The following is a true story about robbers named the Cooley Gang who worked their trade
in the southern part of Fayette County, Pennsylvania in the early 1890's. They are our
ancestors.
The Stories consist of a family story and the actual newspaper articles transcribed from a
publication called "THE GENIUS OF LIBERTY". This publication is on microfilm in
the Pennsylvania Room of the Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Public Library.
"The Genius of Liberty" was a Democratic Newspaper established in 1805 The
Genius reported news in the Fayette County, Pennsylvania area. The new owners of the
Newspaper named in June of 1882, were Albert Marshall Peer and Frank M. Higgins.
The news articles are interesting in that the chronicled the final days of the Cooley
Gang. These newspaper articles are written in the emotional and opinionated style
that was widely accepted in the late 1800's. The subject matter of the stories is
sad and tragic. Their value lies in that they offer a brief glimpse of life as it
was in the early 1890's. ...end |
