Dear Prospective Member,
Thank you for your interest in the
Daughters of the American Revolution, and for your desire to
learn more about Charles Parish Chapter.
We are a group of 70 women from all walks
of life, ranging in age from 21 to 85. Many of our women work
outside the home, are raising families, or both. Some have
retired; others plan to do so soon.
Because of the diversity of interests
within our organization, we search for programs on a number of
relevant topics in today’s world. Most of our chapter meetings
are on the 4th Tuesday of each month (except for
December and the summer months). However, we plan at least two,
if not three, Saturday meetings to accommodate those who work
during the week.
Our membership draws primarily from
Poquoson and York County in Tidewater Virginia, as well as from
Hampton and Newport News, VA. We also have several out-of-state
members.
Here are some of our activities:
- Each year, Charles Parish Chapter
awards a $750.00 scholarship to a deserving Poquoson High
School student who is going on to college. We raise money
to augment this award by having an annual pot-luck picnic
and auction in May.
- We encourage the young people in our
schools to enter the DAR Good Citizens Contest and the
American History Essay Contest for grades 5-12, sponsored by
the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
- We participate annually in a
naturalization ceremony of 100-150 new American citizens
held at the Federal Court House in Norfolk, VA.
- The retired military and wounded
warriors of past and current conflicts are much on our mind,
and twice a year we collect donations for the Hampton
Veterans Administration Hospital and Landstuhl Medical
Center in Germany where our wounded troops are first taken.
We invite you to join our chapter. E-mail
me your name, address, and phone number, using the link below. I
will contact you with requirements for membership and
application instructions, and keep you informed of upcoming
chapter events. We will assist you in completing the research
necessary to become a member of the Daughters of the American
Revolution. Please contact me at your earliest convenience.
