The Flying
Leatherneck Aviation Museum and Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar
provided the venue for a June 10, 2008 tour sponsored by our San Diego Retirement Club.
Twenty people toured the new (2006) museum and admired more than 30 vintage aircraft in the
well-planned outdoor area. Several of
our ex-pilots used to fly some of the aircraft and many others had a hand building them
in the old days. It was a special treat to tour the vintage planes in the
company of our Honorary Member John Northrop who really knew historic details of
aircraft on display!
After the museum, we visited facilities of Marine Corps Squadron VMFA(AW)-225 and
its F-18D
aircraft. Presentations by Marine aviation personnel, all Iraq
veterans, made the
tour even more interesting. We were shown up-close views inside cockpit
areas, and a 20 mm gatling gun capable of firing 4000 rounds per minute!
The tour concluded with a delightful dutch-treat lunch at the beautiful enlisted chow hall. We
had a great day at MCAS Miramar!
