2009 Clean Ocean Access Water Testing

Background Information:
Clean Ocean Access started testing the water
quality in Newport and Middletown in the fall of 2006 as part of a long term
goal of permanent clean water along the Aquidneck Island Shoreline. In order to
achieve this goal we need to change current policy decisions that designate
Rhode Island Beaches as 3-month summer beaches and closed the rest of the time.
So, our 2006 and 2007 program tested to bring public awareness to the water
pollution issues and also to show that people use the ocean all year long
for a wide variety of activities. You can see our results on the past events
page from the main link. Our 2008 Program tested each week in the Newport
Harbor, Newport Beaches and the Rocky coastline of Middletown. The goal of
the current program is to establish baseline water quality at seven popular
swimming locations that are not considered “designated swimming areas”. Our
2009 program is similar to 2008 however we expand our footprint into Source
regions such as the Newport Moat and Middletown Esplanade.
