Waikiki Area

Our first few days in Oahu were spent in and around Waikiki Beach. While Rich was busy at the Microscopy and Microanalysis 2005 Conference, Karol Ann was able to explore in a more leisurely fashion.

Waikiki Beach, as a public park, is about a mile long, and contains many scenic spots along the beach as well.

Walking along the beach there are a number of piers extending out into the ocean. Here is a look back at the hotels that line the beach. Our hotel, the Hyatt, is shown as the two matching towers in the center of the picture.

We were on the 33rd floor of the Hyatt, facing the Windward Mountains. Here is one view from our balcony.

The Hyatt has an open air shopping plaza that covers the whole first floor of the hotel complex. We were actually rained on, lightly, when we arrived at the hotel as we wandered around the first floor looking for the Registration Desk, which was on the second floor. One fine feature in this open air plaza was a three story waterfall as shown in this picture.

There were swimmers and surfers in the water at all times.

There were many scenic spots along the beach. This Banyan tree was one.

Diamond Head sits just beyond the end of Waikiki Beach. Rich was able to run along the beach up to the foot of Diamond Head - it really is not very far.

Tuesday, Karol Ann caught the Hilo Hatties store shuttle. This took her to the flagship store of the Hilo Hatties chain in downtown Honolulu. She bought a bunch of souvenirs there as well as the Hawaiian clothes we wore at the Polynesian Cultural Center on Thursday. Very nice and very Hawaiian.

Just at the end of Waikiki is Kapiolani Park. The Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium are located down there. Neither is large, but they do feature some unique plants and animals.

There was a nice flower display there.

Going back to the hotel now. One curious thing about Waikiki is that there are these ABC Stores every block. In fact our hotel, the Hyatt had three ABC Stores scattered around the shopping plaza. ABC Stores are a combination of convenience store, souvenir store, clothes store, food store, and beach stuff store.
