Discussion

There's considerable uncertainty about the origin of Bridget (Mittie) Storm. Her marriage entry at the Catholic Co-Cathedral in St. Joseph, MO, lists her parents as John Killcannon and A. M. Connolly. Her marriage certificate shows Kilcannon. Co-Cathedral listings for birth of Mark has Concannon, John has Killcannon, Lawrence has Concannon, Louis has Cauncannon, and Elzear has Concannon. Not surprisingly then, her son Mark, in his eighties, remembered her name as Concannon, which is what is listed for his birth entry at the Co-Cathedral.

She appears to arrive in St. Joseph alone in 1874 when she should would have only be about 12, showing up as from Ireland in the city directory [this directory is like a census, showing the number of males & females if more than the listed person]. Then, two years later, Thomas and William Kilcannon both appear in the city directory. Thomas remains but John appears in 1878 and 1879, followed by Thomas only in 1880 and 1881. Mary appears as a domestic starting in 1884. The 1880 Census shows a Thomas Kilcannon family living near to Bridget and her husband in St. Joseph, MO, with the head Thomas and son Thomas both working in a starch factory, similar to the 1876 directory, and the one US born daughter from Indiana. This group's name flips back and forth between Kilcannon and Concannon.

Map of Concannon families in Galway in 1911 census.Kilcannon and Concannon are exceedingly rare names, appearing only 31 (Kilcannon), 4 (Killcannon), and 464 (Concannon) times in the 1880 census. For the 1870 (1860) censuses, there are no Kilcannon, no Killcannon, 2 Kilcanon, and only 63/19 (52/10) Concannon/Concanon households. It is implausible that Bridget should show up in small St. Joseph only two years before other Kilcannons if they were not related. Robert R. Matheson's Special Report on Surnames in Ireland, based on births registered in Ireland in 1890, shows only 18 Concannon (and no Kilcannon), all of whom are in the province of Connaught (see the Ulster Historical Foundations Ancestry Ireland search page). A look at 1870 births shows about 13 in Galway, 10 in Mayo, and 1 each in Roscommon, Westmeath, and Longford. The 1911 Irish census shows 635 Concannon entires: 2 families in Cork, 2 in Dublin plus individual children, over 70 in Galway with enough disparate individuals to total about 585 persons, and 3 to 5 in King's (Offaly) County. For Galway, the Townlands with the largest numbers are along the coast east of Galway including Ballynahown, West Bohoona, Kilroe East (both in Kilannin District Electoral Division), Cartronlahan, Inveran, Spiddal, Derryloughaun East, and Stripe. Another group are in, and north-northwest to east of, Tuam. Kilcannon does not show up, although Kilgannon does infrequently. Mark Storm also indicated that she had been born in Kentucky, her parents had died young, her mother was French, the family had moved to Indiana, and that she had then come to Missouri. There are Concannon families (totaling 11 individuals in the 1870 census) in Kentucky in the latter 1870s, although no Kilcannons show up. Thomas Kilcannon below fits the general outline, although it is hard to fit a Kentucky birth into the timing based on the ages of the other children. Mittie's census entries in 1880 and 1900 both list her birthplace as Kentucky and her parents' birthplace as Ireland for both.
