BACKLASH FAQ v5 5/20/02
This is the
Backlash FAQ. If you do not have a question relating only to a Backlash card or
Superstar then you are in the wrong FAQ. You should also read the General
FAQ first for basic and general information.
SUPERSTARS:
On all the Tag Teams represented on one card, you CANNOT use tag cards (tag
cards have the tag icon). You can only use Tag cards in a Tag Team match. Tag
Teams on one card count as a SINGLE Superstar.
Example: Hardy Boyz versus Guerrero is a regular (ok, handicap) match. Your
Arsenal cannot have a Trip or Tag In Partner in it. Read the
rulebook for more information on what constitutes a Tag Team match.
Dudley Boyz
All HEEL Foreign Objects in their Arsenal, hand, Ring Area, and Ringside Pile
are considered not to have the HEEL trait. A Critical Injury will not
affect this, but it will affect their other ability.
You can put FACE cards in a Dudley Arsenal with HEEL Foreign Objects. If you
have other HEEL cards (non-Foreign Object Heel cards) then you cannot play FACE.
Edge & Christian
Their ability does not trigger on cards that give you an option to discard for
another effect like Tiger Bomb, Airplane Spin, Half Hour Suplex,
etc. It does, however, trigger for Head Butt, Arm Bar, Arm Drag,
Scoop Slam, Bulldog, Splash, and Giant Swing.
If
an effect requires a discard and they cannot meet this requirement, they cannot
draw to gain the benefit of the effect.
Edge
In an Edge v Edge match, flip a coin to determine who goes first.
TAG TEAM:
Edge must be the active player if he wants his team to start first. Otherwise,
you determine who goes first as normal. Edge's hand size is equal to the
Superstar who is his "opponent". This means that if Edge decides to be
the active player first, he will a hand size equal to twice the opposing team's
active player. If he is in the inactive player, he uses the Superstar Value of
the inactive opponent. In a 4 v 4 Tag Match or larger, and Edge is inactive, he
can use the Superstar Value of any of the inactive opponents.
MULTIPLAYER:
Edge can choose any opponent's Superstar Value to determine his hand size.
Christian
Only the card drawing effect is canceled, not the whole card. So a View
of Villainy would not allow an opponent to draw a card, but will allow him
to look at your hand to discard FACE cards.
The ability is a continuous effect.
He cannot cancel Superstar abilities that have card-drawing effects, like the
abilities of D-Von Dudley and Jeff Hardy. He only affects cards that have such
effects.
Christian cannot cancel the card drawing effect of an Ego Boost being discarded.
Christian cannot use
Giving Away The Business while his ability is active since his ability
will kick in first to reverse a card drawing effect.
RTC
RTC's Superstar ability
regarding playing FACE and HEEL cards should read: RTC's Arsenal and Backlash
decks cannot contain FACE or HEEL cards.
RTC is considered
male for purposes of card effects.
CARDS and RULES:
Q: What is a Backlash deck?
A: A Backlash deck consists of up to 12 cards that contain no more than 6
Pre-match and no more than 6 Mid-match cards. They are not part of your hand and
do not count as part of your Arsenal. The deck is separate.
Q: I don't understand how to play Pre-match cards. Can you explain the process?
A: Ok, the player with the highest SV gets to play one Pre-match card of his
choice first then you alternate among the next highest SV, etc. Once all have
played 3 Pre-match cards or all the players consecutively passed playing a
Pre-match card, you draw your starting hand and may look at it. Then you resolve
the Pre-match cards played with the highest SV player resolving his first in any
order. After all the Pre-match cards are resolved you look for effects that
trigger at the end of the Pre-match phase. (This is different than what is cited
in the rulebook).
Q: Please give me an example: I'm Christian and I play Awesome Pyro, Givin'
'Em High Fives, and Underrated Superstar.
A: After you have played your Pre-match cards, you will draw your starting hand
of 4 cards (Christian's starting hand size). Then we begin to resolve the
Pre-match cards and when it is your turn to do so, you will resolve the
Pre-match cards in any order you wish. Let's say you resolve High Fives
first. You will take 1 card from your Ringside pile and add it to your hand. You
now have 5 cards in your hand. You will now resolve Awesome Pyro - if you
wish you can discard your hand and redraw 5 cards. Now, Underrated Superstar
resolves and looks to see if you have the lowest Superstar Value. If you do, you
will add 3 cards to your hand for a total starting hand of 8 cards. If you
wanted to, you could have resolved Underrated Superstar first to get you
3 more cards in the hand, then used Awesome Pyro to redraw 8 cards!
