'Big Walter' Horton
MR CHROMATONIC
"I play the blues from my heart, people; with a soulful, mellow tone"
- from the Rod Piazza song Blues Player
My first real musical instrument was a Hohner Vest Pocket harmonica, given to me by my folks when I was about 5 or 6 years old.
I love the sound of the harmonica because it has such a uniquely expressive character, like the human voice. Maybe that's because it's the only musical instrument you actually breathe (in & out) through. I'm an unashamed and enthusiastic advocate of the Harmonica; I'd like to hear it played more in every genre of music.
Although mostly self-taught, my limited harmonica education has included included one-on-one sessions with master harmonicist Eddie Gordon (Johnny Puelo's Harmonica Gang), Jazz prodigy Bill Barrett, West Coast Blues Master Rod Piazza ("the flame-keeper"), and my mentor, Harmonicist & Educator Roger Gonzales, to name just a few.
For any player or listener who really feels the Blues, you know it's not about flash, or how many notes you can play, or how loud you can play it. It's all about how you feel it, how you swing it, how it moves you.
The heart of blues goes deeper than any ocean. The Blues touches people in ways (and in places) that no other music can.
