Quite a bit, I'm happy to say. The thought that something that started out as a bit of Internet Anarchy will now go commercial just rubs me the wrong way. Also, the software hoarding (yes, you do hear echoes of the FSF) tactics of the current ICS developers adds insult to injury. Most of the new developments in terms of wild chess, potential bughouse, etc., are rather unimportant to me. I've been rather happy with the services provided by ICS for quite some time, almost since the early days. Messages, channels, etc., don't add much to my enjoyment of playing chess over the network with flesh and blood opponents. If I want rating points for blood, games between GM's and top level computers, I'll buy a chess magazine and read through it. In order to torpedo this, in my opinion, misguided effort by the current ICS developers to take the venture commercial, I am willing to donate up to $100 to the Pittsburg crowd (given guarantees that the server code will be covered by the GPL) to facilitate development of a FREE ICS. I encourage others to do the same. -- --- Dietrich Kappe k...@wimpy.uchicago.edu Paul Hsieh Oct 12 1993, 6:45 pm show options Newsgroups: rec.games.chess From: h...@math.toronto.edu (Paul Hsieh) - Find messages by this author Date: Wed, 13 Oct 93 01:22:13 GMT Local: Tues, Oct 12 1993 6:22 pm Subject: Re: Freeware ICS Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse - Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - In article k...@wimpy.cpe.uchicago.edu (Dietrich Kappe) writes: >With the recent post about taking the ICS Server commercial I have >been forced to evaluate how much a free server for myself and others, >both in terms of free connections and in terms of the free >availability of source code, is worth to me. I like ICS because its free, and that means lots of people sign on and that means I have a wide variety of opponents to choose from. After reading this post I realized how much the ICS means to me just the way it is. Free. If you don't mind accepting Canadian money, I will contribute $130 (about $100 US) to the Pittsburg group on the condition that make sure it stays free and they release the source code. (I would suggest that they also forget about wild and bughouse chess and consider adding in odds and simultaneous chess) Paul Hsieh Axel Boldt Oct 14 1993, 6:45 pm show options Newsgroups: rec.games.chess From: a...@renoir.uni-paderborn.de (Axel Boldt) - Find messages by this author Date: 14 Oct 1993 05:27:46 +0100 Local: Wed, Oct 13 1993 9:27 pm Subject: Re: Freeware ICS Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse I will donate $50 to the group who first puts a chess server of comparable quality to the current one under the GNU license.
