Marriage Notes for EDWARD FINCH and AGNES BROTHERS:
________________________________________________________________
The following was extracted from John A. Sands Finch Family publication.
In Charles City Co., Virginia an Edward Finch died in 1746 and his wife Agnes died in 1771. I believe that he was probably the son of Edward and Martha Finch of New Kent County, Va. The records of Charles Cy. Co. Virginia are quite complete and indicate the following:
The records of this county for the period 1766 - 1774 page 374 indicate that the will of Agnes Finch was dated Mar. 21, 1771 and probated on July 1, 1772. The estate of Agnes and Edward Finch was not settled until Dec. 25, 1792 according to the will book 1789 - 1808 page 130 for Charles City Co., VA.
This document would indicate that Edward Finch and his wife Agnes had the following children:
1. Daughter married George Marrable
2. William Finch
3. Daughter married William Holdcroft
4. Daughter married Edward Avery
5. Daughter married Benjamin Marrable
6. Adam Finch
7. Daughter married William Thompson
8. Eve Finch married Watson deceased and children mentioned
9. Brothers Finch deceased and children mentioned.
I have additional information on the descendants of only three of the children of Edward and Agnes Finch. It appears to me that Agnes Finch maiden name was probably Agnes Brothers in view of the fact she named one of her sons Brothers Finch. My information on descendants pertains to the sons of Edward and Agnes Finch. This information is as follows:
William Finch number 2 above the son of Edward and Agnes Finch died in Charles City Co., Va. in Nov. 1772. He married Mary Cox the widow of Charles Henry Cox. The Charles City, Co. Will Book 1789 - 1808 page 209 records the disposition of the estate of William Finch. His children were as follows:
1. Lucy Finch married Benjamin Walker
2. Henry Finch
3. Ann Finch married John Crosby
4. Eve Finch married John Stubblefield
5. Judith Finch married Malcom Grant
6. Edward Finch
7. William Finch
8. Frances Finch married John Lamb.
I have no further information on the descendants of this line of the family.

Notes for WILLIAM THOMPSON:
This is a possible lead as to William Thompson, but there is no real connection to establish it.
William THOMPSON S6217 West Tenn. #19113 $285/year issued 2 Aug. 1833.
27 Nov. 1832 Franklin County, Capt. William THOMPSON aged 79 states he was born in Dobbs County, N.C., in 1753 or 1754 but has no record of his age. He volunteered in the early part of the war in the Dobbs County militia under Col. Richard CASWELL. He was a Dobbs County resident. A British Man of War ship was blockading the inlet of Cape Fear, about 40 miles below Wilmington, and the company marched to that area and remained until it was ascertained that the British wanted to blockade only, not land. He volunteered again under Capt. William FELLOW and marched to Bald Head below Wilmington. After some time he volunteered again under Capt. George MILLER, Lt., AXIUM(?) and Col. CASWELL. Marched to Moores Creek Bridge and had a battle with the Scotch Tories. The Tories were defeated, their commanders MCCLOUD OR MCCLERD and MCDONALD were both killed, among others. Only one American, John GRADY, was killed two were wounded. The prisoners were released upon taking the oath of allegiance to the United States. Early in 1779 he enlisted under Capt. Moring and Col. Jonas JOHNSON. Marched with Col. MCDOWELL'S regiment to Augusta, Ga., and attacked the enemy at Stono on 22 June 1779. The enemy was reinforced from the islands near Charleston and the Americans under Gen. Lincoln were repulsed. Affiant was then acting as Quartermaster Willoughby WILLIAMS, the Quartermaster of Col. JOHNSON'S regiment. He encloses his discharge dated 10 July 1779, written by Willoughby WILLIAMS, whose widow married the late Gov. MCMINN of Tennessee. The handwriting is probably known by the Hon. H.L. WHITE of the U.S. Senate. In 1790 he was appointed captain of the militia under Col. William MCKINNEY. His commission is attached. He remained in the service until the close of the war in pursuit of the Tories about the country. The times were so gloomy that many of the principal men and officers, namely Gov. CASWELL, Col. GLASGOW, Col. COBB and others fled for refuge west of the mountains, leaving us to defend for ourselves and the country as best we could. In April 1781 affiant and a small scouting party were attacked in Duplin County, N.C. by a detachment from Lord CORNWALLIS'' army. He was taken prisoner and paroled, after having been robbed of his mare, saddle and bridle by a sergeant of the British Dragoons. The mare was valuable; he heard the sergeant say after taking her that he would not sell for 50 guineas. He resided in Dobbs and Wayne Counties, N.C., until 1796 when he removed to Washington County, Ga. In 1808 he removed from, there to Wilson County, Tenn. In 1818 he came to this county. Rev. Robert DOUGAN and Ellis OLDHAM vouch for THOMPSON.
14 June 1852 Thomas FINCH, administrator of the estate of the late William THOMPSON, appoints Tax W. NEWMAN his attorney. THOMPSON died 1 March 1836.

