Crow, John Henry (b. 22 AUG 1813, d. 21 JUL 1908)
Burial: Place: Lower Campground,Madison,AR
Note: RESEARCHER: Mary Bowen
In 1850's John H. moved to Bates County, MO. He is on 1860 US Census, on
1865 Kansas State Census living in Doniphan County, KS.
Note: John H., born 22 August 1813, son of Lewis and Elizabth (Scott) Crow, was
about two years old when his parents moved from Washington County, Virginia,
to Washington County, Indiana.
John grew up on a farm in Indiana with eight sisters and two brothers. He
was age twenty seven when he married Cynthia Ellen Harbison, age twenty, on 1
February 1838 and we have a copy of this marriage certificate from Washington
County, Indiana. Cynthis was the daughter of James Harbison and Nancy
Glazebrook.
Shortly after their marriage, John and Cynthia moved to Warren County,
Illinois, where their first child was born in 1839. The area became Henderson
County in 1841. Our records indicate that John moved to Illinois before his
parents, Lewis and Elizabeth. All five children of John and Cynthis were born
here in Illinois before Cynthia's untimely death at age 32. She died 18
October 1853 in Henderson County and was buried there in Kemp Cemetery beside
her mother, Ann (Glazebrook) Harbison.
Soon after the mid 1850's, John moved to Bates County, Missouri where he is
enumerated in the 1860 census with sons George and Levi, and daughter Louisa.
Then, according to the 1865 Kansas State Census John was living in Doniphan
County, which is located in the far northeastern corner of that state. His
oldest son, George Washington Crow (our direct ancestor) was married at age
twenty to Nancy Howard in Atchison County, Kansas in 1863. Atchison County is
just south of Doniphan County where they join, and this might have been the
first place that John lived in Kansas. His oldest daughter, Emeline was
married back in Henderson County, Illinois in 1868, which leads on to wonder
if he went back to Illinois for a short time.
Before 1870, at about age fifty-six, and with his first family grown, John
married Susan Hutchinson (widow Elliot). They moved to Madison County,
Arkansas, and had a second family larger than the first. When and where they
married is not known to this writer.
John H. Crow died at age ninety five, 21 July 1908 in Marble, Madison
County, Arkansas and was buried there in the "Old Campground Cemetery". Wife,
Susan died 9 April 1922 and is buried in the same cemetery.--Mary Bowen

Crow, GEORGE Washington (b. 5 JUL 1843, d. 1 JUL 1883)
Note: RESEARCHER: Mary Bowen
He was a blacksmith.
Note: George, son of John H. and Cynthia (Harbison) Crow, was born 5 July 1843 in
Warren County, Illinois. The 1850 census shows his parents living there with
their family of one daughter and two sons, including George age seven. His
mother, Cynthia Harbison, died in 1853 when he was ten years old.
The 1860 census of Bates County shows George age 17, brother Levi age 14,
and Emeline age 19, living with their father John age 46. They were residing
in Deer Creek Township and John stated that Farming was his occupation. Bates
County is about 45 miles due south of Kansas City on U.S. Highway 71.
George Washington Crow was married to Nancy Ann Howard, 10 December 1863 in
the City of Atchison, Atchison County, Kansas. George was age 20 and Nancy
was age 17. They were married by John M. Crowell, Mayor of Atchison. Nancy
was born in Buchanan County, Missouri and moved to Atchison County with her
parents in 1861. Many residents of Missouri moved into Kansas during the
Civil War to escape the terrible conflict there.
The first child of George and Nancy Crow was born in Doniphan County,
Kansas, in 1864. In the special Kansas State census of 1865, John H. Crow is
recorded as a resident of Doniphan County with son, George living in his
household. Nancy and the baby were listed in the household of her parents in
Atchison County in that same census.
George was a blacksmith for most or all of his adult life. The post Civil
War era was one of turmoil and a brankrupt economy. He moved his family
between Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas at least seven times in a period of
about fifteen years. His father had moved to Madison County, Arkansas in 1870
and he and Nancy stayed there on at least two occasions. The best way to
track the movements of George and Nancy is to check the place and date of
birth of their eight children.
The last home of George and Nancy was Washington County, Arkansas where
they had moved in 1881. Here on 1 July 1883, George died of typhoid fever
just four days before his fortieth birthday, leaving Nancy with eight children
ranging in age from two months to nineteen years.
Nancy Ann (Howard) Crow married for a second time on 2 September 1886 to
John M. Enyart in Washington County, Arkansas. By this union she had three
more children before his demise on 28 July 1894. At some time after 1894
Nancy moved to be closer to her Howard family who had homesteaded land in the
Oklahoma land rush of 1889 in the Kingfisher and Garfield County region.
After a lengthy illness she died at age 57 in Rogers County, Oklahoma on 16
april 1903 and was buried there.--Mary Bowen
