Music Guide REVIEW: Feather Box is one
of the numerous projects of cult singer/songwriter Damien Youth,
issuing the JUNO'S GARDEN album
in 1996. And it is simultaneously Damien Youth's most normal
and atypical work. Instead of the deep-in-the-forest folk-psychedelic
music that he plays on virtually every other record with which he's
been associated, with Feather Box he sang and wrote
college-radio friendly guitar rock, not far removed from the countless
R.E.M. imitators of the 1980s and 1990s. Even for that
genre, it's just a competent face in the crowd, though hints of his
more idiosyncratic sensibilities pop up here and there. Damien Youth
himself has admitted the group was an attempt to go commercial; dissatisfied
with the results, he left the band after the album's release. (2 ½
stars) -- Richie Unterberger |
