. (This is different than what is cited in the rulebook).

Q: Please give me an example: I'm Christian and I play Awesome Pyro, Givin' 'Em High Fives, and Underrated Superstar.
A: After you have played your Pre-match cards, you will draw your starting hand of 4 cards (Christian's starting hand size). Then we begin to resolve the Pre-match cards and when it is your turn to do so, you will resolve the Pre-match cards in any order you wish. Let's say you resolve High Fives first. You will take 1 card from your Ringside pile and add it to your hand. You now have 5 cards in your hand. You will now resolve Awesome Pyro - if you wish you can discard your hand and redraw 5 cards. Now, Underrated Superstar resolves and looks to see if you have the lowest Superstar Value. If you do, you will add 3 cards to your hand for a total starting hand of 8 cards. If you wanted to, you could have resolved Underrated Superstar first to get you 3 more cards in the hand, then used Awesome Pyro to redraw 8 cards!

Q: Speaking of High Fives, when do you take the 5 cards from the Arsenal and put it Ringside?
A: This is the cost of playing the card so it happens immediately, not at the end of the Pre-match phase.

Q: What if other cards hit the Ringside pile during the Pre-match phase, will High Fives be able to get any one of those or just from the 5 it caused to overturn?
A: You can choose any card in the Ringside pile.

Q: Can I play 3 Awesome Pyros?
A: Yes, and then you would redraw 3 times if you wish. (And if you were playing as Kane, Chris Jericho, Chyna or Kurt Angle, you'd increase your starting hand by 1 each time you redrew!)

Q: On the card Fully Loaded, must I have no cards in my hand to shuffle 4 reversals back into my Arsenal?
A: No. The requirement of having no cards in your hand only applies to the first effect of drawing up to 4 cards.

Q: When exactly can I play Mid-match cards?
A: As soon as the match starts and the first player starts his turn, Mid-match cards become legal.

Q: Ok, then how do I play Mid-match cards from my Backlash deck?
A: Mid-match cards can be fished out as needed and played according to their card type. For example, Dirty Low Blow is a maneuver - so you can only play it on your turn. You don't draw it: you decide whether you want to play it, then go into the Backlash deck and fish it out to play it. If you need a reversal, and it is an opponent's turn, fish it out a mid-match reversal. You play these cards like normal, but instead of drawing them, you use them as needed.

Q: If I played 3 Mid-match cards already and one of them gets removed from the Ring, can I play another?
A: Yes. The restriction is that you can't have more than 3 Mid-match cards in the Ring at any one time.

Q: So if I use one of my Pre-match cards as a Mid-match card, I can still play more Mid-match cards?
A: Yes, as long as you don't have 3 actual Mid-match cards in the Ring already.

Q: Does Edge go first in the Pre-match phase?
A: No, since the match has not started yet: you only look at SV first to determine who plays the first Pre-match card.

Q: Are any Superstar abilities active during the Pre-match phase?
A: Currently, no.

Q: Shouldn't Spectacular Ring Entrance be a Pre-match card?
A: No, it must be played when the regular match starts, after the Pre-match phase. But it must be the first card played by the player who went first. To make it clearer - you can't use it if you go second in a game.

Q: How do I use Old School Wrestling Match?
A: You use it to cancel the next Pre-match card played by an opponent. The card will not resolve: it goes right to the Ringside pile. It will, however, count as one of the 3 Pre-match cards played.

Q: Since Mid-match cards cannot be in anyone's hand, what happens when Chyna plays 9th Wonder Of The World?
A: She cannot target the Mid-match cards since they cannot go into a hand.

Q: If I play an action on my turn, then later in the same turn use a Pre-match card as a Mid-match action, can I use Just Bring It! to stop it?
A: No. Just Bring It! affects action CARDS. Pre-match cards are not action cards.

Q: In a tag match, if my partner and I have Jump The Bell in the Ring and only one of our opponents has Jump The Bell in the Ring, do we still get to play irreversible maneuvers?
A: No. NONE of your opponents must have Jump The Bell in their Ring area for your team to get the benefit of the card.

Q: Can we play Finishers as the irreversible maneuver from a Jump The Bell?
A: No, you still have to meet Fortitude (and other) requirements for playing a maneuver for a Jump The Bell.

Q: When can I play Over Sell Maneuver?
A: This card has been errated (see below) to say that it is played AFTER a successfully played maneuver (but before card effects take place).