Q: Speaking of High Fives, when do you take the 5 cards from the Arsenal
and put it Ringside?
A: This is the cost of playing the card so it happens immediately, not at the
end of the Pre-match phase.
Q: What if other cards hit the Ringside pile during the Pre-match phase, will High
Fives be able to get any one of those or just from the 5 it caused to
overturn?
A: You can choose any card in the Ringside pile.
Q: Can I play 3 Awesome Pyros?
A: Yes, and then you would redraw 3 times if you wish. (And if you were playing
as Kane, Chris Jericho, Chyna or Kurt Angle, you'd increase your starting hand
by 1 each time you redrew!)
Q: On the card Fully Loaded, must I have no cards in my hand to shuffle 4
reversals back into my Arsenal?
A: No. The requirement of having no cards in your hand only applies to the first
effect of drawing up to 4 cards.
Q: When exactly can I play Mid-match cards?
A: As soon as the match starts and the first player starts his turn, Mid-match
cards become legal.
Q: Ok, then how do I play Mid-match cards from my Backlash deck?
A: Mid-match cards can be fished out as needed and played according to their
card type. For example, Dirty Low Blow is a maneuver - so you can only
play it on your turn. You don't draw it: you decide whether you want to play it,
then go into the Backlash deck and fish it out to play it. If you need a
reversal, and it is an opponent's turn, fish it out a mid-match reversal. You
play these cards like normal, but instead of drawing them, you use them as
needed.
Q: If I played 3 Mid-match cards already and one of them gets removed from the
Ring, can I play another?
A: Yes. The restriction is that you can't have more than 3 Mid-match cards in
the Ring at any one time.
Q: So if I use one of my Pre-match cards as a Mid-match card, I can still play
more Mid-match cards?
A: Yes, as long as you don't have 3 actual Mid-match cards in the Ring already.
Q: Does Edge go first in the Pre-match phase?
A: No, since the match has not started yet: you only look at SV first to
determine who plays the first Pre-match card.
Q: Are any Superstar abilities active during the Pre-match phase?
A: Currently, no.
Q: Shouldn't Spectacular Ring Entrance be a Pre-match card?
A: No, it must be played when the regular match starts, after the Pre-match
phase. But it must be the first card played by the player who went first. To
make it clearer - you can't use it if you go second in a game.
Q: How do I use Old School Wrestling Match?
A: You use it to cancel the next Pre-match card played by an opponent. The card
will not resolve: it goes right to the Ringside pile. It will, however, count as
one of the 3 Pre-match cards played.
Q: Since Mid-match cards cannot be in anyone's hand, what happens when Chyna
plays 9th Wonder Of The World?
A: She cannot target the Mid-match cards since they cannot go into a hand.
Q: If I play an action on my turn, then later in the same turn use a Pre-match
card as a Mid-match action, can I use Just Bring It! to stop it?
A: No. Just Bring It! affects action CARDS. Pre-match cards are not
action cards.
Q: In a tag match, if my partner and I have Jump The Bell in the Ring and
only one of our opponents has Jump The Bell in the Ring, do we still get
to play irreversible maneuvers?
A: No. NONE of your opponents must have Jump The Bell in their Ring area
for your team to get the benefit of the card.
Q: Can we play Finishers as the irreversible maneuver from a Jump The Bell?
A: No, you still have to meet Fortitude (and other) requirements for playing a
maneuver for a Jump The Bell.
Q: When can I play Over Sell Maneuver?
A: This card has been errated (see below) to say that it is played AFTER a
successfully played maneuver (but before card effects take place).
Q: Does Over Sell Maneuver reverse?
A: Technically, no. It IS a reversal card so it will be affected by Fortitude
plungers (like Get Crowd Support) but its effect is NOT a reversal. The
maneuver stays in the Ring adding Fortitude to your opponent, you take the
damage it dishes out ignoring any reversals, then you may draw up to 2 cards and
end your opponent's turn. Since this effect is not a true reversal, it can be
used against cards like Claw, and irreversible maneuvers, like Tree Of
Woe.
Q: So Over Sell Maneuver can be used on the likes of Clutch Onto
Opponent or Dirty Low Blow?
