Discussion

Based on death certificates, Ernestine/Esther and her husband immigrated separately, and she arrived after the birth of Isaac. This could mean that she was Morris' second wife. See discussion of 1860 census below. Per the census information, there is a gap between Issac, born 1858, and Abraham, born no earlier than 1862. Therefore, Morris and Ernestine might have married between 1858 and 1862, inclusive. However, Isaac Michaels' 1912 death certificate lists his mother as Ernestine.

Her first name is variously given as Esther (daughters Annie's and Carrie's marriage certificates, 1884 and 1885 directories, 1875 NY [Hester] and 1880 US census) or Ernestine (her own death certificate, son Isaac's death certificate, 1870 census, 1887 directory).

According the children's marriage information, an H. Rosenberg is associated with the family. This could either be a sibling or niece/nephew of Esther.

• 1869 - the city directory lists an Abraham Levy at 18 Eldridge, the same address as Janet Zass (mother of Mary Sass Kauffman) in 1890.
• 1870 - Manhattan census, 1st District of the 13th Ward (p. 19[37]), Abraham Levy (age 68) and wife Rebecca appear with Ernst Loewenstein (age 27, children Mary and Pauline), all from Prussia.
• 1878 - A. Michaelis & Rosenberg, gents furnishings, 325 Myrtle with R. Rosenberg at same 119 Cumberland address as A. Michaelis
• 1880 - Manhattan census, Meyer Rosenberg is listed as brother-in-law to Sam'l Loewenstein, whose family includes an Emilie, age 14.
• 1888 - The witnesses to Annie Michaels' marriage to George Dressler were E. Lohenstein and H. Rosenberg.
• 1888/9 - Samuel Rosenberg is a witness for the naturalization of Mary Sass Kauffman in 1889, and Abraham Levy is a witness for the naturalization of Mordecai Kauffman in 1888.
• 12 Jan 1893, Brooklyn Eagle, marriage notice for Carrie Michaels and Henry N. Cohen lists Mr. Rosenberg, Julia Rosenberg, and Jacob Rosenberg as guests, in addition to Robert and George Dressler.
