In northern Hamden, CT the Sleeping Giant State Park is a prominent feature. Located about 10 miles north of New Haven, this ridge has the appearance of a sleeping giant, hence the name. Judge for yourself with this picture taken from I-91 north.

While climbing up the 1.6 mile Tower Trail, there are some nice views along the way. The trail is rather rocky and not the easiest climb, but families can get a stroller up and down it with some dedicated effort. This view looking west towards Bethany is quite nice.

At the end of the Tower Trail is a four story stone tower. The views are rather limited considering as the surrounding trees have grown over the years. From the top you can still get some fine views in most directions. The tower is located near the "left hip" of the giant.

The tower is about 750 feet in elevation vs. a ground level elevation of 100 feet, so you do have something of a climb to get to the top. One of the nicer views is looking south. New Haven can be seen on the center of the horizon in this case.

Finally here's a picture of me and Becky, our 9 year old as shot by Joanna, our 12 year old. We're at the top of the tower for this one.

The park is quite a nice place. It has many other hiking trails as well as a stream running past the ridge down by the picnic area. It is easily accessible off Route 10.
I hope that you've enjoyed my tour of the Sleeping Giant.