A: Yes. It doesn't reverse so it bypasses the restrictions put on these two
cards.
Q: What
happens when you Over Sell a Half Hour Suplex that had some cards
discarded to pump up the damage?
A: You
take the full damage. According to the timing rules, damage modifiers take place
before Over Sell can blank out the text and stop the Half Hour’s
special effect.
Q: If
I Over Sell a maneuver played after a Prove Me Wrong, does it
cancel the Prove Me Wrong's effect?
A: No.
And it does go off since the card that was Over Sold is considered
successful, thus triggering the effect of Prove Me Wrong.
Q: Is Fans Love An
Underdog unbanned and are there any other changes to the card?
A: It is unbanned. Such notices will be found in the General
FAQ. Also, errata will be found in the General FAQ. Fans does NOT
have any errata. It is not FACE; it is unchanged.
Q: Please explain
the use of Brahma Bull.
A: Ok, if you look at the timing sequence at the top, you will notice that Brahma
Bull takes effect in step 5. This will help you visualize answers to the
questions that arise with this card.
Here are answers to frequently asked Brahma Bull questions:
Q: Benoit uses a European Uppercut as his first maneuver to add +1D to
it. Does the maneuver do 6D or 1D when Brahma Bull is in the Ring?
A: 1D. Looking at the timing sequence, Benoit's ability takes effect in step 4. Brahma
Bull takes place afterwards, so the sequence goes like this: Benoit plays
the Uppercut; it's a 2F 5D card. Benoit's ability kicks in immediately
and it now becomes a 6D card. Brahma Bull looks to see if the card played
was 4F or less. In this case it is, so Brahma Bull kicks in and reduces
the damage done to 1.
Q: I play Juke N' Jive after Ego Boost - what happens?
A: Well, normally, Juke N' Jive would not be affected since it is a 5F
maneuver. However, Ego Boost causes it to be considered a 0F maneuver (it
takes effect in step 2). So Brahma Bull will effect Juke N' Jive.
Same goes for the suplexes that used Tazz's ability to make them 4F or less - Brahma
Bull will affect them!
Q: But Juke N' Jive does no damage, so what happens?
A: Ah, true, true. But Brahma Bull's other ability is to make the text
blank on a card that it effects. So now Juke N' Jive, which is normally
irreversible, now can be reversed in step 6 (or later). Plus, Juke N' Jive
will not cause the opponent to overturn cards as it states on the card.
Q: Ok, so if Brahma Bull blanks text of 4F or lower cards, then can I
play Falling Fist or Knee Smash without playing a 4D or greater
maneuver beforehand?
A: No, because Brahma Bull does not kick in until step 5 and the
requirement to play a card happens in step 1, way before Brahma Bull even
recognizes the card that is going to be played.
Q: One more Brahma Bull question: what if I have Turn The Match Into A
Pier Six Brawl in the Ring, I'm playing Benoit, and have just Irish Whipped
into a Punch as my 3rd maneuver and you have Defensive Cover and Brahma
Bull out.
A: Well, I go home…no. Looking at the timing sequence, this can easily be
figured out. Pier Six, Benoit's ability, and the Whip bonus all
happen in step 4. So the Punch comes out to a 13D. Then we go to step 5. Brahma
Bull and the Cover kick in. Since these trigger simultaneously, I get
to choose the order of effects. So the Brahma Bull can kick in first to
reduce the Punch to 1D. Then the Cover comes in and makes it 0.
Q: Can I discard Brahma Bull from the Ring with Shake It Off, Drop
Toe Hold, etc?
A: Yes. Brahma Bull is a card in the ring so it can be discarded by these
effects. NOTE: In This Very Ring will not work because it only affects
action cards and Brahma Bull is not an action card.
Q: Onto other cards: Clutch Onto Opponent + Apply Illegal Leverage
- is this legal?
A: Yes. The Leverage copies the effects of the previous card, which in
this case is the Clutch. Also, remember, though, that only a Clean
Break will be able to reverse the Illegal Leverage.
Q: What if I play another Illegal Leverage after the above combo?
A: Same deal. It will have the effect of the Clutch.
Q: What if I slap a Maintain Hold after the above combo?
A: You cannot play a Hold after Clutch + Apply Illegal Leverage.
