Reflections from the Minister's Mind
Rev. John Poleski
Welcome Home!
As your newly installed Senior Minister, I am thrilled to witness our continued growth and to be an active participant with all of you in creating and nurturing our spiritual family.
The San Diego Center for Spiritual Living is a safe and supportive environment in which all of us can learn and apply the principles of our Science of Mind philosophy.
Our themes for November and December are Abundance and Illumination. John Randolph Price blends both of these concepts beautifully in his 40-Day Prosperity Plan when he writes:
"I am conscious of the Inner Presence as my Lavish Abundance. I am conscious of the constant activity of this Mind of Infinite Prosperity. Therefore my consciousness is filled with the Light of Truth"
I invite you to join us this holiday season as we demonstrate together that God is our Source which radiates Unlimited Supply and Infinite Good.
Namaste,
Rev. John Poleski
Senior Minister |

Celebrating Children
We have been holding the consciousness for Children's Church. Now, it is here and we are excited to welcome the children of our families to their own space with child-size furniture. Little table and brightly colored chairs, including a cowboy-themed upholstered rocker beckon these smiling faces to activities in alignment with the lesson for the week - but with a simpler presentation. Come play and learn with us!

Infinite Abundance
Zoey Flint
Abundant Living Student
At the time of my arrival at Qualcomm Stadium very early Monday morning, there were many evacuees and a handful (and I mean a handful) of volunteers in one concession stand trying to feed an abundance of people. The only thing I had an abudance of was energy. As I looked around, I saw what seemed an impossible job to provide for the volumes of people coming in to the stadium. I remember an older lady coming up to me, carrying what looked like a small beer cooler. It was actually filled with coffee she had made at home and carried over to donate. She handed me the cooler, a container of cream and sugar and said she was walking home to make more, and what else did we need? My finite mind still saw how much we did not have. In no time at all, there was an enormous supply of coffee, water, fruit, snacks, milk, sugar, cereal. Then came the bread and sodas and items for sandwiches, and Qualcom began to look like a grocery store had been emptied into it. I was so busy, but every time I looked up there was an abundance of something else. Clothes, toys and games for children and volunteers to meet every need. Someone asked me and another volunteer to create a Message Center. Neither one of us had a clue as to what to do, but we put one together so quickly it was as if it was something we did everyday. Whatever we needed, people jumped in to help us. Then one of the cell phone companies saw what we were doing and set up shop next to us. So then there were an abudance of phones for everyone to make calls to family and friends.
I connected early on with another volunteer and we decided to go to the medical area, not realizing it would become our home for the next four days. At that time, it was pretty much empty space, but there were many doctors and medical personnel on hand to help anyone who needed medical attention. Medical supplies were coming in, but the doctors were unable to find thermometers. I began to search and discovered there was only one digital thermometer, and it consistently read all temperatures as l88.8 degrees. I called my boyfriend and asked if he could go pick up thermometers. A short time later, one of the doctors held up a bag for me to see. It was filled with an abundance of thermometers donated by my boyfriend. Everyone cheered.
Eventually, there was an abundance of evacuees from several nursing homes coming in, many of them in all phases of senior life. Some walked, some were carried, some so medicated they slept through the chaos and clamor going on around them. But there was an abundance of appreciation coming from these seniors. A funny moment for my volunteer partner and myself occurred when we became lost walker detectives. It seems some of the seniors lost their walkers and ended up with someone else's walker. We laughed the whole time we unraveled the mystery of the lost walkers. What struck me was the great bonhomie of these seniors and accompanying staff during this mass exit from their own safe haven to this temporary concrete home. We set up the first delivery of cots, I think there were only l00 of them, but we remade those empty Charger club rooms into a comfortable place for the many who stayed there. Each room had an abundance of food and drinks that was stocked constantly by local businesses and residents as well. I hope I have been able to convey the enormous abundance I witnessed first hand, and am so proud to have been a part of. Under the worst of circumstances, my mind became conscious of the infinite abundance around us. | |

