Discussion

Lewis/Louis first wife, Lucy (1880 Census), died 20 Aug 1880. It seems likely that even though he is listed with wife Susan/Susie in the 1899 and 1910 Censuses, that Margaret S. (1920 & 1930 Censuses) is the same. He appears to be listed twice in the 1910 Census, the Washington, DC and the Charles Co., MD surveys being taken at different times. One 1910 entry indicates he has been married twice and has 11 of 13 children surviving, indicating the list above is missing one.

The listing of a Lewis/Louis Higdon in the District of Columbia Censuses for 1850/1860 would likely represent a relation to this Lewis, although the age listed (birth year 1838/1839) would make it unlikely to be either the parent or the person of Lewis Higdon who was born 1855.

Based on the Higdon entries in the DC directories, Lewis moved to stay near his brothers, first appearing in the DC directory in 1912.

HIGDON--On Friday, December 30, 1932, MARGARET S., beloved wife of Lewis A. Higdon and beloved mother of Clyde F., Joseph B., Thomas W., Clayton I., Lee A., and Ambrose Higdon. Mary A. Cooksey, Maude A. Richards, Helen N. Mattingly, Anna M. Christiansen and Lillian Thompson.
Funeral from her late residence, 2209 Channing street northeast, on Monday, January 2, at 8:30 a. m., thence to St. Francis De Sales Church, where mass will be offered at 9 a. m. for the repose of her soul. Relatives and friends are invted. Interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Services by W. W. Chambers Co.