Q: Does Over Sell Maneuver reverse?
A: Technically, no. It IS a reversal card so it will be affected by Fortitude plungers (like Get Crowd Support) but its effect is NOT a reversal. The maneuver stays in the Ring adding Fortitude to your opponent, you take the damage it dishes out ignoring any reversals, then you may draw up to 2 cards and end your opponent's turn. Since this effect is not a true reversal, it can be used against cards like Claw, and irreversible maneuvers, like Tree Of Woe.

Q: So Over Sell Maneuver can be used on the likes of Clutch Onto Opponent or Dirty Low Blow?
A: Yes. It doesn't reverse so it bypasses the restrictions put on these two cards.

Q: What happens when you Over Sell a Half Hour Suplex that had some cards discarded to pump up the damage?
A: You take the full damage. According to the timing rules, damage modifiers take place before Over Sell can blank out the text and stop the Half Hour’s special effect.

Q: If I Over Sell a maneuver played after a Prove Me Wrong, does it cancel the Prove Me Wrong's effect?
A: No. And it does go off since the card that was Over Sold is considered successful, thus triggering the effect of Prove Me Wrong.

Q: Is Fans Love An Underdog unbanned and are there any other changes to the card?
A: It is unbanned. Such notices will be found in the General FAQ. Also, errata will be found in the General FAQ. Fans does NOT have any errata. It is not FACE; it is unchanged.

Q: Please explain the use of Brahma Bull.
A: Ok, if you look at the timing sequence at the top, you will notice that Brahma Bull takes effect in step 5. This will help you visualize answers to the questions that arise with this card.

Here are answers to frequently asked Brahma Bull questions:

Q: Benoit uses a European Uppercut as his first maneuver to add +1D to it. Does the maneuver do 6D or 1D when Brahma Bull is in the Ring?
A: 1D. Looking at the timing sequence, Benoit's ability takes effect in step 4. Brahma Bull takes place afterwards, so the sequence goes like this: Benoit plays the Uppercut; it's a 2F 5D card. Benoit's ability kicks in immediately and it now becomes a 6D card. Brahma Bull looks to see if the card played was 4F or less. In this case it is, so Brahma Bull kicks in and reduces the damage done to 1.

Q: I play Juke N' Jive after Ego Boost - what happens?
A: Well, normally, Juke N' Jive would not be affected since it is a 5F maneuver. However, Ego Boost causes it to be considered a 0F maneuver (it takes effect in step 2). So Brahma Bull will effect Juke N' Jive. Same goes for the suplexes that used Tazz's ability to make them 4F or less - Brahma Bull will affect them!

Q: But Juke N' Jive does no damage, so what happens?
A: Ah, true, true. But Brahma Bull's other ability is to make the text blank on a card that it effects. So now Juke N' Jive, which is normally irreversible, now can be reversed in step 6 (or later). Plus, Juke N' Jive will not cause the opponent to overturn cards as it states on the card.

Q: Ok, so if Brahma Bull blanks text of 4F or lower cards, then can I play Falling Fist or Knee Smash without playing a 4D or greater maneuver beforehand?
A: No, because Brahma Bull does not kick in until step 5 and the requirement to play a card happens in step 1, way before Brahma Bull even recognizes the card that is going to be played.

Q: One more Brahma Bull question: what if I have Turn The Match Into A Pier Six Brawl in the Ring, I'm playing Benoit, and have just Irish Whipped into a Punch as my 3rd maneuver and you have Defensive Cover and Brahma Bull out.
A: Well, I go home…no. Looking at the timing sequence, this can easily be figured out. Pier Six, Benoit's ability, and the Whip bonus all happen in step 4. So the Punch comes out to a 13D. Then we go to step 5. Brahma Bull and the Cover kick in. Since these trigger simultaneously, I get to choose the order of effects. So the Brahma Bull can kick in first to reduce the Punch to 1D. Then the Cover comes in and makes it 0.

Q: Can I discard Brahma Bull from the Ring with Shake It Off, Drop Toe Hold, etc?
A: Yes. Brahma Bull is a card in the ring so it can be discarded by these effects. NOTE: In This Very Ring will not work because it only affects action cards and Brahma Bull is not an action card.

Q: Onto other cards: Clutch Onto Opponent + Apply Illegal Leverage - is this legal?
A: Yes. The Leverage copies the effects of the previous card, which in this case is the Clutch. Also, remember, though, that only a Clean Break will be able to reverse the Illegal Leverage.

Q: What if I play another Illegal Leverage after the above combo?
A: Same deal. It will have the effect of the Clutch.