SDCSL - The Next Generation
The sacred ceremony in which the new generation of leadership of San Diego Center for Spiritual Living was installed and presented to the New Thought Community took place on Sunday, September 9, 2007. Master of Ceremonies Rev. Roger Juline deftly guided the schedule of presenters, musicians, and honorees in an afternoon of joy and celebration. The historic ministerial procession included a cadre of Religious Science ministers licensed with United Centers for Spiritual Living, Religious Science International, Affiliated New Thought Network, and independent ministries - all there to honor Rev. John Poleski's open-hearted inclusive involvement over many years with New Thought leadership and the San Diego League of Practitioners.
Following the processional, Board President Noble Benning welcomed guests with a recounting of the commitment he, Rev. John, and Connie made at the 2005 Annual Gathering to do whatever was necessary to grow a healthy spiritual community in downtown San Diego. Rev. John's wife Constance Cook-Core, RScP, performed the Invocation and turned the event over to Rev. Roger Juline for an introduction of the ceremonies. The first presentation was an inspirational reading from Ernest Holmes' final conclusion on page 423 of the Science of Mind textbook delivered by Dr. Ruth Hobson of the New Thought Center for Creative Living in San Diego. Dr. Hobson is also Director of Education and Dean of the San Diego Campus of Emerson Theological Institute, Rev. John's alma mater. Founding Minister Rev. Dr. Gordon Bishop gave personal comments honoring his and Karen's many years of friendship with Rev. John, touched on the evening John and Connie met ("the world hasn't been the same since!"), and John's willingness to step forward, go through the UCSL Affiliation Process and lead the San Diego Center for Spiritual Living into new growth and revitalization. The interleaving of the Declaration of Principles and the Global Heart Vision were read, respectively, by Rev. Gordon and Rev. Sharon Hudson, UCSL Ecclesiastical Representative and Founding Minister of Light of Life Center for Spiritual Living in Rancho Bernardo. Officiant Dr. Kathy Hearn, Community Spiritual Leader of United Centers for Spiritual Living, delivered the Installation Message and performed the sacred Installation of Senior Minister Rev. John Poleski, the officers of the Board of Directors, the Practitioners, and the membership of San Diego Center for Spiritual Living. Rev. Kevin Bucy, Founding Minister of Universal Spirit Center, delivered the Benediction.
Music was a powerful force throughout the proceedings. One of Rev. John's favorite pieces of classical music, Dvorak's "From The New World, Largo", filled the room as Mr. Steve Bates introduced the ministers in the processional. Long-time friend Rev. Fran Loskota-Christ, artistic director of Seaside Center for Spiritual Living in Encinitas, CA, and a regular performer at the Westgate Hotel in downtown San Diego, honored Rev. John with a piece she selected for his installation - "Let Somebody Know" by Brenda Russell. Jim & Carol Rieger and Sylvia Isely-Aguilera of the San Diego Center for Spiritual Living house band, Trilogy, beautifully performed Jan Garrett's "I Dreamed of Rain," and featured Sylvia as soloist in "Grow A Church", the prelude for Sunday services by Margaret Owen. That was just the beginning.
The highlight of the musical performances was the finale of Rev. John Poleski doffing his robes and strapping on his Guild 12-string acoustic guitar. Backed by Trilogy, John stepped fully into his former rock-star mode and wowed the audience with a powerful rendition of Supertramp's made-for-the-12-string "Give A Little Bit." Through a standing ovation and whoops and hollers, Rev. Roger Juline had to reclaim the audience for Rev. Kevin's closing comments and prayer.
Rev. John said it very well when he included on the back cover of the Installation Programme: "My heartfelt thanks to all those who made today a sacred and joyful experience." This heartfelt thanks is extended to Nancy Moyer, Event Coordinator, who worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth operation of all activities. Nancy was supported by team members Linda and Steve Bates, Eileen Bell, Noble Benning, Coco Cabuquit-Jarboe, Ken and Kathy Casey, Constance Cook-Core, Jan Dawson, Dolores Dempsey, Hope Engel, June Francis, Paulina Gilbert, Courtney Griffith, Sylvia Isely-Aguilera, Brad Moyer, Jim and Carol Rieger, Charise Rigby-Fene, and Kathy Thompson. Heartfelt thanks to all!
Rev. John also extends special thanks to the following people for supporting him through the United Centers for Spiritual Living Affiliation Process: Dr. Gordon Bishop, Annie Glasgow, RScP, Dr. Kathy Hearn, Rev. Sharon Hudson, Rev. Roger Juline, and Taffye Wallace, RScP.

