Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse Jerry Hanken, after tremendous resistance to an ICS broadcast of the US championships, has informed me that Eric Schiller has "exclusive rights" to internet broadcasting of the US championship. I contacted Bob Nasiff and Al Lawrence at the USCF, and while both of them were shocked to hear of this arrangement, they said that Hanken is running the tournament and has the right to make such an arrangement. I've contacted those who signed up, and they all chose to credit their payments towards watching the upcoming Marshall Winter International. I think them all for their support. I encourage them and others who are unhappy with the good ole boys to write to Interplay and tell them how much exposure they have just lost. I look forward to hearing from Eric Schiller how much he paid for this "exclusive right", as he insisted I should pay a large sum of money to broadcast the games. As a life member of the USCF, I'd like to know if instead we're paying Schiller to give him this right, as I strongly suspect. Eric? After seeing the pitiful bonuses the US players got for the great achievement of winning a strong World Team Championship, I spoke to Elliot Winslow. I offered to match the annual master budget of the USCF. This was before this idea of broadcasting the championship, lest there be suspicions of a quid pro quo. In the face of the gutless performance by USCF officials here, I'm withdrawing that offer, and any ideas I may have entertained of supporting the USCF. Perhaps Eric Schiller will pick up the slack. Finally, I want to share with you some of the expenses I would have incurred in covering the US championship, for those who accused me of being in it for the money, particularly with the impoverished and limited audience on the net. Reporter's wage(conservatively estimated at $5/hr, I'd have paid him more): $560 Phone line($75/day hotel charge): $1050 Phone bill($.13/minute for internet connection, not including hotel addon!) $600 Expert commentators(At least 1 per session, @$100 each) $1400 This conservatively adds up to over $3600. Now, assuming people all signed up for *every* round, it would still take 50 people just to break even! The average person who signed up signed up for 2 rounds, so it would take 300 people to break even! And this is at *very* conservative estimates of expenses. I'd have been happy to take a loss in what I regard as a very worthy cause, but you can imagine that I want nothing more to do with the USCF. Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse The message when you log into the ICS is correct. The most recent plan was only to ask for voluntary contributions. About a week ago, Jones and I had a long phone conversation in which we discussed the plans for airing the games. We chose the voluntary route because (1) Everything was happening at the last minute, and we had not tested the system for entering moves. We did not want to charge for a service that might not be working smoothly. (2) Being the first such event, we thought it would get more attention if there were fewer obstacles to people watching it. (3) The voluntary route was certain to maintain better relations with the ICS public, and it might even draw more revenue. If the USCF changes its mind, we might be able to proceed with this plan (assuming we could get somebody in LA to enter the moves). Boy, it's a lucky thing I work for a securities firm that's required by law to tape all phone conversations! Furthermore, the USCF did not turn hostile. Jerry Hanken's always been hostile, while everyone else I've spoken to has been sympathetic, if too much of a wimp to challenge a policy board member. Eric, Jerry Hanken in no sense represents me or 99% of USCF members. He's a product of the inbred apartheid system of USCF voting, where I get to pay $600 for life membership, and not to vote in USCF elections. More importantly, where's you or Jerry to cover the thousands of dollars I'd lose covering the event? You clearly aren't hostile to that, are you. If I'm willing to spend $20,000 on chess this year, I'll spend $20,000. If people help defray the cost of what they enjoy, it just means I'll spread that money around more. You and Jerry, on the other hand, are taking money, not putting it in.
