Discussion

Born in Montgomery Co., PA, in 1808, Lewis Ullman was among the two dozen individuals leading the effort to incorporate the borough of Phoenixville in Chester County, PA, in 1849. Although he was referred to as "Colonel Ullman" for reasons yet to be determined, his only military service found has been one of the NCO/Musicians/Privates in Washington Gray Artellerists, served during Philadelphia riots of 1844. In 1848, he applies for (and is denied) a tavern license for the Fountain Inn (farthest western encroachment of British troops during the Revolution; and shown in 1873 map at right adjoining land owned by his wife Ellen) but is more successful from 1852 through 1865 with the centrally located Phoenixville Hotel (shown in map below).
