The Hanging Hills overlooking western Meriden are a prominent landmark in central Connecticut. Anyone driving along I-84 gets a dramatic view of them, and the ride along I-691 takes you right up and over the base of these hills. I hope to have some nice shots of these views later this month.
Hubbard Park located at the feet of these hills includes Castle Craig which is the subject of this page. The Castle, actually a small tower, is located on the end of the centermost of the three ridges that make up the Hanging Hills. It provides a dramatic view of the central Connecticut valley.

In season you can drive to the top of the overlook although people can also hike the road or bike up as well. You will be rewarded with quite a view. Next to the Castle is a large flag.

The view is mainly to the south as the Hills block good views north. But this sweeping view looks directly south. The day was rather more hazy than I would have liked, but if you look on the horizon to the right of the picture's center you can discern the Sleeping Giant ridge with the giant's head to the right end.

Looking to the east, you can see Meriden and the eastern peak of the Hanging Hills. The highway is I-691.

The Castle is also dramatically lighted at night and in the Christmas season. No photos of those. Visiting the Castle is a nice ride and particularly for those of us who drive by it frequently it is enlightening to see what it looks like close up and to get to enjoy the sweeping view of the valley that it provides.
You may also want to take my photo tour of Sleeping Giant State Park too.
