Does anyone know where the chess server has gone? I'm not sure what the problem was but as a fellow Delphi user, let me suggest you simply try again: the ics.uoknor.edu 5000 should work... if not try the rafael.metiu.ucsb.edu 5000. Hope to see you there. I play under the name EJM. Good luck, BAGA! It seems to be at 'news.panix.com' Dan Sleator has gone dancing of into the night with ics for some reason. I do not know why. ics.uoknor.edu was a very stable environment for it. Apparently a few people had problems with lag. My guess would be they will continue to have a problem unless it is placed close to them, and the only way to do that for everyone to to have several ics's with a centeral rating server to coordinate, as was the origional design. Danny's propriatary version of the ics does not currently and will not ever willingly support such an architecture. This has been made clear by Danniel himself. ICS ran here for 1 month. During that time, the host machine was almost always up and running with 27 solid days of system uptime. The majority of ics downtime was due to rebooting ics to put out the latest version of it which included some new or changed feature. If there were too many network problems with this site, I am unawhere of them. Lag will continue to be a problem, and access from Europe will always be a problem (until the trans-Atlantic link is upgraded). Be that as it may, I hav no problem with trying to find the 'best' home possible for it. I am puzzled with why he moved it so quickly and without and prior announcement or discussion. I am also puzzled by him having to move it again in less than a days time. Perhaps the move was not well planned. I would like to see ics continue to be well supported. I recognize and applude Danniel's time and energy invested into this project. He is possesive of that investment, and his involvement with the project. He has stated his desire and ambition to have ics evolve beyond it's current community service status and venture out into the world of commercialism. The ics as it stands now it very valuable to many people, and some are even willing to pay to see it continue. On the other hand, there are also many who are willing to donate time and energy to insure that there is an ics freely available for the benefit and enjoyment of all. This has stopped Danny from following through with his ambitions for now. But, what is next? Danny has a firm and unyealding grip on the torch. He does not intend to pass it on... at least, he has stated no such intention nor has he even hinted that he would someday be willing to let someone else take the project over, as he himself did, if and when he decided to do something else with his time. When the ics stops being a cummunity service, it will cease to be ics. Danniel has said he wants this. It would then seem he has already decided to do something else with his time, and when he finds a way to do it, he will take his ics with him. And for me, that will be a sad day. Since sometime over the last weekend (Nov. 20 - 21), the US ICS has moved to news.panix.com 5000. For how long? Well, as Daroo once said, in one of his "Zen" moments, nothing is permanent.
