Balden notes & chart, estimated dob used I had abt 1778.
Revere had abt 1783 in Va, d: 1863 Warren Co, IL.
Lewis moved to Washington Co, IN in 1813. He was a vet of the War of 1812.
In 1840 he moved to Warren Co, IL & died there.
Warren County became Henderson County in 1841.
Note: Lewis Crow, son of James and Jane Crow, was born near Abingdon, Washington
Co., VA in 1783. This date was established from Census Records taken in
Warren Co., Illinois, in both 1850 and 1860, and from an application for
Bounty Lands filed in Warren Co. in 1850. He grew up in Washington County,
Virginia where his father was a prosperous plantation owner.
On 21 January 1807 Lewis was married to Elizabeth Scott, an event recorded
in the Marriage Register Book 1, page 65 of Washington Co, VA. Elizabeth was
the daughter of Samuel Scott, Jr. and Jane Hutton, a prominent family in that
county.
Lewis was age 31 with a family of four children when he was drafted into
the Virginia Militia during the "Ware of 1812". He began his service 22 July
1814 as a Sergeant in Captain Abram Fulkerson's Company of Riflemen, 7th
Regiment, and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. Due to illness, Lewis
received an Honorable Discharge from his Company in Norfolk on 25 January 1815.
According to copies of Muster and Pay Rolls that we possess, Lewis received
muster out pay of $9.07 "for going home". The $9.07 was his per diem pay
calculated at 25 days travel at the rate of 20 miles a day. This was to cover
the expenses for traveling the 500 miles distance between Norfolk and Abingdon.
After the birth of their fifth child (Samuel) about 1815, Lewis and
Elizabeth (Scott) Crow left Washington County, Virginia and settled on new
lands in Washington County, Indiana. The last six of their children (all
daughters) were born in Washington County, Indiana where the family lived for
more than 25 years. Many of Lewis and Elizabeth's children were married in
Indiana but for some reason Illinois seemed to hold more promise and at age 60
Lewis moved to Warren County, Illinois which became his final home.
We have a certificate from the Illinois State Historical Society that
certifies Lewis Crow as a Warren County pioneer in 1843. When bounty lands
became available in 1850 for veterans of the War of 1812, Lewis received a
Warrent for 80 acres of land in Warren County. On 12 May 1857, Lewis made a
statement in Court that he had not previously applied for or possessed Bounty
Lands. Evidently he did not want the land or assigned the warrant to someone
else. Lewis had to file documents which were recorded in Warren County
relative to his eligibility for Bounty Lands, otherwise we would not have
known about his War of 1812 service.
Lewis and Elizabeth lived their last twenty years in Ellison Township,
Warren County. To find this location today, one would drive about 12 miles
south of Monmouth (the County seat) on U.S. 67, then about 5 miles west of
Roseville on State Highway 116. An easier way to locate this ancestral home
is to drive about 65 miles west of Peoria, Illinois, on State 116.
Lewis died 31 January 1863 and left no will. His estate was probated 19
August 1863 and personal assets were appraised at $241.61. No real property
is listed which suggests that he had conveyed it to his children. A note at
the bottom of the Appraisers document on file in Warren County states that the
widow of Lewis Crow died before the estate was settled. We do not know the
date in 1863 when she died.
It should be noted that both Lewis and Elizabeth died at the height of the
Civil War and hundreds of men from every county in Illinois, including Warren
County, were being buried monthly. It is easy to understand how it might be
difficult to find a tombstone for an elderly relative during this period in
our history.--Mary Bowen

a year old, they moved to Three Hills, Alberta, Canada, where Alberta was born.
Wilbur never renounced his US citizenship and was exempted by the US from

harvested much of the wheat in the area. He then moved to California, living
in La Verne for about a month before moving to Fresno, CA, where Wilbur worked

having passed through the privations of a new settlement & the perils of a
savage war, they each obtained a settlement of pre-emption (1400 acres of

Danville, and became the proprietor of a large tract of wild land on the Green
River. He moved with his family to the Green river country, then a