Q: What if I slap a Maintain Hold after the above combo?
A: You cannot play a Hold after Clutch + Apply Illegal Leverage. Illegal Leverage takes the wording of its previous submission and in this case that's the Clutch. And the Clutch says you can't put a Hold after it.

Q: Can Clean Break reverse Clutch while overturning? A: No. Clean Break reverses these cards as it would reverse a Jockeying For Position: namely, only from the hand. Also, Clean Break will trigger its discard effect if reversing from the hand and allow you to draw 1 card too. (Same goes for reversing Half Hour Suplex).

Q: Can Defensive Posture reverse a Clutch Onto Opponent?
A: No. See the Golden Rules section in the General FAQ.

Q: Can Where Are Your Medals or Censored reverse reversals?
A: In most cases it is no. In the odd case, you can reverse the likes of a Ref KO'd played after it reverses your Step Aside. To explain: you may only play a reversal on your opponent's turn, unless is specifies otherwise (like Ref KO'd and Disqualification). So, if your opponent plays Kick, you Step Aside, they play Ref KO'd, you may Censor that as you are playing it on their turn, and thus can legally play a reversal. Medals and Censored do not allow you to play reversals out of turn.

Q: Can Where Are Your Medals or Censored reverse irreversible cards?
A: No. Remember the golden rule above.

Q: Can I use a reversal from my Backlash deck to reverse Claw or Dirty Low Blow?
A: Yes, because reversing from the Backlash deck is not the same as reversing from the hand, just like playing a card from your Backlash deck is not the same thing as playing a card from your hand.

Q: How do I play Lita To The Xtreme?
A: After your maneuver of 4D or more is reversed, you discard Lita to allow you to continue your turn, BUT you must play a High Risk move next or your turn is over. Lita does not break the chain of effects for this High Risk move so you can play a Falling Fist if a Samoan Drop was reversed and you discarded Lita from the Ring.

Q: Can I play a Swanton Bomb after Lita To The Xtreme?
A: No, the Bomb is a Trademark Finisher, not a High Risk maneuver.

Q: Can I discard one card to Half Hour Suplex, then decide to discard another two, then decide to discard again, etc.?
A: When you play the Half Hour Suplex, you declare how many cards you are discarding and then discard them: that is the bonus you get.

Q: So if I was Road Dogg with Let's Make Some Noise in the Ring, I could not discard cards to the Half Hour Suplex, draw, discard them again, draw, etc.?
A: Correct. You choose how many you cards you discard with the Half Hour Suplex when you play the Suplex.

Q: If a Busted Wide Open is removed from the Ring, does its effect still happen?
A: No. Cards that have an effect while in the Ring no longer have that effect when removed. Inferno Match is another example. See the Golden Rules in the General FAQ.

Q: Can I use Million Dollar Smile more than once in a turn?
A: Yes. And you can use it in multiple turns as long as it is in the Ring.

Q: Can No Chance In Hell reverse a Mid-match action when played from the Backlash deck or if a Pre-match event is used as a Mid-match action from the Ring?
A: No. No Chance only reverse actions played from the hand. Just Bring It! will be able to reverse such an action if it is not the first action played by the opponent.

Q: When Premiere WWF Superstar is resolved, where do the cards that go into the Ringside pile come from?
A: The Arsenal.

Q: Does Put It All On The Line break the chain?
A: No, you can play a High Risk maneuver if the previous successful maneuver fulfills the requirement needed by the High Risk move.

Q: Con-Chair-To says it cannot be reversed by When You Thought You Had All The Answers, but WYTYHATA says it can reverse any Finisher, even those that cannot be reversed. Which wins out?
A: The Con-Chair-To wins out.

Q: If I do not have the Fortitude to reverse a Trademark Finisher, can I use When You Thought You Had All The Answers... to reverse it?
A: No. WYTYHATA refers to a Finisher not being able to be reversed from a card effect or from the card itself. It does not kick in if you don't have the Fortitude to reverse it.

Q: Can you play a Swanton Bomb after From The Top Rope?
A: No. While you can search for Swanton Bomb after playing From The Top Rope, it is still considered a Trademark Finisher so you can't ignore the "Can only be played after" text as specified in the text of Top Rope.

Q: Are Backlash decks allowed in a tournament?
A: Yes. If for some reason your opponent does not have a Backlash deck, you may still play yours. What you do in a friendly, non-tournament game is up to the players involved.

  TWO MAN POWER TRIP (2MPT)

Q: What does it means they can play or be affected by cards that affect Stone Cold or Triple H?
A: It means that if the TEXT of a card refers to either Triple H or Stone Cold, you will be affected as if playing Triple H or Stone Cold. For example: If you use a Neck Breaker on 2MPT, you get to look at their hand as if the player was playing Stone Cold.

