I am searching for any information concerning the death and burial in Tarrant County of James W. SHARP. Per the TN Confederate pension record of his wife Amelia Ann, SHARP died in Ft. Worth on 12/18/02. SHARP and wife were residents of TN and were staying with family at the time of his death. All indications are that he was buried in Ft. Worth.

By now you may have already obtained the information you were looking for, and if so, I would appreciate it if you would share what you've learned with me. However, if your haven't yet found the answer, I think I might have found it out.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~txtarran/military/robert-e-lee7.htm gives a roster of members in the Robert E. Lee Chapter of the Confederate Veterans and lists a James A. Sharp "b. Franklin Co Tenn; enl 1861 Winchester, Tenn Co C 1st Tenn Inf Regt; captured at Petersburg Va 1965 and POW until May 1865; d. Dec. 7, 1903l; bur Handley. 1900 Roster."
(the Handley Cemetery is located next to the Handley Power Plant on Rosedale east of Loop 820, Fort Worth.)
I know that there are several differences (James A vs W, and 12/7/1903 vs 12/18/1902) but I think this might be "our guy". Please let me know if you think.
Sincerely,
Tom Melton

Yes, I just found the same website within the past two weeks. This is the same person we were both seeking. He is James W. Sharp of Franklin County and died in 1902 while on a visit to TX. I have a copy of Amelia's pension request which was submitted in 1913 (rejected).

Notes for MATT SCRUGGS FINCH, JR.:
It appears to be true that William J. Davis served in the Civil War in Company A, 1st Battalion, 3rd Brigade, Texas State Troops. Some of us were concerned that at age 45 he would have been too old to serve.
However, the librarian found the muster roll and the entire unit is composed of people mostly in their 40's. The Texas State Troops may have been something like a reserve unit. I am identifying the W. J. Davis on the muster roll as our William J. Davis by his age, given as 45 on the roll dated 16 Mar 1864. This is very consistent with his age as given on censuses.
The additional information given on the muster roll is as follows. W. J. Davis, Private, age 45, joined 15 Jul 1863 in Nacogdoches County, enrolled by Brig. Genl. F. B. Sublett, enrolled for six months, no value assigned to horses, equipment or arms provided by himself, "continued in service six months longer by the Governor of the State".
The other names on the muster roll for that unit are as follows.
Captain S. M. Hyde, 1st Lt. Tom A. Garrett, 2nd Lt. N. B. Branch, 2nd Lt. Philip D. Sanders, 1st Sgt. W. A. Winnord, 2nd Sgt. Eliel Rowe, 3rd Sgt. S. N. Bullock, 4th Sgt. J. T. Childers, 5th Sgt. V. J. Simpson, 1st Cpl. Wm. Anderson, 2nd Cpl. W. B. Campbell, 3rd Cpl. Thos. Hubbard, 4th Cpl. Samuel Hayter.
Privates: James Briley, T. L. Blakey, John Byron, J. W. Burke, E. B. Campbell, Louis Chirino, W. H. Crawford, W. R. Cone, W. J. Davis, David Denny, W. R. Donohoo, W. H. Durrett, Matt Finch, A. L. Hudiburgh, D. Jackson, Wm. Lamb, Antonio Lafleur, G. B. Lofton, J. T. Lindsay, Robt. McMullens, W. O. McKey, W. L. Massey, A. B. Patton, Xavier W. Presler, Ansel Red, A. W. Rogers, Isaac Rogers, A. N. Self, J. R. Stark, A. Stinson, Santiago Toscano, J. T. Vondersmith, W. H. Weaver, S. Watson, Sanford T. Wilson, H. H. White, Thomas L. C. Wade.
The indexer noted that J. B. Johnson, J. R. McKnight, Jesse Wallace and James H. Wallace were originally on the roll but were crossed out because they changed to Eubank's Company.

Notes for MARY VIRGINIA SHARP:
Mary Virginia was named for the two oldest sisters of each of her parents (Mary Elam Finch, and Virginia A. Sharp).
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Mary Virginia is the "aunt in Austin, Texas" that Virginia (Sharp) Melton talked a lot about to her children. Although she didn't get a chance to be with Mary very often, Virginia always expressed a strong affection for Mary. Virginia had lost her own mother when she was 2 years old, and although I don't think she saw Mary very often, it always seemed apparent that Mary was viewed as a mother figure to her. I think Virginia visited her Aunt Mary for a rather extended period of time after her father, George Clifton Sharp remarried.

