As a parent or player, why participate in travel soccer and what do you hope to achieve?

020 CYA Comets vs Super Striker 03-22-09.jpgThe Comets believe that winning is an important measure of success, but not the only one.  Soccer is a game and should be fun!  It also should teach teamwork, character and sportsmanship.  It should promote fitness, reward effort and build lasting friendships.  Travel soccer at the U13 level should develop skills for highly competitive players, enabling them to fulfill their emerging athletic potential.  It should encourage creativity while offering a foundation of technical, tactical and fitness training.  We believe that winning and these objectives are mutually supportive and want our team to be a positive experience from which our players draw strength for years to come.

The Comets have transitioned from a program centered on development to one with a shared focus on development an a higher level of competitive play.  The Comets White and Purple aim to compete well and advance in WAGS, the Virginia State Cup, and to become a top program in Northern Virginia.

We want skilled, motivated players and good team chemistry -- an environment that demands full effort yet avoids a high-pressure win-at-all-costs attitude that burns players out just as they're maturing physically.  Our program aims to give players access to outstanding coaches, to enable them to mature and develop in all aspects of the game, and to to enjoy the experience of competitive sport.

Beyond the fun and trophies, there are bigger reasons we hope that our players will stay with the game through their teens and through college.  Studies show that women athletes have higher academic scores in high school than non-athletes, are less likely to smoke or become pregnant as teens, graduate college at much higher rates than women in general, may have lower incidence of osteoporosis and breast cancer, and enjoy higher levels of self-esteem.  In sum, a positive sports environment helps our daughters be strong, successful, confident, happy and healthy.  In our pursuit of victory on the field, we remember this form of winning as well.

If your daughter would like to practice with the Comets, please contact Todd Hamlin through the information on our Contacts page.