Q: Can 2MPT play No Sell Maneuver or Over Sell Maneuver?
A: No. Remember, the 2MPT Superstar card counts as Stone Cold and Triple H. No Sell can only be played by certain wrestlers and Triple H is not one of them. Similar logic applies to Over Sell. Stone Cold cannot play Over Sell, hence the 2MPT cannot play Over Sell.

Here is a list of cards that refer to Stone Cold and Triple H in their text:

Neck Breaker
Brainbuster
No Sell Maneuver
Over Sell Maneuver
Amazing Display Of Power
I Did it For You

Q: The 2MPT Superstar card says it can play Triple H and Stone Cold foils. I have a promo Stone Cold Stunner, which is not a foil. Can they use this?
A: Promos finishers count as foils for this purpose.

Q: If Backlash decks are not used in a game, does the 2MPT ability to add 3 cards to their starting hands kick in?
A: No. Since no Backlash decks are used, there is no end of Pre-match phase. However, if at least one person is using a Backlash deck, then yes, they do draw 3 cards if appropriate.

Q: Can you describe how to use ...'Cause Stone Cold Said So!?
A: Well, first, it does not break the chain of effects. You can play a maneuver then discard this to play a High Risk maneuver you don't have the Fortitude to play, as long as the requirements are met from the previous card.

Q: If I am playing in a Tag Team Match using 2MPT, can my partner play Stone Cold or Triple H?
A: No. This applies to all tag team Superstars: you cannot play the tag team Superstar card and your partner play one of the individuals.

  BROTHERS OF DESTRUCTION (BoD)

Q: Can I play the Superstar foils of the Superstars represented by the BoD Superstar card?
A: Unlike the 2MPT card, you CANNOT use the Superstar foils of Kane, Undertaker and Deadman, Inc. To compensate for this, they have other abilities.

Q: But they are still affected by cards that reference them in their text?
A: Correct. If an Awesome Pyro is played by BoD, you will get to draw an extra card, because Awesome Pyro says that if played by Kane, you get to draw another card. Another example allows you to play Armageddon WWF Style at -10F because you are Undertaker in effect.

Here is a list of cards that refer to Taker or Kane in their text:

Inferno Match
American Bad Ass
No Sell Maneuver
Over Sell Maneuver
Armageddon WWF Style
Brothers 'Til The End
Awesome Pyro

Q: What does the stop sign + two-hands symbol on Throttled Within An Inch Of Your Life mean?
A: That is the new Restricted Modification Symbol. It means that no card may modify Throttled. Not your Power Of Darkness nor Get Crowd Support, etc., nor your opponent’s Brahma Bull or Running Lariat, etc. Also, the key word is “modify”: you can still reverse Throttled
as stated on the card or using cards like Backlash!, Defensive Posture, etc.

Q: When I play Throttled Within An Inch Of Your Life, if I turn over a reversal I can't play (maybe I don't have the fortitude), does that count as "an applicable reversal"?
A: No. It means you have to overturn 2 reversals that you would have been able to use to reverse the maneuver.

Q: So if I play Throttled and my opponent overturns two applicable reversals, is my turn over?
A: Yes.

Q: If he goes down to one card and does not reverse the Throttled, is my turn over?
A: No.

Q: Can I Over Sell a Throttled?
A: Yes you can, but you will still have to overturn 2 appropriate reversals or go down to one card in the Arsenal. The restricted modification symbol stops Over Sell’s ability to blank out the text of
Throttled. However, you will end the player’s turn.

Q: Can Throttled be removed from the Ring?
A: Yes. See the
RMS Document for more info.

Q: Does CHAINS OF DESTRUCTION work every turn? And if I played the card, do I have to overturn every turn?
A: Yes and yes, as long as it is in the Ring of course.

Q: Does Chains Of Destruction work every turn?
A: Yes, as long as it is in the Ring.

Q: Above you mention that the BoD can play Armageddon at -10F. What about the other text on that card that says, "If played in a tag team match, and your team consists of Undertaker and Kane, you may each draw 1 card." As BoD in a tag match, can I draw a card? And if so, do I draw 1 card or one each as Kane and Taker?
A: You can draw a card, but only one card.

Q: If I am playing in a Tag Team Match using BoD, can my partner play Undertaker, Deadman or Kane?
A: No. This applies to all tag team Superstars: you cannot play the tag team Superstar card and your partner play one of the individuals.

