Initially the Howland aircraft were powered by the Austrian Rotax engines, but in 1993 the designer selected the German-built Hirth engines as standard for his kits. The standard engine for the H-2 biplane is the 65 horsepower Hirth 2706; for the H-2A, the 85 horsepower Hirth F-30. The H-3 can be fitted with the Hirth 2704, which comes in either 44 or 50 horsepower options, depending on whether single or dual carburetors are installed. Information on Hirth engines is available from the German manufacturer's North American distributor and service center: Recreational Power Engineering at (800) 583-3306 or, online at http://www.recpower.com.