| Membership Has Its Privileges
Nancy Moyer
Membership Coordinator
Are you one of those people who don't join organizations? One of those people who aren't comfortable making a commitment? Worried about what will happen once you do join? Well, sometimes, you just gotta have faith. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."
Sometimes we experience difficulties in life. Sometimes we have questions that no one seems to be able to answer for us. Maybe we're just not looking in the right place. Albert Einstein once said "When the solution is simple, God is answering." Is God answering you right now?
Let the San Diego Center for Spiritual Living assist you in finding those answers or in overcoming those difficulties. We are a spiritual community that will uplift you and support you as we share our spiritual journeys with each other. I invite you to join us on any Sunday morning, and let us help you take that first step. Let us show you that most solutions are simple when faith guides us. We would love to have you as a member.
It is with joy that I welcome our two newest members who took that first step -- Paulina Gilbert and Laura Stewart. We are so happy to have you as members of our spiritual family.

| Reaching Out To Our Community
Ken Casey
Outreach Coordinator
The San Diego Center for Spiritual Living continues to make a difference in our community with some wonderful outreach adventures the last couple of months. Our volunteers at the annual San Diego Stand Down performed scullery duty in the kitchens, passed out goodie-bags of toiletries for showers, and did counseling and prayer work in the Chaplain's tent among other duties. Stand Down helps to bring needed services to the homeless Veterans in our communities. This year, the San Diego Stand Down served over 1300 Veterans during its three day camp near Balboa Park. Services provided included sleeping quarters, meals, clothing, medical, dental, vision, housing and legal assistance, counseling and prayers. By far, the greatest service for these veterans was to have a willing ear to listen to them from the kitchen to the showers to the service tents. We are proud to support such a worthy cause and will be Pumped Up for Stand Down again next year.
We collected fun and inspirational children's books for our friends at the I AM Foundation; an organization with whom our San Diego Center for Spiritual Living has a long and rich history. The I AM Foundation's Million Books for Kids Campaign is donating inspirational, affirmative books to schools, libraries and homes of children throughout our community and world. Our book donations went to children at the ERAA 2007 Back to School Youth Festival held at Lincoln High School on August 25th.
San Diego Center for Spiritual Living held a Needs Drive for the San Diego Birthing Project - another wonderful San Diego-based group that helps guide teenage young women through pregnancy and the first year of being a Mom and raising their babies. The San Diego Birthing Project accepts referrals from anyone who knows a pregnant woman who would like to participate. They also welcome volunteers and donations of car seats, baby clothes and other necessities.
Did we say "Make a Difference?" That is just what we are doing on a grand scale as Championship Partners with Helice Bridges, our delightful guest speaker Oct. 14th, and Difference Makers International in the 'Let's Paint the Town Blue' Campaign Nov. 5-12. You can be assured we will be passing out plenty of blue 'Who I Am Makes A Difference' ribbons.
You can find out more about these wonderful programs and consider how YOU can make a difference. To contact the San Diego Birthing Project directly, please email sdbirthproj@aol.com . To paint the town with Blue Ribbons, please visit Difference Makers, Int'l because Who You Are Makes A Difference! Watch our weekly announcements for our Outreach program to support those impacted by the San Diego fires. |