Q: Can Calling You Out bring out an opponent’s Mid-match card?
A: No, you can only bring out a Pre-match card. And you resolve it as if the player owning the card had played it himself.

MANIA FAQ v2 5/20/02

This is the Mania FAQ. If you do not have a question relating only to a Mania card or Superstar then you are in the wrong FAQ. You should also read the General FAQ first for basic and general information.

GLOBAL RULE:

With the release of Mania, you may now have up to 8 Pre-match and 8 Mid-Match cards in your Backlash deck. Also, you may now have up to 4 of each in your Ring area at one time. (A couple of places in the rulebook states the old Backlash configuration).

SUPERSTARS:

  Rob Van Dam

You can discard a Strike to play a High Risk at reduced fortitude and vice versa.

You cannot discard Chair Shot to both his ability and to the Van Daminator. (you do not get a -10F to play the Van Daminator)

Discarding a card to reduce the Fortitude Value of another card can trigger such cards as Brahma Bull.

  Lita

You can search for any card with “drop kick” in the title and this includes Lita's Drop Kick, but does not include Fully Loaded's Missile Dropkick (since "dropkick" in this case is one word, not two).

Only the card Drop Kick can be played for 0F using her ability.

  Big Show

Big Show's Superstar ability regarding High Risk maneuvers should read: Big Show may not have High Risk cards in his Arsenal or Backlash deck (this include High Risk hybrids).

You must discard two cards anytime you play a maneuver after you have played the first one in the same turn.  So the first maneuver, there is no penalty. If you want to play another one you must discard 2 cards. If you wan to play a third, you must discard 2 cards, etc… Note: using a Trash Can is the same as playing it and so he must discard 2 cards if it is not the first maneuver.

While he cannot play High Risk maneuvers, he can play High Risk hybrids and use them as reversals and actions.  (For example he may play the Flying Reverse Elbow as an Action.)

Since Big Show’s ability reduces Grapples to a maximum of 3D, you can use cards like Elbow To The Face, Clumsy Opponent etc. to reverse them.

Opponents may play Grapples that do more than 3D on Big Show; the damage will just be reduced to 3D - which will affect the playing of certain High Risk cards.

If Big Show takes damage from the Reversal part of a hybrid Grapple/Reversal, the damage is not maxed to 3. Also, a Rolling Takedown against a Grapple played by Big Show will not max out at 3 since it’s a Reversal doing the damage.

  APA

Their Superstar Ability regarding Actions should read like this: APA cannot have Action cards (including hybrids) in their Arsenal. Note: this means they can have it in their Backlash deck.

  WILLIAM REGAL

His ability to search for certain cards, especially the FACE and HEEL cards does NOT allow you to build an illegal Arsenal. The ability just allows you a wider range of searching depending on whether you build him FACE or HEEL.

CARDS and RULES:

Q: Can I remove a stipulation?
A: No. This is stated in the rulebook. The only exception currently is that Duchess Of Queensbury can remove a Hell In A Cell Match.

Q: If I don’t play a stipulation, can I still play 4 Pre-match cards?
A: Yes.

Q: How many Stips can I play?
A: Each player may play only one per match and it must be the first card played.

Q: Are Stips cumulative? If I play an INDIAN STRAP MATCH and so does my opponent, will we have to discard 2 cards to play any non-Set-Up actions?
A: Yes.

Q: Can I OLD SCHOOL a stipulation?
A: No, because in the Stip phase, you can only play a Stip. Once each player has had a chance to play one, then you can only play normal Pre-match cards.

Q: Does Hell In A Cell Match prevent the usage of Undertaker’s ability?
A: No. The card affects cards played that move cards from Ringside and therefore does not affect Superstar abilities like Undertaker’s.

Q: Can Two-Man Power Trip benefit from a Hell In A Cell Match?
A: Yes, since Triple H’s foils are not affected.

Q: Can Hell In A Cell Match stop you from getting a card from a Givin' 'Em High Fives?
A: Yes. Though you’d still have to overturn 5 cards if for some reason you still decided to play the card. Stip cards take effect immediately unless they say otherwise.

Q: Can you explain how to use the Duchess Of Queensbury Rules in regards to the Count Out clause?
A: Ok, a Count Out happens at the end of any turn in which someone does not have cards in their Arsenal. So, if you have no cards at the end of ANY turn, and you are about to be Counted Out, you can place the card in the Ringside pile and shuffle any 8 cards into your Arsenal so that you won't get Counted Out.