Death yr of 1803 shown in husband George's obituary is more reasonable. Virginia, Ida's daughter, always said that Ida died when her little brother was still an infant.). He married (2) CELIA LEAH MURPHEY 1915 in Tennessee?, daughter of JOHN MURPHEY and JEMIMA FRANCIS. She was born Jan 20, 1874 in Georgia, and died Sep 29, 1955 in Plainview, Hale Co., TX.
Notes for GEORGE CLIFTON SHARP:
1880 census of Hillsboro, Hill Co., TX shows a George Sharpe, Laborer/Boarder in the house of a widow Mary McCallum, and her two sons, Rbt&Thos. Hill County is a neighboring county to Navarro, which is where his mother and siblings resided in 1880, and although the surname is shown as "Sharpe", all other entries appear to correctly represent him. Additionally, next door neighbors of the McCallums were the Rufus King Finch family, and Rufus is a second cousin to George.
1900 census shows George with his wife Ida and their 3 children, Robert (Bob), William (Billy), and George (Clif) on their mortgaged farm in Mansfield, TX.
1910 census shows George on his mortgaged farm on Blue Mound Rd in Saginaw, TX with his 5 children, Robert (Bob), William (Billy), and George (Clif), Sally(Virginia), and Henry (Dick).

A Holloway family was found in the 1880 census records for Fayette Co, TX that had a 13 year old daughter by the name "I I Holloway". The age difference between Ida Irene Hollaway who would have been only 10 (or at most 11) makes it doubtful that I I is this Ida Irene, but I'm including the information found here as this is the closest that I've come to finding her family to date. The family looks like:
J. B. Holloway 37yrs a farmer, b NC, father b NC, mother b VA (John)
M. Holloway 37yrs b TX, father b GA, mother b GA (Martha)
I I Holloway 13yrs b TX, father b GA, mother b GA (Ida)
R B Holloway 11yrs male b TX, father b NC, mother b TX (Ben)
Y? M? Holloway 5yrs female b TX, father b NC, mother b TX
J S Holloway 3yrs male b TX, father b NC, mother b TX
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1870 Census of Boston, Bowie CO., TX (taken 8/12/1870) has a
J. G Holloway 35 b NC, Value (RE=$1600, PP=$1200)
Ophelia Holloway 30 b GA
Ida Holloway 2 b TX
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
One might guess that the above "I I Holloway" could be a stepdaughter of J. B. Holloway, since she alone is shown to have both mother & father born in GA.

George told his children that he had held Celia in his lap when she was just a baby. This would most likely have occured while his family was still in Tennessee.

_______________________________________________________________________
He didn't like his birth name, and in particular "Finch", and went by the name "Dick".
_______________________________________________________________________
He worked for a railroad company, and was in the hospital with tuberculosis in the1940's.
________________________________________________________________________
From his father's obituary, Dick was living in Cheyenne, Wyoming when his father died in 1930.
________________________________________________________________________
Mark Nelson, son of Lajuana Jo Sharp told me that Dick died in the late '70s in San Francisco, CA
________________________________________________________________________
A Richard H. Sharp was found in the California death records who died Sep 23, 1976 in San Francisco.
This could very possibly be Dick, but there are several inconsistancies that make it questionable.
The death record shows:
- - - - name - - - - birthdate birth state death location death date ssn
SHARP RICHARD H 08/26/1901 M TEXAS SAN FRANCISCO 09/23/1976 712-05-5863
From the above it's clear that, except for the birthdate, this person seems to match up with Dick. Even the social security number reflects that he was a railroad worker. In fact, if the birth year was 1903 instead of 1901, the birthdate would also be a perfect fit (born between May & October, 1903). The birth year of 1901 also conflicts with his sister Virginia's who was born Jul 22, 1901. So, either the birth year for Richard is in error or this person is not Dick. It does appear that Dick left home fairly early, judging from the fact that he doesn't appear in his father's household in the 1920 census. This might suggest that he possibly would have lied about his age in order to obtain a job as an adult. Of course this is conjecture. After looking at all of the data, it would appear very likely that this information is for Uncle Dick.

Railroad workers were enrolled in the same Social Security program, but from 1937 to 1963 they had numbers ranging between 700 and 728 as the first three digits. In 1964 their numbers began to reflect the same geographic location as other workers. Some railroad workers received Social Security benefits, but some did not. However, it is wise to check the SSDI in any case.
