I would like to see significant, timely coverage of the match made available to the net, primarily through this group. I have already had some suggestions regarding using ICS, the chessnews list, etc in a variety of ways. I would like to receive specific suggestions for netcoverage, from the content of postings to manner of transmission and even criteria for accreditation (I envision masses of netters showing up asking to be accredited as journalists for "Internet"!). Please e-mail your thoughts to me (chess...@netcom.com), also posting to the net if you wish. In a few weeks, when I have an official status with the match, I will post a summary of the ideas together with my comments and, if we are ready, an "official" policy statement. I have already pointed out to the organizers that even if they did not, for some reason, want to supply the net with info, it would just get reposted from other sources, so I have urged an extremely cooperative attitude. At the same time, they cannot be expected to devote serious resources to an endeavor which does not help pay the bills. One obvious option is to solicit volunteer work, another, to seek a small sponsor who would fund net-related activites. The main point is that if we come up with good ideas for the coverage now, they will be easy to implement. This is a big event, and chess will be served best by extensive worldwide coverage. I will help to make the net coverage as good as possible, but I can use your help with innovative ideas for viewing the games and transmitting the information. I won't have anything more to say on this for a couple of weeks, as I am off on my last vacation before the match, playing in the tournament in Reno and then going to Hawaii for a conference (I intend to confer with some fish!). But I will examine all replies in the latter half of May and transmit them to the organizers in early june. Eric Schiller
