Clemmie Steidel
Clemmie Hughes Steidel, 82, died Oct. 25 at Parkview Hospital in Riverside.
The cause of death is undetermined pending a doctor's report. No services are
planned. Pierce Brothers Grimes Mortuary in Corona is handling the
arrangements. Mrs. Steidel, who was born in Pryor, Okla., lived in Riverside
a total of 50 years. She also lived in Joshua Tree three years. She was a
baker at Riverside Juvenile Hall fro 10 years before she retired in 1978. She
graduated in 1937 from Poly High School in Riverside. Mrs Steidel is survived
by a daughter, Glenda Trisler of Riverside; two sons, Walter Hughes of San
Bernardino and Bill Hughes of Joshua Tree; five grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Viola Rainwater of Riverside. The family
suggests memorial contributions to charity.

Mary Elizabeth Crow, daughter of George W. and Nancy (Howard) Crow, was born
in Jasper County, Missouri, 2 March 1869. As a young girl she lived in
Madison Co., Arkansas and Leavenworth, Kansas. At age 15 she moved with her
family to Washington County, Arkansas where she married Albert Chidester 22
June 1884. She was not yet age 16 and Albert was age 28. When the new State
of Oklahoma was formed in 1907, Albert and Mary (Crow) Chidester moved their
family to Mayes County and resided there until she died 15 April 1933. Her
husband Albert Chidester died 1 February 1933 and both are buried Chouteau
Cemetery, Mayes Co., Oklahoma.

Viola was born 21 February 1889, Washington County, Arkansas, daughter of
Mary Elizabeth Crow and Albert Chidester. She married Hayes Levi Smith, 15
February 1905 in Washington County, Arkansas. In 1909 the family moved to
Marion County, Illinois and built a home on land given them by Hayes parents.
In 1913, the family moved by train to the Portland, Oregon area where Hayes
was worked. The next moved to Grays Harbor, Washington, and in 1916 Hayes was
working in Montana. Viola did not want to move the children to Montana,
instead moved with them to her parents home near Pryor, Oklahoma. Within a
year Hayes joined them in 1917 the family returned to Marion County, Illinois.
In 1932, Viola was called to help with her ill and aging parents, near Pryor,
Oklahome where she stayed until they died in early 1933.
Viola Ann Chidester and Hayes L. Smith were divorced in 1933 and she
returned to Illinois, this time to Rockford where she worked as a nurse.
Viola died 9 August 1945 in LaMoille, Bureau County, Illinois. Both Viola and
Hayes are buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Marion County, Illinois.

Chidester. Earl and Martha were divorced when the two sons were young. He
has been happily married for many years to Mreata, a special lady loved by all
members of the family. Both have lived in Modesto, California for many

April 1, 1825, Samuel Chidester and Rachel, his wife, both of Pike Co, IL,
sold land they owned in Hardin Twp., Deed #3425, Recorded 8 May, 1825.
No record after 1830 census.
Possible link in old funeral home record stating "Samuel died between
1830/1835 and his body returned to MA.

Note: BIOGRAPHY: Rachael Chidester's second husband was WIlliam J. Kinney. She lived
in the household of daughter Saphronia Miscal in the 1850 census. She was in
the same household in the 1870 census, but Saphronia was married to Alpheus
Baker at this time. Rachel died a month after enumeration and is buried as
Rachel Kinney in the Old Barry Cemetary, Pike Co, IL Recorded in the Pike Co,
IL Cemetery Book - Vol 4 as Kinney, Rachel- 12 Feb 1787 - 18 July 1870
(83-5-6). At some point in time it waas stated that her father was born in
Ireland.
