Hi Friends
Our January CCPC meeting was held at the Major Hillard Library in Deep Creek and I am proud to say that it was one of the largest yet. We had 56 folks sign in. I was unable to attend due to a business engagement in Maryland, and was disappointed in not being present and participating in a great meeting. Madam Vice-President, Madam Secretary, and Madam Treasurer; thank you.
Andrea Palmisano and Jason Clevinger from the Virginia Conflict Resolution Center of Virginia Beach were our guest speakers this month. They gave a very informative presentation on gang awareness with a focus on “at risk youth”, and that relationship to gang membership. They were very thorough in describing behaviors and signs in our youth that we can be watchful for that quite possibly could be a signal that they are heading in the wrong direction. I want to thank Andrea and Jason for a great presentation and a lot of useful information.
To our new neighborhoods who attended our meeting; thanks to, (1) Heather from The Pines of Warrick, (2) Janice, Tracy, Sandy, and Mike from Loxley Gardens, and (3) Bonnie, Mike, and Bobby and a huge group they brought with them from Geneva Shores. Each meeting we are increasing our attendance and participation and I am extremely pleased with that. I have asked, on occasion, that if each of us will bring a friend and/or neighbor to the next meeting, we would not only have the best Council in Hampton Roads, but the largest. With more participation, we can display our enthusiasm to our Mayor and City Council, and therefore justify more support. There is talk that the City is working to cut about 10% of our Public Safety Budget for the upcoming year, and part of that could possibly be by eliminating Police Officer positions and programs. This is a business decision, and the signs of our times. Please understand that we have Crime Prevention Officers, the Crime Prevention Program, and the McGruff Program. Without a voice and a desire for these positions and programs, we are always in danger of losing or reducing them.
One of the biggest articles of new business this meeting was to seek volunteers for a Nominations Committee. The Executive Board has 2 positions that will be vacant in April 2010. Those are the Vice-President and Secretary positions. Ferne O’Hara and Judy Haddock have been and still are the foundation of our Council, but our By-laws state that officers cannot serve more than 2 terms. Please give some thought to who you would want for those seats and let’s get the nomination committee busy on it; as you can note, election time is only a couple of months away. Thanks again friends and I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 7:15 PM, at the Indian River Community Center. Please note the time of 7:15 PM.

God Bless
Phil Durbin
