BY THIS AXE I RULE! CONAN AND THE BATTLE FOR THE LEGACY OF ROBERT E. HOWARD
by Tom Stewart; Cover by Joe Jusko
This book explores what happened to Conan and Howard's work and legacy after the death of Howard.
A 9 x 12 inch, all color 208 page art book detailing the history of Robert E. Howard and his Barbarian Conan through all of the various trials and tribulations of the character; through court battles, different publishers, in comic books and in the movies, up to the present. This all color, profusely illustrated pop culture history is a must for fans of the great Pulp Magazines and of the history of 20th century adventure/fantasy literature.

This book covers the fight for the legacy of Howard, who would own Howard's work and who would profit by divorcing the Texas writer from his most famous creation. Lots of backroom deals, backstabbing, and poorly printed fanzines.

Paperback: $29.99
Hardcover: $49.99

Explosive with art, graphics, and photos, the package incorporates illustrated chapters of compelling autobiographical stories, historic documentation, and revealing analytical insights about comics’ most controversial artist-writer-performer, the man who has inspired generations of creators, from Jack Kirby to Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist Michael Chabon. Steranko is annotated by the artist and J. David Spurlock, and includes a classic collaboration with legendary author Harlan Ellison.

STERANKO is the largest and most comprehensive collection of the famed graphic innovator's work since the 2002 instant-sell-out Steranko: Art Noir, and is packed with new and rare art, spanning the full range of  his career—from comics to book covers, film production illustrations to movie posters—many never before published or compiled in book form.

As a musician, art  director, magician, photographer, fire-eater, designer, escape artist, filmmaker, pop-culture lecturer, and publisher, Steranko has cut a  ferocious path through the entertainment arts. The innovations he  created as artist-writer on Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America, and X-Men titles revolutionized the comics form and, as an illustrator, he produced a multitude of paintings, including 30 Shadow book covers.

He has shown his work at more than 200 exhibitions worldwide, including the Louvre, and his original art has sold at major auction houses in the $10-30,000 range. His two volumes of THE HISTORY OF COMICS have sold more than 100,000 copies and as the editor-publisher of the international newsstand entertainment magazine PREVUE, he conducted hundreds of superstar interviews and penned more than three million words. The beast was powerful, incredibly so, for he suspended the Spider in midair and shook him like a child’s rattle. Then he twisted, and hurled the Spider. Helpless, grasping consciousness by silken webs, Wentworth’s back crashed into the low marble railing running along the balcony. Momentum carried him over the railing and hurtling towards death upon the theater floor twenty feet below…

Del Rey: EL BORAK AND OTHER DESERT ADVENTURES
By Robert E. Howard

Editor Rusty Burke previously announced the contents for the book that collects all of Howard's professional series desert adventures:

Francis X. Gordon ("El Borak"):
"Swords of the Hills" (REH's title for the story later published as "The Lost Valley of Iskander")
"The Daughter of Erlik Khan"
"Blood of the Gods"
"Sons of the Hawk" (REH's title for the story later published as "The Country of the Knife")
"Son of the White Wolf"
"Hawk of the Hills"
"Three-Bladed Doom" -  both versions: "long" and "short"

Kirby O'Donnell:
"Gold from Tartary" (published as "The Treasures of Tartary")
"Swords of Shahrazar"
"The Trail of the Blood Stained God"

Steve Clarney:
"The Fire of Asshurbanipal" (straight adventure version)

A slight change from previous books is letting more than one artist illustrate the book. Having depicted El Borak in vivid color in the REH art calendar a few years back, Jim & Ruth Keegan will be painting all color illustrations in the book, as well as art directing the project. All b/w illustrations will be made by Tim Bradstreet. Bradstreet is known for his distinctive style, once described by himself as 'stylistic photorealism' as his work combines the use of posed photography with pencils, inks and coloring. He is well-known for his comic book covers for The Punisher (Marvel) and Hellblazer (Vertigo/DC) and has also worked in movie projects, such as visual design for Blade 2 and poster art for the movie The Punisher.
Jim and Ruth Keegan's El Borak is shown at the right.