Q: For TLC Match - do you have to leave room for Table, Ladder and Chair, and in your Backlash deck, or can they just be added in?  In other words, if you already have your 16, can you put a Ladder in there?  Or would you have to have only SEVEN Mid-Match to leave room for the Ladder?
A: You do not need to leave room. They get added to the deck and do not count towards the total.

Q: Is playing and overturning the same thing for Censorship Match?
A: No. The definition of "playing a card" has changed. See the
General FAQ. Note: this overturns a previous FAQ ruling.

Q: With Censorship Match can you name a card with the Restricted Modification Symbol?
A: Yes. See the RMS Document for more detailed info.

Q: Can you stop a Pre-match card being used as a Mid-match effect with Censorship Match?
A: No. This overturns a previous FAQ ruling.

Q: In a Four Corners Match with Not Done With Any Flair in the Ring, if I play my last Touch Turnbuckle, can my opponent stop me from winning in this case?
A: No, because the Touch Turnbuckle cards do not specify a Victory Condition: it’s the Four Corners Match that does. So Not Done cannot trigger.

Q: If you play the card titled Money Talks, BS Walks and the next card you play is your Trademark Finisher, can it still be reversed by When You Thought You Had All The Answers... (WYTYHATA)?
A: No. The text on Money Talks prevents the playing of a card from your Backlash deck and not really causing the Finisher to be irreversible.

Q: Does the Pre-match stipulation Not Done With Any Flair work only once, or as many times as opponent tries to win by a victory condition?
A: As many times.

Q: Can you play Here Comes The Money to reverse something like Brothers 'Til The End?
A: Much like Where Are Your Medals, you CANNOT reverse a Reversal unless it specifically says so on the card.

Q: If you play X-Treme Measures and your opponent Over Sells the maneuver that follows what happens? Can you even Over Sell it?
A: Yes you can Over Sell the maneuver and since your opponent’s turn ends without fulfilling the playing of a High Risk, he must discard his hand.

Q: If you have Torrie Wilson, On It! in play, and your opponent is Angle with Intelligence in play, can you put you whole hand under Torrie all in one go, because your hand is constantly being shown, or only once per turn?
A: Neither. You may put one card under Torrie when Intelligence first resolves. Since it is a continuous effect it does not trigger Torrie’s text.

Q: How does Torrie interact with Billy Gunn's Superstar ability?
A:
Showing your hand is a mandatory cost of Gunn’s ability and therefore TORRIE is activated. This is a reversal of a previous ruling.

Q: If I discard a Welllllllllll!!! on my first turn then play a Pump Kick, will I get the benefit of the Pump Kick?
A: Yes. Since the definition of "playing a card" has changed, using Wellllllllllll does not constitute playing a card thus triggering Pump Kick's effect.

Q: Can you play V.K.M's Patented Big Gulp as a Reversal when you have no cards in your hand?
A: Yes. You will “discard” your hand, though there is nothing there.

Q: How does V.K.M's Patented Big Gulp and Signed Contract From Linda McMahon interact?
A: Your opponent has to discard enough cards to equal the number of cards in his hand. So if you have 5 cards in hand, and your opponent 7, he will have to discard 2 to equal your 5. You do NOT discard cards equal to the number of cards in hand.

Q: Can you play Sustained Damage if you reverse from your Backlash deck?
A: No. While the card may suggest this, we are ruling that you cannot respond to an effect with two reversals.

Q: Can I use Sustained Damage to lower the damage a maneuver is doing from say, 8D to 6D, then reverse it with an Elbow from the hand?
A: No! However, if you OVERTURN an Elbow, it will reverse it. Note that Sustained Damage only works once you decide to let a card be successful and do damage to you. You then discard to lower the damage before overturning.

Q: If I use Sustained Damage to reduce a card from 7D to 3D, can my opponent follow up with a High Risk maneuver that requires a 5D or greater maneuver?
A: No, because the damage was reduced to 3D.

Q: Can you use Sustained Damage on irreversible cards?
A: Yes. It does not reverse. Note: it does get affected by fortitude modifiers to reversals, but not while in play.

Q: Can you use Sustained Damage on a card with the Restricted Modification Symbol?
A: No. See the
RMS Document elsewhere for more detail.

Q: If Triple H had Cerebral Assassin in play, then discards his hand to power up an Half Hour Suplex, would Big Show take the full damage or only 3D?
A: Full damage. Cerebral would trigger before damage is finished modifying. By then, Big Show’s ability is blank.

Q: Is Cerebral Assassin’s effect continuous?
A: Yes. As soon as you have 4 or less cards in your hand, your opponent’s Superstar ability is blank. As soon as you have more than 4, the ability comes back.

