Ain't It Cool News is reporting that Shane Black is going to be writing a script for DOC SAVAGE, which Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who recently wrote the new Star Trek and both Transformers movies) are producing. The announcement states that Doc will not be separated from the 1930s, will include the Fabulous Five, and the film will be an original Doc Savage story that attempts to encapsulate the feeling of the whole collection of Lester Dent's work. | John Hart R. I. P. John Hart (1917-2009), the man known as the “other” Lone Ranger, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2009 with his family at his side. His long career in films began in the Cecil B DeMille production of The Bucaneer in 1938. Playing bit parts until his enlistment in the War in 1941, he returned to Hollywood and won the role of Jack Armstrong in 1947 for Jack Armstrong: The All-American Boy . The departure of Clayton Moore from the Lone Ranger TV series led to his being cast in 1953 as the Masked Man for 54 episodes. With the return of Moore, he continued to act on television in the highly popular Hawkeye and The Last of the Mohicans with Lon Chaney. A 1955 Columbia serial cast him as Captain Africa , which originally was written as a Phantom project. He continued to act until 1982, with his last two appearances as the Lone Ranger on Happy Days and The Greatest American Superhero. Behind the scenes he worked on QuincyM.E. (which starred Jack Klugman), and produced educational films. The last years of his life were spent in Rosarita, New Mexico overlooking the beach he surfed as a young man. In addition to his wife of 52 years, Beryl, Hart is survived by his daughter, Robyn Proiette. While the theme may be Doc Savages single-action six-shooter toteing cousins anniversary, the emphasis will be on expanding our Doc Savage knowledge base. In Rob Smalleys own words: In a way I think we returned to our roots at Doc Con 11 thanks to those that provided us insights into people and history relating to the Doc Savage era and publishing realm. All week I've been saying to myself, "that's what you would do at a Doc Savage Conference". I thought it was great and made this year's Con unique from all others. | Ed Valigursky R.I.P. Ed Valigursky died of heart failure September 7 at his home in Cape Coral, Fla. He was 82. Ed worked as an art director and cover artist for science fiction and fantasy magazines, including Amazing Stories, IF and Fantastic Adventures. He also illustrated covers for novels by such authors as Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury, and became known for including robots and machines of his own design in his paintings. Ed had always been an aviation buff and soon his work began focusing on military and historical illustration. He became a cover artist for Bantam Books, Ballantine Books, Time-Life and other major publishers. In the 1970s and 1980s, Popular Mechanics magazine hired him to produce several dozen covers.
