Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse I have big problems using ICS. It often freezes everything, and when the game continues you have been stolen often a couple of minutes! And sometimes you have to close the whole connection, nothing happens. What's wrong? Are the problems due to the ICS system or should I claim our systems here? I have this problem coming from the UK too and it can get very frustrating indeed - I once lost 15 minutes on one move in a game :-( > And sometimes you have to close the whole connection, nothing happens. When I get a long pause now, I force the connection to close and then re- connect. You should be able to then reload the game using "load white-black" (where white = name of the white player and black = similarly so). When a connection is dropped by either player, the game is automatically saved and then adjourned. Richard K. Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse I guess the solution is for the creators of ICS to make a client process that runs on the local machine. It could keep track of how much time the player uses. As it is now I guess the ICS program that runs on lark.utah.edu does all the time checking. So when the network is overloaded, it just thinks the player is moving slowly. Not that I know if it is true or not, but isn't the packages that run on the net timestamped ? if so they could be used to figure out when the package was sent, and all the problems would be solved. -- ||||||||||| ||||| : "Alt er subjektivt" -tp : || || || : "Det e muli man e pe feil villspor.." -tp : || ||||| : spill ludo.. : || || : "Alt er objektivt.." -tp : Michael D Moore Feb 1 1992, 6:39 am show options Newsgroups: rec.games.chess From: mmo...@lark.utah.edu (Michael D Moore) - Find messages by this author Date: Fri, 31 Jan 92 15:35:29 GMT Local: Fri, Jan 31 1992 7:35 am Subject: Re: ICS cheats! In general, you can expect to lose a good deal of time because of the delays. It isn't that the server has frozen up but that your commands have not yet reached the server, so that it seems as though ICS is not responding. Hopefully when I release the code to the public domain there will be a server set up in Europe, allowing people from that area a much better net response. Until such time (approximately a month from now), I'd suggest you play long games, of 90 minutes or more. -Regards, Michael Moore (University of Utah)