Q: If I have 3 cards in my hand and 2 under Keibler's Cookies, will Cerebral Assassin trigger?
A: Yes, since the cards under Keibler do not count toward your hand size.

Q: Can I play Fortitude Surge in response to an Undertaker Sits Up or Kane's Return or other reversal that modifies fortitude?
A: No. You cannot reverse a reversal unless it specifically says so on the card.

Q: Can I use Cuz Stone Cold Said So to play Mania to ignore the Fortitude Value?
A: No. You cannot disregard any value on a card with the Restricted Modification Symbol. See the writeup for the RMS in a separate document.

Q: Do I put the 2 cards under Keibler only when I first play it?
A: No, you can place up to 2 cards while it is in the Ring. It cannot hold more than 2 cards though.

Q: If I have cards underneath Keibler's Cookies and I have to discard my hand, do I discard the cards underneath too?
A: No, they are only considered PLAYED from the hand, not part of your hand. (Meaning you have to meet the rules for playing such cards as if they were in your hand.)

Q: So can I play a reversal from under Keibler if it says it cannot be reversed from the hand?
A: No, because any card played in this manner is considered played from the hand.

Q: When playing Judgment Day, especially as Angle, is it the total number of Face and Heel or choose one?
A: You choose either Face or Heel.

Q: How does Trailer Park Trash interact with Kissing Up To The Stinkin' Fans?
A: Trailer removes the word “face” in Kissing to have the first sentence read as such: Reverse any Action card if it is the second Action played this turn OR if opponent has five or more cards in his Ring area.

Q: Can you play Little She Devil in a Two-Man Power Trip deck while playing in a single match?
A: Yes. Normally, you can only play TAG cards while playing in a tag match. However, this card states it allows you to play it if your Superstar says it can only play tag team title belts. And this can happen whether in a tag match or standard one-on-one match. Same goes for cards like Stackplex and other cards with similar wording.

Q: Can APA play Little She Devil?
A: No, since APA’s Superstar ability overrides the card: they can’t have Actions in their deck and this is an Action card.

Q: If I play an Ayatollah Of Rock‘N Roll-A then later in the turn I play and win the Test Of Strength, what happens?
A: Your opponent can still be able to overturn an applicable reversal. See the writeup on the Restricted Modification Symbol on a separate document.

Q: Can Spike Dudley play Test Of Strength?
A: Yes. Even though there is no printed number on the card, it’s not 4 or greater so he can play it.

Q: If my opponent plays Test Of Strength, can I overturn a reversal to stop the damage?
A: Yes.

Q: What if my opponent plays Test Of Strength and he LOSES! Can he overturn a Reversal to stop the damage?
A: No. You can’t play a reversal on your turn unless it specifically says so.

Q: Do you have to discard cards when you overturn a Psychotic Bump?
A: No. It is not a requirement to reverse the cards listed so you can ignore that effect.

Q: Can I play a Remove Corner Turnbuckle if my opponent does not have any cards with the words “touch turnbuckle” in the Ring?
A: Yes.

Q: What can I retrieve with a Billion Dollar Princess?
A: You can only get foil Superstar specific cards, like I Am The Game, Tree Of Woe, etc. (Note premium foils like Puppies! Puppies! cannot be retrieved as they are Superstar specific foils. You also cannot retrieve Superstar specific cards that are not foils like B.A.’s Military Press Slam, From The Bowery, etc. Note: non-foil promo card versions of Superstar specific foils, like The People's Elbow, and Crippler Crossface are retrievable with Billion Dollar Princess.

Q: Can Totally Bogus reverse Beer, Cards, And More Beer?
A: Yes, since Beer potentially allows you to draw more than 1 card.

Q: If you Over Sell a maneuver played after a Beer, does it cancel Beer’s effect?
A: No. The maneuver was considered successful and thus triggers Beer. Over Sell cannot affect that card. This is the same ruling as Over Sell vs Prove Me Wrong.

Q: Can Crimson Goddess and Spinnerooni reverse irreversible maneuvers like Over Sell?
A: No. While the cards have the same "blanking" effect as Over Sell, the first sentence reads like other reversals, not like Over Sell.

Q: Does one Slandered Online get rid of all copies of Fans Love An Underdog?
A: No.

Q: If I am Edge & Christian and I play VKM as a reversal what happens?
A: You will get to draw the amount of cards you would have discarded.

RESTRICTED MODIFICATION SYMBOL

Many questions have arisen regarding the play of cards with the Restricted Modification Symbol (RMS). This document will explain the use of such cards within RAW DEAL.

