Reflections from the Minister's Mind
Rev. John Poleski

Welcome home to the San Diego Center for Spiritual Living. Thank you for reading our re-designed HIGHER VIEWS Newsletter.

Last month, our Founding Minister Rev. Gordon Bishop "passed the torch" to me as your new Senior Minister with the sacred responsibility of sharing the Science of Mind principles as we grow and prosper our beloved church center. It is my great joy and pleasure to report that together we are demonstrating a healthy and vibrant congregation that is making a difference in the Downtown/East Village neighborhood.

As we enter our 7th year, our spiritual family is expanding in both personal consciousness and community awareness. In this current May/June issue, you will sense a collective feeling of dedication and purpose within our classes, workshops and special events, as well as our Sunday morning meditation and service. If you haven't visited us in a while or are new to our teaching, I invite you to join us in our newly-arranged Sanctuary in the Lecture Hall located within the NewSchool of Architecture Building in the Heart of Downtown.

Let us know how we can serve you in supporting your spiritual dreams, goals and desires.

Namaste,

Rev. John Poleski
Senior Minister

Celebrating Mothers and Fathers

We celebrate Mother's Day on May 13th and Father's Day on June 17th. If you are a parent, or if you apparently had a parent, join us on these dates to explore the feminine and masculine nature of the God Presence in all. Those who crawled out from under rocks are also welcome.

Being Noble
Noble Benning
President of the Board

Hello Everyone,
Let me begin by stating it is both an honor and a pleasure to serve as your Board President. As noted above, the title of this article is "Being Noble." The context in which I am speaking is in reference to our actions or behaviors that demonstrate how we express our nobility. The American Heritage Dictionary defines noble as - having or showing qualities of high moral character, such as courage, generosity, or honor: a noble spirit.

As practitioners of Religious Science we know all in the universe are spiritual beings on our own individualized spiritual journey. Morals relate to how we express our understanding of right and wrong in the spiritual connotation. Being noble should strengthen and guide us to commune with the One Spirit we call God that flows through all creation. As I think about elevated character in the context of being non-judgmental, it is all relative to where you are in your spiritual journey. Just as I acknowledge I Am God's work in progress, this is true for all others I encounter whether they are aware of it or not. Just as we seek to find the God in us, we must seek to find the God in others. It has been my joyous pleasure to discover that what I seek I usually find! As we live life in nobility let us be mindful of how we honor and love one another. God is with us all the time to the degree that we choose to believe, which becomes knowingness. This may appear to be a bold statement to some; but, if one believes God flows through all creation then there is no reason to fear anyone. God has protected me all my life and as I honor and share that universal wisdom, "the Consciousness of God," that nobility flows through me, as me; Spirit will guide me wherever I need to be. Being noble is sharing your love and kindness with the whole world.

Everyone is endowed with unique gifts that are on loan to us. Give freely what you can while expecting nothing in return. I have shared this with many people, "YOU CAN NOT GIVE WITHOUT RECEIVING" because there is joy in giving whatever and however it is appropriate for you. Being noble is having the courage to move through any challenge that life brings to you with faith knowing that God is in the midst of it all. Being noble is the embodiment of how you walk it and talk it as the demonstration of your God Truth. You never know who needs to feel the vibration of your nobility. God uses us as instruments of love, peace and joy to bring unity to this world. I challenge us all to stand up and BE NOBLE. ~ Namaste

"Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life."
(Joseph Addison, English Statesman, 1672-1719)

Ernest Holmes, Emmet Fox, Thomas Troward, Raymond Charles Barker... These are just a few of the authors you'll find in the Spiritual Living Bookstore. Have you allowed these philosophers to share their spiritual thoughts with you? Have you opened your heart and mind to the ideas of these great thinkers? We are fortunate that so many teachers have put pen to paper so that we may benefit from their wisdom. I invite you to take time each Sunday to view the books we have available to aid in your personal growth. If there's a book you want and you don't see it, let me know. This is your bookstore, and we will be happy to get that book for you.

Reaching Out To Our Community
Ken Casey
Outreach Coordinator

The San Diego Center for Spiritual Living continues to reach out to organizations in our community who are making a difference in people's lives and in our world.  We conducted a very successful "Needs Drive" for the YWCA in March in support of the Cortez Hill Family Center.  We thank all those who contributed items from the "Cortez Hill Families' List of Needs" to this great program. We received a precious letter of thanks on behalf of the families at Cortez Hill who are appreciating our efforts and having some of their individual and collective Needs met.

Currently we are conducting a book collection drive in support of an organization with whom our San Diego Center for Spiritual Living has a long and rich history: The I AM Foundation. All the gifts of books by best-selling authors we give to first-time visitors to our Center are courtesy of Steve Viglione, Founder of The I AM Foundation. The I AM Foundation's Million Books for Kids Campaign is donating inspirational, affirmative books to schools, libraries and homes of children throughout our community and world. You can help this campaign by donating any new or slightly used inspiring books. You can also learn more about the I AM Foundation and the great work they are doing by going to www.IAMFoundation.org.

Looking forward to June/July, we will be volunteering our time and treasure to work with Stand Down presented by the Department of Veteran Affairs to provide services to homeless Veterans of our U.S. Armed Forces. The San Diego Stand Down is July 13-15, 2007. Stay tuned for further event details and information on how you can help.

Practitioner Pillars
Constance Cook-Core, RScP
Holmes Institute Ministerial Student

Having been a Practitioner for five years, I find that the goals and plans I presented in the last term of my practitioner studies are alive and flourishing.  On Tuesdays, I am teaching Professional Practitioner Studies, Year II - commonly known as Prac II - and as I was reviewing paperwork to give my class additional study guides, I came across my own Prac II final presentation. The assignment was to prepare a presentation on what our personal ministry as practitioners would be. Mine was "Teaching Ministry."

In my Teaching Ministry presentation, I identified prerequisites to success including classroom space and long-term educational planning. Last fall, SDCSL graduated from having classes in student homes to renting space in the downtown area near our Center. Our bright, cheery classroom is in the historic Spreckels Theatre Building. As part of my ministerial internship, I am developing an Educational Program Plan for our Center, complete with job descriptions and task procedures. I'm bearing fruit.

I cherish the time with our students as we explore the principles and philosophy of our "teaching."  The Certificated Science of Mind curriculum affords such wonderful opportunities for the students to experience personal illumination and growth in their consciousness and, as they continue their practices, in every area of their precious lives. With every class, I learn even more about our teaching as I delve deep within to answer questions that are posed in class. Ernest Holmes tells us, "True teaching liberates the student from his teacher." This is the truth of my heart.  ~ Namaste.
