These hiking sticks are trunks of trees with four to ten years of growth in the hardwood forests of miswestern USA. Sticks are cut and trimmed during the dormant, leafless, time of year, and dried for six months in Arizona. Once dried, the rough outer bark is hand sanded. The entire stick is bathed in polyurethane varnish, then wiped with new cheesecloth and dried for three more months. Finally, a hole is drilled for a rawhide strap for holding, hanging, or tying. A rubber tip is added to protect the wood end from wear and provides a slight cushioning effect as the stick makes contact with the ground. Most hardware stores have the replacement tips available. |

We have been making these sticks/staffs for eighteen years for family, friends, and business associates. One young man has refused to use the rubber tip and has hiked ninety plus miles with it on Grand Canyon trails. The end of his stick was frayed. He says he fixed it by sawing a couple of inches off the end of the stick and still refuses the rubber tip. Hiking staffs reduce fatigue and increase stability and balance on the trail. |