"A room without books is like a body without a soul." (Marcus Tullius Cicero, Statesman, scholar, and writer, 106BC - 43BC)
Have you considered shopping at the Spiritual Living Bookstore for this year's Holiday gifts? Books are a wonderful gift because they never stop giving. What we first read, we then act upon. The greatest university of all is a collection of books. And, when we re-read a favorite book, we learn again because we are a different person than we were the first time we read that particular book. A good book is a treasure to cherish forever. Our Bookstore is filled with wonderful offerings about our relationship with God, and Religious Science, and living our best life ever. This knowledge is a glorious thing to share with family members, or co-workers, or friends. I invite you to take time each Sunday to view the books we have available to aid in your personal growth. If there's a book you want and you don't see it, let me know. This is your bookstore, and we will be happy to get that book for you.
I want to take this opportunity to welcome and thank Linda Bates for volunteering her time to operate the Spiritual Living Bookstore twice each month. Her kindness and creativity are much appreciated.
Change your thinking. Change your life. Buy a book!

Practitioner Pillars
Constance Cook-Core, RScP
Holmes Institute Ministerial Student
I love California. Like other natives of this beautiful state, I grew up with earthquakes, Santa Ana wind-driven canyon and brush fires, and the predictable winter floods and mudslides that follow the fires. I have lived through an awful lot of them. This one was different. It was both better and worse than all others in my experience.
On Sunday afternoon, our senior minister drove up to Laguna Hills to support a fellow minister at an ordination ceremony. I stayed with others at our Center visioning for our new home in downtown San Diego. As we left the building, I knew something was off. I recognized that familiar Santa Ana Wildfire smell. The winds were strong, so I really couldn't tell how far away or in which particular direction the fire was burning.
By Monday morning it was clear to all that this fire was different. The winds were too strong and unpredictable for flying. The fires were raging uncontrolled through canyons and communities.
We still have local people who have not completely healed from the Cedar Fire four years ago. I was beginning to sense their deep fear. I prayed. For them, for the firefighters, for all people, for the animals, insects, and bugs, and for the plants that were being consumed by the flames. I prayed to be a calming presence. I wrote the prayer as a reminder to me. Then I accepted that inner guidance to share it with others. What a difference that prayer made!
We started receiving calls and emails of thanks and prayer requests from across the country and beyond our national borders. At our home office on Point Loma, so close to the beach, the winds whipped scorching air and the yard accumulated blackened ash. Then the winds started to calm enough to start air-drops of water and fire retardant. And more people breathed easily even though the fires continued.
We canceled our classes and answered the call to connect, serve, and support in whatever manner we were able. Rev. John made calls from our home phone so we could leave the church phone line open for incoming calls. Over the next several days, John contacted every member of our Center personally, and many others who were guests, visitors, friends, and colleagues. Members and friends of our Center volunteered at the Qualcomm Stadium Evacuation Center.
Mayor Jerry Sanders, County Supervisor Ron Roberts, and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger were all here in San Diego staying visible, communicating the latest, and ensuring that everything that could be done was being done. They were being present. President George Bush arrived and met with officials, people whose home was now charred rubble, and firefighters. He was being present. He also declared our area a "Disaster" so the people impacted by the fires would be eligible for specific and expedited assistance programs.
National and network news agencies and anchors came to San Diego to cover the fires and the handling of emergency services for the people being evacuated and displaced. It seemed as though some were looking for the good in all this, and some were looking for the worst. Either way, they were all doing the best job they were capable of doing at the time.
What I know about the fires in San Diego is that they draw our communities together in support of each other like nothing else can. We have the best firefighters in the world in this part of the globe where it is necessary that they be so. These are the professionals that are dedicated to preserving life and as much property as they can, while risking their own lives to protect others. And we are San Diegans. It is no surprise that one estimate of the population at Qualcomm was 50% evacuees and 50% volunteers. We were all being present. We were all being One. ~ Namaste |
