QUESTIONS & RULINGS
| Q: If
I use the Superstar Ability, does it break the chain between a set-up
move and a High Risk maneuver? A: No, Superstar Abilities do not break chains. |
| Q: Do
I need 30F to use Undertaker's Tombstone Piledriver as an
action? And does it do 20D? A: No, and no. The card has been errata'ed - using it as an action costs 0F and does no damage. |
| Q: How
does Rest In Peace work? It sounds like I lose the
game! A: Not on the spot, but you might, unless you win the game instead. Take 6 cards from your deck into your hand, and discard the rest of your deck. If you can defeat your opponent before the end of your turn, you win. Alternately, if you use other actions or maneuvers that return cards back to your deck, you won't lose. |
| Q: ...so
if Inferno Match is in play, and I play Rest In Peace, do
I lose the game? A: Yes. Since you can't turn over a card to meet the condition of Inferno Match, you lose by Pinfall. |
| Q: ...if
all reversals are +20F, does this mean Fortitude Surge can't be
played? A: Fortitude Surge's text allows it to take effect as POD *attempts* to make the Fortitude plunge happen, so yes, F Surge can be played to stop it. |
| Q: Can
I play Turn The Tide/Diversion/Eye Rake to make Throttled
Within An Inch Of Your Life completely unstoppable? A: Throttled cannot be modified by any other card you use, either something you play or a pre-existing condition - so, no. |
| Q: ...what
if The Rock has The Brahma Bull out? A: Throttled cannot be modified by cards in your opponent's Ring either - simply put, it cannot be modified at all. |
| Q: ...so
can Over Sell Maneuver be used, and if so, what happens? A: Throttled's text cannot be modified by Over Sell, so the victim overturns cards as required, takes the full damage regardless of reversals (0D), and may draw 2 cards. |
| Q: ...does
Throttled end your turn? A: If they overturn 2 reversals, they end your turn. If they are reduced to 1 card in their deck, then it is still your turn (unless they overturned a 2nd reversal). |
ANALYSIS
|
In The Ring: The Undertaker's 'Decade of Destruction' has given him enough experience that he can force his tactics on an opponent, even if they've managed to escape his power earlier in the match. In The Game: Once per turn, The Undertaker's Superstar Ability allows him to discard two cards from hand to take one card from his discard pile into his hand. Using All Foils/Uniques: The Trademark Finisher, Undertaker's Tombstone Piledriver fits the standard, but it's additional Action can be invaluable - discard Tombstone to draw 1 card, then use the Superstar Ability to retrieve it later on. Undertaker's Flying Clothesline is an awesome High Risk maneuver, although it can be painful if countered from hand. Undertaker Sits Up! gives a damage booster and a Fortitude plunge for the next turn - possibly creating a game-winning situation! To help build the necessary Fortitude quickly, Rollin' - Rollin' - Rollin'! can quickly give you an edge with an unreversible move you can search for! But while Throttled Within An Inch Of Your Life won't help your Fortitude, it can tear an opponent's deck in half while they struggle for reversals. However, the strongest cards are Rest In Peace, enabling a one-turn win-or-lose situation; and Power Of Darkness, which can create one devastating turn of possibly unreversible attacks - these two used together almost insure a victory. Brothers 'Til The End, the Mid-Match reversal (at 10F for 'Taker), is a strong omni-reversal, especially as a card available on demand. Lastly, the newest card, You Will Respect Me can pick off a key card early on while inflicting early damage, especially if the card overturned is a Superstar Specific foil! Using Some/No Foils/Uniques: As is the trend, playing without the Trademark Finisher is not necessarily a great loss - the Action ability is too minor if you don't intend to use it eventually as a maneuver at some point. If your deck isn't focused on high-Fortitude cards, Undertaker's Chokeslam and Flying Clothesline can likewise be left out, though most all decks should include Rollin', as one small maneuver can set up a larger one easily. However, Undertaker's key foils are Rest In Peace, Power Of Darkness, and more often than not, Undertaker Sits Up! - unless you have a very unusual strategy, keep these three cards in your Arsenal, as they can set you up for a win in one turn! If you can get Throttled, use it - if nothing else, it essentially just throws a portion of your opponent's deck aside, with no set-up or immediate solution, especially if You Will Respect Me (crucial to any Taker deck) has cleared out a key reversal already. Finally, even if you have a low Fortitude deck, Brothers 'Til The End should work for you - only pass it up in rare circumstances. Deck Ideas: With the RIP/POD combo, the Undertaker decks can be obvious in basic ability, but more complex in actual variations, though the current environment means you have to adapt a bit. For example, a Heel deck can give additional reversals to keep Fortitude under 20F, while a Face deck might help give card advantage to fuel the Superstar Ability, as well as using Givin' 'Em High Fives to allow Ability use early on, not to mention the Turn The Tide/Chokeslam combo that can take you within range of Sits Up!. Also, cards like Comeback!, Drop Toe Hold, and other 'removal' cards can bring an opponent's Fortitude down or get rid of that pesky Fortitude Surge. Throttle can be just a good card, or an entire focus, using Comeback! and Armageddon to rip down an opponent's deck looking for reversals. With the Stun Value of the foil maneuvers, a Stun deck can be designed (using cards like Superkick), either with Billion Dollar Princess (perhaps to get POD/RIP or Sits Up! in hand!), You're Not In My League or Seeing Stars - especially since Rollin' is great for getting more cards with Stun into play. High Risk is also a very good option, since you can wait to see if the set-up maneuver goes through before using the Superstar Ability to retrieve a Foot Stomp or Undertaker's Flying Clothesline from the Discard pile. Recommended Stipulations: No Disqualification Match can be good, moreso if playing Heel, if for nothing else than dropping Brothers down to 7F! Indian Strap Match is a possibility - though it will make POD/RIP a little harder to pull off, it will prevent JR from stopping it cold. Hell In A Cell Match could work for 'Taker if he can defend against discards, if Test Of Strength and Rollin' are used properly, but it's risky. Watch Out For: Fortitude Surge can stop the POD/RIP combo cold, so you have to find a way around that. Discard decks can also wreak havoc on Taker - with no cards in hand, his Ability is useless. Big Show can resist heavy Grapple attacks, so remember to stay flexible. Finally, keep in mind that Hell In A Cell Match negates Brothers 'Til The End. How I Play: My Undertaker deck plays Face, daring an opponent to use Heel Turn - this would place key cards in the Discard pile, where the Superstar Ability could easily retrieve them. Running off a mono-Grapple base, it uses a few High Risk cards, trying to quickly build Fortitude for Power Of Darkness or Undertaker Sits Up! to finish them off. Also, using Armageddon WWF Style after Power Of Darkness can insure even a high-Fortitude opponent cannot stop the Dead Man! |