Major differences between KM info and the book "Lost Links" (LL) are, as follows:
LL shows only 3 sons (1 son is listed as James), versus 5 sons (and James does not appear).
LL states that Adam died 1798, versus 1801.
Additional differences between John A. Sands and both Karen's and LL is:
Sands shows Adam to have been born in Virginia (either Charles City or New Kent counties), rather than England.
Sands shows Adam's wife (and her father) to have the surname "Thomson", rather than "Thompson".

Adam does not appear as a child of Edward on the copy of the will I have for his grandfather, Adam Finch. However, an "Adeline?" (with the ? mark) does appear, and I haven't found a child of Edward's to bear this name. Thus, I suspect that the "Adeline?" on the copy of the will I have is actually for Edward's son "Adam".

Notes for EDWARD FINCH:
A letter dated June 11, 1794, from Edward Finch to General Lenoir, North Carolina, refers to a journey to Charles City County, Virginia with W. C. Ballard (probably Walter Clopton Ballard) March 1, 1794 regarding an impending lawsuit.
___________________________________________________
Edward served in Capt. Kittrell's Militia from Granville Co, NC in 1777 with the NC FINCHes who seemed to have Surry Co, VA ties. In the late 1770's Martha and Edward sold their land in Halifax Co, NC to Noah SLEDGE of Surry Co, VA. In 1779, Edward and Martha FINCH "of Wilkes Co, NC" sold more land in Halifax Co to the same Noah SLEDGE. On 23 , Edward received just over 600 acres of land in grants in Wilkes Co, NC. The peculiar thing to me is that in 1813, after he had moved to Newberry Co, SC, Edward bought 80 more acres of land "on Hawkins Branch" in Wilkes Co, NC. We found no records of him selling any of this land. In a letter written in 1810 to his brother-in-law, General LENOIR {who had married a BALLARD also) , he mentioned that he had "heard no more about the land on Hawkins Branch" .Edward was an early Justice of the Peace in Newberry Co. In 1796 when Bishop Asbury was visiting him, the subject of a school was introduc- ed, and he donated twenty acres of ground on which the Mount Bethel Academy was built shortly thereafter. It was one of the earliest schools of high grade in SC and perhaps the South. A two story building, school was held downstairs and the teachers lived upstairs. It was discontinued in 1821, and the only really good write-up I found on it is in the South Carolina Library in Columbia. When we vislted King's Creek in 1970, it was difficult to locate the site of the building. The whole area is inside a State Recreational Park. I read that it was on a higher knoll than the cemetery and not far from it. We found the cemetery. Trees had fallen on the markers, breaking some of them. Unfortunately I did not write down directions, but if one exits from 1-20 at the Newberry Inn and inquires, almost anyone can give directions. We were directed to it by a little old lady in her nineties, who had gone to the last burial there in 1917. I hope to include a full list of the graves under "cemeteries" . This section, in the late 1700's, was called King's Creek, and my three times great Grandfather moved there between his marriage in 1780 and 1790 census, but unlike Edward, did not stay in SC. Later Edward moved to Newberry Courthouse where he lived in a large colonial house. When the house burned, the Hotel Wiseman was built on the site. The birthdates are from the family Bible which was in the possession of John Wayles EPPES in the 1950's.