Howard also wrote numerous El Borak stories and fragments when he was very young.
These will be collected in a companion volume to be published by The Robert E. Howard Foundation.

Harold Lamb: Swords from the Sea
Edited by Howard Andrew Jones with an Introduction by S. M. Stirling

Vikings, pirates, heroes, rogues, and explorers . . . all have heard the siren call of the sea, and master storyteller Harold Lamb chronicled some of their most daring exploits. This single volume contains all of Lamb’s historical seafaring stories, drawn from rare and fragile pulp magazines. Never before collected, these short stories and novels are a treasure trove of adventure. Best known for his stirring tales of Cossacks and crusaders, Lamb was no stranger to swashbuckling, and his sea stories deliver it in buckets.

Sail with John Paul Jones as he fights to save the crippled Russian fleet from the Turks, one eye always alert for the knives of his czarist rivals. Venture across the desert with a lone American on a desperate venture against the Barbary corsairs. Seek the Northeast Passage, beset by ice, storms, and traitors from within, at the side of explorer Ralph Thorne. Ride the whale road with the Vikings, plying their swords from Iceland to Byzantium. Introduced by best-selling author S. M. Stirling, this volume concludes with a rare behind-the-scenes look at Harold Lamb’s writing secrets, penned by the editor who made him famous.

Harold Lamb: Swords from the East
Edited by Howard Andrew Jones with an Introduction by James Enge

Their conquest was measured not in miles but in degrees of longitude. They smashed the gates of empires, overthrew kingdoms, diverted rivers, and depopulated entire countries. They were the Mongols of Genghis Khan, swift and merciless, but also resourceful, bold, and cunning. Their tale has seldom been told in the West, and never by an author with the acumen of Harold Lamb.

Ride with young Temujin as he outwits schemers and assassins and rises to conquer Asia as Genghis Khan. Venture to the land beneath the northern lights on a mission of vengeance with Maak the Buriat. Stand with Aruk the gatekeeper and Hugo the Frank as they hold the pass against the Sungar hordes. Lamb’s action-packed Mongolian stories, available here in one complete volume, restore the Mongols to their place in history, portraying them not as mindless barbarians but as men of honor and bravery who laid down their lives for their leader and their lands.

F. Paul Wilson: FATAL ERROR
Munir Habib’s life has become a nightmare. His American wife and son have been taken hostage and he must perform cruel acts of self-debasement to keep them alive.  His tormentor, who seems to want nothing more than to humiliate him, has warned him not to report the kidnapping or his family will pay a terrible price.  But a friend realizes something is terribly wrong and tells him he doesn’t have to go to the cops.  There’s this guy who hires out to fix situations like this.

A guy known as Repairman Jack . . .

In his penultimate adventure, Jack is backed into helping Munir despite his ongoing involvement in the cosmic shadow war between the Ally and the Otherness.  Or perhaps because of it.  His nature is proactive, and he’s chafing at being forced into the defensive role of protecting the Lady.  His instincts tell him to bring the fight to the enemy.

And then there’s Dawn Pickering and her strange pregnancy that’s lasting too long.  She finally goes into labor and delivers…what?  She catches a glimpse of the baby as it’s whisked away and is terrified by what she sees. Later she’s told the baby died of birth defects, but she doesn’t believe it.  Neither does Jack.  Neither does Weezy.

And then there’s the Septimus Order and the Kickers, seemingly working in concert to bring down the Internet.  If they succeed, it will extinguish the Lady and open the way for the Otherness to take over our reality.

The threads from past novels join these events to weave a dark tapestry that spells doom for humanity.

