Aragorn? Manon? was: Re: ICS ip address Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse Hi everyone. Just figured I would let you all in on ICS happenings of the recent past, and the more distant future. If you are interested in what will be happening to ICS in the near future, read on... Bill Kish (router) and myself (MataPato) took over the internet chess server (ICS) in July of 1992. Before then, it had existed at several places, two of which I remember: eve.assumption.edu, and eaststar.utah.edu. Since then, we have seen (thanks to Darooha, aka Danny Sleator, who has written almost all the improvements) ICS grow to become the incredibly active and enjoyable chess club that it is. (Almost 2000 games/day) When we got ICS, there were a couple "hoops" I had to jump through-- a couple conditions that had to be satisfied. 1. There must be no way system security could be compromised through ICS. 2. ICS must not infringe on system performance with respect to its real purpose: development of network management software. 3. Should the machine ever need to be used for any purpose, ICS would be interrupted. (i.e. we would not let ICS keep us from doing whatever we needed to do with the machine) 4. Bill and I would be ultimately responsible for anything that happened to the machine while running ICS. Satisfying these conditions, my Boss let us use my "office" machine, a sparcstation IPX, for ICS- valkyries. If you remember, ICS service was interrupted for about a week earlier in the year. This happened when valkyries' system integrity broke down. When it was determined that ICS was not at fault, it was allowed to be restarted. More recently, my boss needed to go to a conference and demonstrate some SNMP-V2 code. He needed a machine to do the demonstration on, and took valkyries. Not wanting to stop ICS, I gave my own machine the name "valkyries," took its IP address, and started the chess server on it. Unfortunately, my machine runs a "version" of 4.3 BSD Unix, which only allows 64 open files at once, per process. (Every person connected to ICS is considered a file. SunOs, on the sparcstation, allows 256 open files at once) For this reason, we limited the number of people to connect to ICS at once to 55. However, this was not really an acceptable number of people for when GM Rohde played the Deep Blue sim. For this reason, we looked into other machines to run ICS. The two machines we found were Aragorn and Manon. Darooha got Manon, Bill and I got Aragorn. It's a little more complicated than this, but we ended up using Aragorn, my office-mate's machine. The "real" valkyries is still not back from a conference. Of course, all the time the real valkyries is gone, it's disk (With all the FTPable software) is gone with it. For this reason, so long as the "real" valkyries is gone, the FTP server has been and will be unavailable. Bill and I are both studying hardly to become computer engineers. This is our fourth year at Carnegie Mellon University, so we are graduating in May. Since we are graduating, we are also no longer going to be working the same job that provides us with valkyries. Fortunately, ICS will not simply disappear. Nor will it actually move from CMU. The current plan is as follows: Use aragorn/valkyries for a while, but eventually start running it on a different machine, with a different IP address. This will most likely be something like "chess.andrew.cmu.edu" or "ics.andrew.cmu.edu"- haven't decided yet. This machine will for some time be one of our (router's or mine) personal computers. Our boss has allowed us to keep them connected to CMU's backbone for as long as we like. Thus, ICS is moving to a computer dedicated to running ICS- availability and stability will be greatly improved. As I said, these transitions will not be taking place immediately. Since we (Bill and I) are in our last week of classes right now, we are quite busy. We expect to be able to do a bunch of this transitioning in early May. Until then, you may not see us very often. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let us know. (Responses will probably take about a week... :) Thanks for your patience. -John Chanak Jeffrey C.