Notes for WILLIAM FINCH:
William Finch was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, enlisting July 1, 1777, serving as a private in Capt. James Martin’s Virginia Company, taking part in the siege of Yorktown in 1881 under the command of Major Waller. Before coming to Georgia he married Jean East in September of 1785 in Henry County, Virginia. Jean and William had three children: Frances (Frankie), who married Thomas Brown; John East, who married Eliza Green on January 24, 1811; and Nancy, who married Daniel Zuber. About 1796 or 1797 William began to live with Mary (Polly) Dunn. The reason for this arrangement is unknown, but it is possible that Jean East Finch went insane or left William, either way Polly and William would have to wait until her death to marry, or possibly Polly had a living husband, then they would have had to wait until his death to marry in 1818, but found they had to wait. As Jean and William’s children remained with their father, it is unknown what happened to Jean East Finch. From census records we know that Polly did not have any children other than William’s in her household.
William Finch and Polly Dunn had ten children born in Georgia; Elizabeth, born in 1798, who married Etheldred Drake on February 3, 1820; Mahala, born in 1800, who married Thomas Anderson Brown, and died in 1890; Sarah Ann, who married ? Brown: Burdett(Birdet); Charles: James, who died young; Jesse; Nathaniel, who died young; Sanford, who marred Elizabeth Drake on August 23, 1827 and died ca. 1844; and William, who married Mary L. Barker on January 11, 1837. All of these children went by the name Dunn, until December 2, 1820, when William had their names legally changed to Finch (National Genealogical Society Quarterly, “Names Changed Legally in Georgia, 1800-1856,” p. 185-186, 1954). William and Polly had been married on September 5, 1820.
William Finch is listed in the 1800 Census of Oglethorpe County with five people in his household and two slaves. Joyce Finch is listed living next door with five members of her family and six slaves. Susannah is probably included in her mother’s household, she had two children, Robert and Susannah Finch.
William Finch had two draws in the 1807 Land Lottery. He, also, drew once for the orphans of Thomas Willingham, deceased. Thomas Willingham was his brother-in-law, Judith’s late husband. The children were listed as follows: Thomas Willingham, who married his 1st cousin Judith Willingham on January 12, 1805; William; Betsey; Salley; Joyce; Charles; and James. Nancy Willingham had one draw in 1807, meaning she was over twenty-one and unmarried. Nancy married John M. Stewart on December 20, 1809. Judith had been listed in the 1800 Census with eleven family members. Judith, was dead by 1807, according to the lottery record.
William Finch's will was written 20 Sept. 1828 and recorded 6 Jun 1854 some 12 years after his death, based on the grave marker.

Obituary of Thomas Finch (1796-1871)
The Home Journal, Winchester, TN November 30, 1871
GATHERED TO HIS FATHERS.–On the 17th of this month Thomas Finch, Esq., of this place, breathed his last. The long residence of the deceased among this people, and the prominence of his name, render a brief biography quite appropriate.
He was born Nov. 12, 1796, in Mechlenburg Co., VA. His father and mother emigrated in 1798 to Bourbon county, Kentucky, and here our subject was reared to manhood, and was one of fifteen children. At the age of 21 he came to Tennessee, and married Miss Edna Scruggs, of Bedford county. It was the Fall of 1818 when he settled about one mile and a half from Winchester, and has been a resident in our midst ever since. Most of his life was spent in farming, but he has filled several offices of honor and trust.
About the year 1828 he was elected to the office of Coroner. From the year 1830 to July 1839 he served as Sheriff, which office he then resigned, and was elected in August following as one of two Representatives to which Franklin county was entitled in the
Legislature, Thomas Howard, Esq., being the colleague of our subject.
After serving his time in the Legislature, Thomas Finch retired to private life, but in 1846 he was elected Justice of the Peace for the
first civil district of this county, in which office he served, with the exception of six years, until his death.
Thomas Finch was married three times. His first wife died in 1832. In ‘33 he married Miss Francis [sic] B. Hudspeth. In 1846 she died and he married Miss Ann E. Moffett, and she died in 1867. In that year he joined the Baptist church in this place and continued a consistent member up to the departure of his soul into the shadowy realms of eternity.
Thomas Finch was the father of eight children, five of whom are living. Six were born to him by his first wife, the other two were the
offspring of his second wife. Of the five living, two are male, one of whom is Capt. Thos. H. Finch, our Clerk & Master. The other, named Matt, went to Texas in 1849, and lives there still. He was one of the first to volunteer in the war against Mexico, and fought bravely at Buena Vista.
Capt. Thos. Finch, our Clerk & Master, went to Mexico among those who answered the last call for volunteres [sic], and in the late war
between the North and South, he lost his right arm at the battle of Missionary Ridge, if we mistake not.
And Thomas Finch, Esq., is "gathered to his fathers."

The following is from The Goodspeed History of Franklin Co., TN:
"A committee, consisting of W. W. Brazelton, L. W. Gonee, John T. Slatter and Thomas Finch was then appointed by the county court to erect a new jail. Accordingly at the July term, 1855, of the county court, this committee reported that they had sold the old jail for $300, and that the new one had been constructed on Main Street and was then completed and occupied by the jailor and his prisoners. The new jail was built under contract by John Steele, of Lincoln County. "

1840 census shows Frances replacing Edna, and the two older children are gone. Of interest is the 30-40 year old man found living in the household at this time.
1850 census shows Thomas with his 4 youngest children (Thomas Jr., Susan, Nancy, and Francis), as well as with his third wife Ann and her children, Gabriel & Frances.