DETOUR TO OTHERNESS by Henry Kuttner & C.L. Moore

Introduction by Robert Silverberg; Afterword by Frederik Pohl; Cover art by Richard Powers

In 1961, Ballantine Books published BYPASS TO OTHERNESS, a paperback collection of some of Henry Kuttner's (and C. L. Moore's) best short stories.  Several selections were drawn from Kuttner's popular series such as the "Hogbens" (comedic otherworldly hillbillies living in America), "Gallagher Galloway" (scientist who invents technical marvels /only/ when intoxicated),  and the "Baldies" stories eventually collected in /Mutants.  BYPASS was projected as the first of *three* "Otherness" collections of Kuttner's short fiction.  RETURN TO OTHERNESS followed in 1962 with 8 more stories.  And then . . . nothing.  The third "Otherness" collection never appeared.  Now, almost fifty years later, Haffner Press announces DETOUR TO OTHERNESS: a massive hardcover assembling the contents of both BYPASS TO OTHERNESS and RETURN TO OTHERNESS, and adding 8 additional stories selected for their scarcity, quality, and sheer entertainment value.  Grand Masters Robert Silverberg and Frederik Pohl provide introductory and afterword materials to the book, and the whole affair is decorated with an unpublished painting by Richard Powers.

Foreword by Robert Silverberg; Cover art by Hubert Rogers
500+ pages, $40.00
Archival-quality smythe-sewn hardcover

The ambitious program to collect the short fiction of Grand Master Jack Williamson continues! The 15 tales in this penultimate volume cover Williamson's entry into the US Army in 1942 through to his very successful effort to integrate into the post-WWII science fiction market.

Featured is the 1948 3-part serial ". . . And Searching Mind," which Williamson re-wrote into his most famous work, The Humanoids. Other classics in this volume include the first "Humanoids" story, "With Folded Hands . . ."; "Breakdown," set in the same universe as his novel co-authored with James Gunn, Star Bridge; and his much-reprinted classic, "The Equalizer." Appearing in either book-form or hardcover for the first time are "Cold Front Coming," "Hocus-Pocus Universe," "The Hitch-Hiker's Package," and "You Can't Beat a Marine." Also included is Williamson's afterword with his recollections on the genesis of these tales and the World War II-era science fiction field.

As with previous volumes in this series, the full-color endpapers reproduce the original magazine covers (with artwork by pulp masters including Hubert Rogers, Earle K. Bergey and Frank R. Paul) of the stories herein, and the binding is designed to match the 1940s editions of Williamson's works published by Fantasy Press. The book is smythe-sewn, bound in full cloth, and printed on acid-neutral paper, with full-color endpapers reproducing the original pulp magazine cover art.

With a foreword by legendary author, editor, and long-time friend of Williamson (and fellow Science Fiction Grand Master), Robert Silverberg, With Folded Hands . . . And Searching Mind represents the changing state of mid-20th Century American Science Fiction and continues the documentation of Williamson's unparalleled career.

McFarland: Radio Crime Fighters by Jim Cox
In the early days of radio, producers, directors and scriptwriters were well aware of the listening public’s fascination with subject matter that was tinged with almost any form of wrongdoing. Stories that compared right and wrong, portrayed crime and punishment, and showed the characters upholding law and order kept audiences of every age hooked on this type of program for more than thirty years.

This work covers over 300 syndicated radio mystery and adventure serials that aired in the early or middle twentieth century. To be included in the book, a series must have included one or more characters who regularly appeared in occupations or avocations that fought against espionage, theft, murder, and other criminal activities. Each entry includes the name of the series, air dates (stations and times are noted), the sponsor, extant episodes, cast information (such as the directors, writers, composers, announcers, lead actors and supporting actors), and a brief synopsis.

RED TIDE
Written and art by Jim Steranko.

After emerging as Marvel Comics' most controversial superstar, Jim Steranko tackled his greatest artistic challenge: creating an entirely new medium, the visual novel‹not an illustrated novel or novel-length comic book, but a seamless fusion of interdependent graphic and prose narratives forming a powerful and original new method of telling stories. An artistic tour-de-force, Red Tide is hard-boiled detective fiction in the bare-knuckle tradition of Hammett, Cain, and Chandler, as well as the dark, atmospheric milieu of film noir. Dark Horse is proud to reintroduce this landmark work, remastered with state-of-the-art digital colors by Dave Stewart, in a collector's quality hardcover edition.
