Casey's obedience career started the day after I brought him home, at the tender age of 9 weeks. He and I are always open to the opportunity to play obedience where ever we go. He lights up every time he gets a chance to show off.

AKC NOVICE: This is the first level. After earning three legs you have your Companion Dog Certificate (CD) title. The exercises consist of: Heel On Leash, Heel Off Leash: This exercise is where the dog walks on your left side. There is a normal, fast and slow pace. Figure 8: This exercise is done in the same manner as the heeling. It is also done on leash in the novice level. You walk around two people in a figure 8. They stand four feet apart. The judge calls out the start and halt to the exercise. This demonstrates close changes of pace. Stand For Exam: You have your dog stand while in the heel position. You then leave the dog on a stay command. Walk out, turn and face your dog. The judge walks over and runs their hand over the dog. This exercise also helps when at the vets office. Recall: You leave your dog on one side of the ring, and walk to the other side. When the judge tells you. You call the dog to you. This exercise demonstrates that the dog will come when called. One Minute Sit Stay, and Three Minute Down Stay: You leave the dog on one side of the ring. Walk across to the other side. Turn and face your dog. You stay there until the judge tells you to return to your dog. This exercise demonstrates that your dog will stay until you say it is ok to move. There is an A class and a B class. The A class is for dogs that have not earned their CD Title. The B class is for dogs that have earned their CD or have earned a High In Trial.
AKC OPEN: This is the second level. In this level you earn your Companion Dog Excellent Certificate (CDX) title. The exercises consist of . Heel Free & Figure 8: This is done the same as the novice level. Expect that they are done off leash. Drop On Recall: This is done in the same manner as the Novice Recall. Expect, at some point the judge will signal you to down your dog. You either tell or signal your dog to down. Then the judge will signal you to call your dog. You tell dog to come. Dog comes and sits in front of you. This exercise demonstrates that your dog will down when ever told to do so. This exercise comes in handy when you need the dog to stop moving in a hurry. Retrieve On The Flat: In this exercise you have a dumbbell that is thrown. With the ok from the judge. You send your dog to pick it up and bring it back to you. Retrieve Over High Jump: This exercise is done in the same manner as the Retrieve On The Flat. Expect that you throw the dumbbell over the jump. After the judge gives you the ok. You send your dog over the jump to retrieve the dumbbell and jump the jump coming back. Broad Jump: This is a jump done with 2 to 4 boards. You stand mid way between the boards, and off to the right side of the jump. You face across the jump. On the judges signal you send the dog over the jump. When the dog is in mid air over the jump. You turn so that you are side by side to the jump. The dog finishes the jumping. And turns and comes to sit in front of you. Three Minute Out Of Site Sit Stay, Five Minute Out Of Site Down Stay: This exercise is done the same way as in the Novice level. Expect that the handler is out of site of the dog. Open A is for dogs that have won their CD title and not won a CDX. Any handler that has earned a OTCH (Obedience Trial Champion) may compete in this class. Open B is for dogs that have won their CD or CDX titles. In this class the judge can mix up the order the exercises will be done.
AKC UTILITY: This is the third level. In this level you earn your Utility Dog Certificate (UD) title. The exercises consist of: Signal Exercise: This is the heeling exercise. There is no voice commands given. You will end up at one end of the ring in the center. There you will leave the dog and go to the other end. Turn and face your dog. At the signal from the judge you will give you dog a signal to down, signal to sit and signal to come sit in front of you. Scent Discrimination Article #1 & Scent Discrimination Article #2: This exercise consists of 10 articles. 5 metal and 5 leather. Each set is numbered 1 to 5. The handler picks the same number from each set. These two articles are placed on a chair. The other eight are randomly set six inches apart. The handler is twenty feet away from the pile. Handler scents article on chair and hands it to the judge. Dog and handler turn and faces the pile. Handler sends dog to find the article. Dog returns with the correct article and sits in front of handler. This is done for both leather and metal article. Directed Jumping: In this exercise you have a high jump and a bar jump. They are set in the middle of the ring, apart from each other. You and the dog are at one end of the ring between the jumps. You send the dog across the ring between the jumps. At approximately 10 feet past the jumps. You tell the dog to sit. The dog turns and sits facing you. The judge tells you which jump to send your dog over. Directed Retrieve: This exercise takes three cotton work gloves. The gloves are placed across the ring. One three feet from the corner and the other three feet from the other corner. The third is in the middle of the other two. You stand mid way between the jumps with your back to the gloves as they are being placed. On the judges command you turn and send your dog to the glove that the judge has called. Dog returns to you with the glove. Moving Stand and Examination: This is a heeling exercise that ends up with you leaving your dog on a stand. You continue to the other side of the ring and face the dog. The judge walks up and examines your dog. Your dog should accept this without shyness. When judge is done, you tell dog to heel. Dog returns to heel position. Utility A class is for dogs that have earned their CDX. Utility B class is for dogs that have earned their CDX and UD title. In this class the judge can mix up the order exercises will be done.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AKC AND UKC OBEDIENCE?
UKC NOVICE: Recall: In this exercise you put the dog on one side of the jump and you walk around to the other side. There is a person standing on each side of the jump, about 2 feet away from the jump standards. The jump is set to dogs shoulder height. You turn and face your dog. On judges command you call your dog to come. The dog comes straight to you going over the jump.
Honor Down: The Honor Down replaces the Group Down in AKC. In this exercise the dog and handler are placed in a spot designated by the judge. On command from the judge the handler downs the dog and walks across the ring. And faces his dog. While dog and handler are doing the Down, there is another dog and handler team doing their Heel On Leash and Figure 8. Novice has three divisions. Division A is for dogs that have not earned their Companion Dog Title, or it's equivalent from another registry. Any handler that has not handled a dog to a Companion Dog Title or it's equivalent from another registry. Division B is for any exhibitor. Any dog has not earned a Companion Dog Title. But has earned the equivalent from another registry. Any dog that has not earned it's title from UKC or any other registry. Division C is for any exhibitor. Any dog that has earned a Companion Dog Title or higher.
UKC OPEN: Heel Off Leash: The difference is that, there is a steward walking on the inside path of the heeling pattern. They are walking towards dog and handler. This is to demonstrate that the dog can handle the distraction. Drop On Recall: The steward walks towards the dog after he has dropped. The steward goes to the other side of the ring. This is also an exercise that demonstrates being able to handle distractions. Honor Down: Is done the same a in Novice. Expect that the handler is out of site of the dog.
UKC UTILITY: Directed Marked Retrieve: This is the Glove exercise that is done in AKC. In this exercise dog and handler are standing at one end of the ring. The gloves are placed left side center, right side center and across ring in the center. On command from the judge the handler marks the glove and sends the dog to retrieve it. Directed Signal Retrieve: This is similar to the Go Out exercise in ACK . Expect that you send the dog and stop at a spot in the ring that the judges decides on. You then send your dog to the glove that the judge tells you. The dog retrieves it and returns back to the handler. Consecutive Recall: The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate that dog can promptly respond to two consecutive recalls. One with a drop and one without. The dog should not anticipate the handlers command. UKC Open and Utility have Division A and B. They are the same as in Novice.
