A process of formal origin, diagram analysis, & computer modeling to design architectural space |
8 week project, Fall 1997, University of Arizona |
This was probably one of the most intensive design course that I took at the University of Arizona. Although the computer was used as a tool of study, it was not the focus of the studio. This project used many different forms of study to design architecture, including diagram analysis, drafting, concept modeling, and presentation modeling using both physical and computer models. The original analysis was to diagram movement in space. The approach I started with was to use an over exposure of a woman dancing. |

The stillness of the photo was inspirational to the design. If architecture is "frozen music" then capturing the life of the photo is where a link between movement and and the space could combine. The graphical diagram of the image was abstract, but still captured elements found in the original image. A 3d forms started to develop from the studies. This process of mapping was used as the conceptual diagrams for the development of form. |

The next step in the processes was to design a conceptual model of the drawing. The forms needed to stay intact, but no longer remain as just forms unto themselves. If a piece was floating then how was it structured. The feeling of each object in the plan may not be just a simple opaque wall, but perhaps a piece of chain link or reflected glass. Even though physical reality was applied to the shape, it still had to retain as much of the diagrams as possible |

For the third part of the process, the design had to make architecture. The space had to have some link to the original movement study. We only move through space, architecture is about designing that space. Because the original photo was from a woman dancing, a dance club was chosen to become the building type. the original images felt organic in nature. The deign acted like a parasite to an existing dance club and kind of infested it. the space would be created by the collision of these two places at one time. |
