Despite information collected on hundreds of Higdons in the area, Andrew Francis Higdon's origins are still unknown. He has a brother Joseph (living with him in 1880) and was probably born about 1833. As shown below, his origin is recorded as both in DC and Maryland.

He could be the 15-year old Francis (not Francis L. who appears with Leonard Ferrell and his siblings) shown in the 1850 MD, Charles Co., Bryantown census with George & Teresa Carrico. George Carrico appears in the 1860 census with Catherine Farrall, age 80, possibly related to Mary Ferrall, wife of John Thomas Higdon. Teresa Carrico appears in 1870 about one page before Andrew Francis Higdon; with her Catherine Ferrell is 82. In 1860, George & Teresa Carrico are close to Theophilius Smoot, who is neighbor of A. F. Higdon in 1870. The age for Andrew Francis is right, as is the location, Hughesville (adjacent to Bryantown) in 1870. NOTE: Ignatius French married Susannah Farrall 4 Aug 1818 and Alexander French married Ann Miles 22 Jan 1824 in DC.

Brother Joseph W. Higdon is even harder to find. He appears in the 1880 St. Marys census with Andrew F. The only Joseph in Maryland in 1850 appears to be the one who died in 1852 at age 18. There is a Joseph Higdon, with apparently just a daughter Lydia, living with Lydia Reesides, but this is obviously the same Joseph shown in 1880 again with Lydia in Baltimore.

Andrew Francis Higdon's wives also are confusing. The Beacon announcement shows him married to Elizabeth Ann Thomas in 1852, yet son Lewis' death certificate lists his mother [1856] as Mary Elizabeth, the census lists Mary in 1860 at an age too young to have married in 1852, the census lists Ann E. (Elizabeth Ann?) in 1870, and he clearly remarries in 1880.
