Q: When
can I use the Superstar Ability? |
| Q: When
I use the Superstar Ability, do I have to use one of the cards I just
drew? A: No, use any card in your hand of your choice. |
| Q: If
I use the Superstar Ability, does it break the chain between a set-up
move and a High Risk maneuver? A: No, Superstar Abilities do not break chains. |
| Q: Does
Lou Thesz Press work if its overturned? And this card as
restrictive as I think it is? A: No, it says it only works if played from hand. And yes, it only reverses a maneuver played after Irish Whip. |
ANALYSIS
|
In The Ring: "Stone Cold" Steve Austin is a vicious assailant, inflicting assault and battery on his victims. Often attacking with unstoppable viciousness, he can adapt to many styles of combat. In The Game: Austin's ability allows him to cycle through his deck faster than most others. By placing a card at the bottom of the deck, he can effectively 'store up' cards needed later, or stock the deck with reversals as self-preservation. Using All Foils/Uniques: While his Trademark Finisher (Stone Cold Stunner) is somewhat standard, Open A Can Of Whoop-A%$ is extremely powerful, allowing an early unblockable move, possibly leading to a chain of them, using Austin Elbow Smash, great for building Fortitude quickly. He has two reversal foil cards, and while Lou Thesz Press is severely limited, Double Digits is very effective for a Strike/Grapple/Submission reversal. Patented Austin Kick To The Gut can be a key card, especially in a Strike-oriented deck, as it aids both card advantage and playing larger maneuvers. The ability to make any card unreversible is always outstanding, so Rattlesnake Rulz is a must-have card if you can acquire it. And That's The Bottom Line is a good Mid-Match reversal, but its requirement for using Cause Stone Cold Said So! makes the latter a very difficult card to use, moreso against low-F control decks or JR Style. Finally, DTA is nice for slipping a key card (a reversal, perhaps?) back into your deck - not to mention a free look at your opponent's hand, good for knowing when to attack - or when to play a possible Heel Turn - or if nothing else, setting the stage for a more powerful use of What???. Using Some/No Foils/Uniques: The Superstar Ability on its own is powerful, even without the other cards; Rattlesnake Rulz, Bottom Line, What??? and DTA are generic enough to use in any deck, and if you don't want Strikes in yours, this isn't a problem taking out Patented Kicks. For most decks, Austin Elbow Smash is worth having, unless keeping your Fortitude low is a focus of the deck, and while most decks will leave out Lou Thesz Press, keep Double Digits around, it's very versatile. Cause Stone Cold Said So is a good card, very strong, but since it is dependent on having Bottom Line in play (perhaps difficult against low-F decks using just Clutch and reversal cards for Fortitude) might make you pass on it. But even control decks can use Open A Can Of Whoop-A%$ to sneak in one good move and establish a Fortitude base to work from. Deck Ideas: Because of the mechanics of Austin's SSA, using Submissions can work well - Maintain a Sleeper or Camel Clutch, and each turn fetch another Maintain Hold from your deck, using your SSA to replace it - effectively drawing 2 cards each turn! You can also emphasize the Strike theme Austin decks lend towards, perhaps setting up an Open A Can/Knee Lift/Clothesline/Busted Wide Open combination. Or you could use the Strike cards to set up From The Top Rope, and add some High Risk in - landing a 13D unreversible Austin Elbow Smash, leading into other High Risk cards could quickly rip a deck apart. Finally, a Stun deck could work very well, allowing Billion Dollar Princess to set up a fatal series of blows with Rattlesnake and Austin Elbow Smash Recommended Stipulations: For Heel decks (No Disqualification Match) or Foreign Object-themed decks (Chicago Street Fight), there are options available - Indian Strap Match might keep JR from preventing Open A Can or Rattlesnake, and Four Corners might give extra space for the What???/DTA combination. Watch Out For: Neckbreaker & Brain Buster can be a minor annoyance to Stone Cold, and cards like Backed By Stephanie McMahon & Daddy's Little Girl might sting a bit due to the large SSV. How I Play: My odd new Austin deck is Face mono-Strike with High Risk, including Flying Clothesline, since you can recycle that card back into your deck as needed. Using several copies of From The Top Rope to get the High Risk cards needed, setting them up with small Strikes like Backhand Slap to reduce the chance of getting reversed before FTTR is played - though the best card to use is Patented Austin Kick, since it gives a discount on whatever High Risk card you play - care to Drive Opponent at 7F? |