Illegal Leverage takes the wording of its previous submission and in this
case that's the Clutch. And the Clutch says you can't put a Hold
after it.
Q: Can Clean Break reverse Clutch while overturning? A: No. Clean
Break reverses these cards as it would reverse a Jockeying For Position:
namely, only from the hand. Also, Clean Break will trigger its discard
effect if reversing from the hand and allow you to draw 1 card too. (Same goes
for reversing Half Hour Suplex).
Q: Can Defensive Posture reverse a Clutch Onto Opponent?
A: No. See the Golden Rules section in the General
FAQ.
Q: Can Where Are Your Medals or Censored reverse reversals?
A: In most cases it is no. In the odd case, you can reverse the likes of a Ref
KO'd played after it reverses your Step Aside. To explain: you may
only play a reversal on your opponent's turn, unless is specifies otherwise
(like Ref KO'd and Disqualification). So, if your opponent plays Kick,
you Step Aside, they play Ref KO'd, you may Censor that as
you are playing it on their turn, and thus can legally play a reversal. Medals
and Censored do not allow you to play reversals out of turn.
Q: Can Where Are Your Medals or Censored reverse irreversible
cards?
A: No. Remember the golden rule above.
Q: Can I use a reversal from my Backlash deck to reverse Claw or Dirty
Low Blow?
A: Yes, because reversing from the Backlash deck is not the same as reversing
from the hand, just like playing a card from your Backlash deck is not the same
thing as playing a card from your hand.
Q: How do I play Lita To The Xtreme?
A: After your maneuver of 4D or more is reversed, you discard Lita to
allow you to continue your turn, BUT you must play a High Risk move next or your
turn is over. Lita does not break the chain of effects for this High Risk
move so you can play a Falling Fist if a Samoan Drop was reversed
and you discarded Lita from the Ring.
Q: Can I play a Swanton Bomb after Lita To The Xtreme?
A: No, the Bomb is a Trademark Finisher, not a High Risk maneuver.
Q: Can I discard one card to Half Hour Suplex, then decide to discard
another two, then decide to discard again, etc.?
A: When you play the Half Hour Suplex, you declare how many cards you are
discarding and then discard them: that is the bonus you get.
Q: So if I was Road Dogg with Let's Make Some Noise in the Ring, I could
not discard cards to the Half Hour Suplex, draw, discard them again,
draw, etc.?
A: Correct. You choose how many you cards you discard with the Half Hour
Suplex when you play the Suplex.
Q: If a Busted Wide Open is removed from the Ring, does its effect still
happen?
A: No. Cards that have an effect while in the Ring no longer have that effect
when removed. Inferno Match is another example. See the Golden Rules in
the General FAQ.
Q: Can I use Million Dollar Smile more than once in a turn?
A: Yes. And you can use it in multiple turns as long as it is in the Ring.
Q: Can No Chance In Hell reverse a Mid-match action when played from the
Backlash deck or if a Pre-match event is used as a Mid-match action from the
Ring?
A: No. No Chance only reverse actions played from the hand. Just Bring
It! will be able to reverse such an action if it is not the first action
played by the opponent.
Q: When Premiere WWF Superstar is resolved, where do the cards that go
into the Ringside pile come from?
A: The Arsenal.
Q: Does Put It All On The Line break the chain?
A: No, you can play a High Risk maneuver if the previous successful maneuver
fulfills the requirement needed by the High Risk move.
Q: Con-Chair-To says it cannot be reversed by When You Thought You Had
All The Answers, but WYTYHATA says it can reverse any Finisher, even
those that cannot be reversed. Which wins out?
A: The Con-Chair-To wins out.
Q: If I do not have the Fortitude to reverse a Trademark Finisher, can I use When
You Thought You Had All The Answers... to reverse it?
A: No. WYTYHATA refers to a Finisher not being able to be reversed from a
card effect or from the card itself. It does not kick in if you don't have the
Fortitude to reverse it.
Q: Can you play a Swanton
Bomb after From The Top Rope?
A: No. While you can search for Swanton Bomb after playing From The
Top Rope, it is still considered a Trademark Finisher so you can't ignore
the "Can only be played after" text as specified in the text of Top
Rope.
Q: Are Backlash decks allowed in a tournament?
A: Yes. If for some reason your opponent does not have a Backlash deck, you may
still play yours. What you do in a friendly, non-tournament game is up to the
players involved.
