Discussion

Most details come from daughter Jennie's death certificate. However, her names, both first and surname, are spelled many different ways (table at right). She is listed as Zehna, Jeannie, Jeannette, Jennie, Jane, Janet. On Samuel Sass' death certificate, his mother's name was Jeanette Katzenellenbogin [alternative spellings: KATZENELLENBOGEN, KATZENELENBOGEN, KATZNELBOGEN]. This could be part of the notable Jewish family including Hayyim Löb b. Hirsch Katzenellenbogen and Rabbi Saul Katzenellenbogen, who lived in Wilna in the mid-1800s, although the fact that the 1900 Census says she could not read and write would weigh against her being daughter of an noted educator. Daughter Rose's death certificate does not identify a maiden name for her mother.

Although one census notes Jennie's and her parents' origin as Germany, most sources state it as Russia, with one census noting Russia-Poland.

Sometime after 1900, she remarried. Her obituary in The New York Times on 26 Dec 1917 reads: "FELENSTEIN, (SASS) - Jennie B., beloved mother of Samuel Sass, Mrs. Mary Kauffman, Mrs. Rose Harris, Mrs. Kate Livingston. Funeral from her late residence, 210 Lenox Ave., Wednesday, December 26, 10 A. M. Please omit flowers."
