The Trinity in the New Testament, part 1: The Deity of
Christ |
|
Some
people say that Jesus never claimed to be God or that the New Testament does
not teach that Jesus is God. However there is abundant Biblical testimony to
the deity (i.e. the "god-ness") of Christ, as well as to that of
the Father and the Holy Spirit. This
week we look at a very small sampling from three main groups of
passages that show that Jesus Christ shares the nature of God, and thus is
God along with the Father and the Holy Spirit. GROUP
ONE: Passages that explicitly call
Jesus "God". John 1:1; 1:18; 20:28; Acts 20:28; Romans 9:5; Hebrews
1:8; Titus 2:13; 2 Peter 1:1. GROUP
TWO: Passages where the exclusive
activity of God is attributed to Jesus: Creation (John 1;3; Col 1:16; Heb
1:2), Salvation (Acts 4:12; Romans 10:12-14), Raising of the Dead, (Luke
7:11-17; John 5:21; 6:40); Forgiving Sins (Mark 2:1-12; Luke 24:47; Acts
5:31; Col 3:13), Judging all men (Matt 25:31-46; John 5:19-29; Acts 10:42; 1
Cor 4:4-5), Receiving worship and praise (Matt 21:15-16; Eph 5:19; 1 Tim
1:12; Rev 5:8-14; Matt 14:33; 28:9, 17; John 5:23; 20:28; Phil 2:10-11; Heb
1:6; Rev 5:8-12), Hearing and answering prayer (Acts 1:24; 7:59-60; 9:10-17,
21; 22:16, 19; 1 Cor 1:2; 16:22; 2 Cor 12:8) GROUP
THREE. Those places in the NT
where OT passages about the LORD1 are applied directly to Jesus.
The LORD is "King of Kings"/Jesus is "King of Kings" (Deu
10:17; Rev 17:14; 19:16); The LORD/Jesus is Creator and exists without change
eternally (Ps 102:25-27; Heb 1:10-12); Those who call on the name of the
LORD/the name of Jesus will be saved (Joel 2:32; Acts 4:12; Rom 10:13); the
LORD on His throne IS Jesus in His glory (Isa 6:1-3; John 12:40-41); it is
the LORD/Jesus who we are to sanctify in our heart (Isa 8:12-13; 1 Peter
3:14-15); men will look upon the LORD/Jesus whom they have pierced (Zech
12:10; John 19:37). There are many, many more such passages, but for now this
will have to do. 1 "LORD"
(all uppercase) is the common OT translation of the covenant name of God from
Exodus 3:14, i.e. "I am that I am". |