First, why have such a symbol? The reason is that a card with this symbol is so powerful that we don't want it to combo of anything and not to make it hard for a player affected by such a card to stop it.

In a nutshell, a RMS card creates a tunnel-vision effect that ONLY looks at the RMS card, the player it is affecting, and allows a basic, unalterable, applicable reversal (unless the text on the RMS card says otherwise: card text on an RMS overrides this rule).

Let us use this analogy: When an RMS card is played a bubble is formed. This bubble isolates the RMS card, causing it to void or ignore any cards played before it that affects the card, the player playing the card, the player being affected by the RMS card and his cards. When the RMS card resolves, the bubble bursts and play continues normally.

Let's expand this idea further, with examples. I play Get Crowd Support, which normally gives me a +4D to my next maneuver and causes my opponent's Reversals to it to cost +12F. If I were to follow it up with Throttled Within An Inch Of Your Life, the bubble that forms ignores the effect of the Get Crowd Support completely: I do not get the +4D bonus and my opponent does not suffer the +12F to his reversals. The bubble isolates the Throttled and it ignores the Crowd Support's effect. It allows my opponent to reverse the card normally (as stated on the Throttled itself)

What is important to note is that Throttled will also break the chain in the above example: meaning while it does not get the Support's bonus, it also prevents your next maneuver from getting the bonus. You voided out that bonus by playing the RMS card.

So the bubble not only isolates the card from such effects, it also breaks any chains.

  MORE EXAMPLES:

Test Of Strength, released in Mania, is an RMS card. While your Test cannot be reversed from the hand, you can still reverse it from the Backlash deck, the Ring, and even while overturning (remember, the text on Test regarding not reversing from the hand does override the general RMS rule).

You can still Over Sell it, but it won't blank the text and you still have to conduct the Test as normal. However, you will not be able to reverse by overturning an applicable reversal since you used a reversal card already.

Test can be reversed while overturning if your opponent lost your Test and is applying damage (you cannot reverse while overturning if you lost your own Test) normally. A card like Ayatollah cannot stop an opponent from reversing it from the Arsenal since the RMS bubble voids or ignores Ayatollah's effect.

Mania is an RMS card. You cannot use Cause Stone Cold Said So on it to ignore the Fortitude Value of Mania. Again, the bubble ignores such an effect.

Once an RMS card resolves, the bubble "bursts" and the card can be affected normally. You may remove an RMS card from the Ring using Drop Toe Hold for example.

You may follow it with an applicable High Risk move. If one of your Actions is an RMS card Just Bring It can be used if it is part of the 2nd or greater Action played in a turn.

If a card needs to follow a successful card then it can follow the RMS card.

The exception to this rule is that you are NOT allowed to play a Maintain Hold on an RMS card. (If you wonder why, think about the Test Of Strength/Maintain Hold combo while First To Tap Out Match is in play).

One final thing: the RMS is not active while the card is in your hand, Arsenal, Backlash deck, or Ringside pile. So, if a card prevents the reversing from the Backlash deck, and you have an RMS Reversal, it is not active and therefore cannot ignore the effect of that card. To give another example, found in Mania, if you play Censorship Match, you can name an RMS card and that card cannot be played. Remember, the bubble does not form on the RMS card until it is played.

TO SUMMARIZE:

What CANNOT affect an RMS card?

When the RMS is played (i.e. the bubble is up) you cannot affect any portion of the RMS card. You cannot remove, ignore or change the text, Damage Value or Fortitude Value on an RMS card. You cannot make it irreversible by using another card's effect. Superstar abilities cannot affect an RMS card: Benoit's +D ability is voided for that card, though the next card will get the proper damage bonus (if he played 2 maneuvers and the RMS card was the 3rd, it does not get the +3, but his next maneuver that turn would). Mankind cannot reduce the damage of an RMS card.

You cannot affect a player's ability to reverse an RMS card in any way except what is stated on the RMS card itself. The player has a normal base chance to reverse such a card with an applicable reversal. So you can't plunge his Fortitude by giving his Reversals a +F modifier. (In multiplayer games, assume this rule applies to all opponents trying to reverse an RMS card even if they are not targeted.)

You cannot play Maintain Hold on an RMS card.

Also, remember, RMS cards break chains.

What CAN affect an RMS card?

When the bubble bursts (i.e. the card finishes resolving) you may:
Play a High Risk off an RMS card if applicable.
Remove the card from the Ring.
Affect an RMS card while it is in the Arsenal, Backlash deck or Ringside as a normal card.
