Charlene Baldridge, Journalist

A member of the San Diego Theatre Critics’ Circle, Charlene Baldridge has been a San Diego resident since 1962. An arts writer for The Daily Californian during the late 1970s, she detoured into arts management for 14 years, then returned to writing about the arts in 1995. 

Baldridge’s award-winning (San Diego Press Club, Society of Professional Journalists) features, criticism and interviews have appeared in American Theatre, Stage Bill, Opera News, Opera Canada, Performing Arts, and Back Stage West. Her award-winning articles and criticism appear regularly in Performances, Riverside Press-Enterprise and La Jolla Village News. 

Other credits include Investor’s Business Daily, Copley News Service, San Diego Magazine, La Jolla Today, San Diego Metropolitan, North County Times, The Reader, Fahrenheit, Senior Life and Alaska Airlines Magazine. 

Baldridge’s survey of the performing arts in Balboa Park is included in the guidebook Discover Balboa Park. She authored San Diego: Jewel of the California Coast (Northland Publishing, 2003), which is currently available in bookstores.

She is also author of the poetry chapbook "Winter Roses." The title poem and one other are incorporated into Jake ("Dead Man Walking") Heggie's orchestrated song cycle, premiered in October 2004 by Frederica von Stade and Camerata Pacifica. The work toured the Los Angeles area in March 2006.
