Announcement from Sunday’s Gainesville Sun

                                 April 10, 2005

Blackie, a domestic short-hair previously residing in the Firman
community near Kelliher, Minnesota, is pleased to announce his
retirement to Gainesville, Florida.

His lifelong specialty has been in elder care companionship and in
mousing.  He may continue mousing on an "as needed" basis (he already has
received an invitation to volunteer at a local church) and is looking forward to
learning the local custom of  catching palmetto bugs.

Although no longer residing in an environment where he feels a need to
prove his feline masculinity, he may direct his creative efforts from hunting to
origami and is considering studying this fine art of paper
manipulation with Laurel (one of his new humans). He has been admiring
some of her work and is fascinated by the outcome although he needs to
further refine his technique for working with teeth and claws on
delicate paper.  After meeting Ary (another of his new humans) he is also
interested in pursuing an alternative career in seafood management and is hoping
that Ary will invite him to the forthcoming "take your cat to work
day" in the Publix supermarket meat department.

Having been an "only cat" for over 4 years and, most recently, living
alone for 5 weeks in an ice cold somewhat flooded house followed by an
1800 mile auto trip, some were concerned for his adjustment to the
different circumstances he would find upon arriving in Florida. Some
were concerned his vocal cords would never recover from THREE days of
SOLID CONTINUOUS use during the journey.  (In fact, some were even
concerned that he might  actually find himself living along Interstate
57 somewhere in the middle of Illinois.)  But once again, he has
proven himself to be incredibly resilient in adjusting to his
circumstances and his new  humans have  once again proven to  themselves

that there is a thin line between responsible behavior toward

companion animals and  complete absolute total lunacy.

(Hint: some believe that "thin line" lies
somewhere along Interstate 57 in the middle of  Illinois)

The feline and canine inhabitants of the Gainesville household:
Patrick, Alberta, Sky, Charlie and Hana join their four humans in extending a
warm welcome to this new Florida resident and invite you to do
likewise. Although his companion humans have a rather heavy
schedule during the next couple of weeks, Blackie is now receiving
guests and would love to hear from you .
